Another beer from June 2015.

Big black pour, brown head 1/2" deep. Roasted malt smells, scorch that shit! No adjunct needed, bits of chococoffee like notes waft from the roasted barley, which is not in any short supply here.

Taste is the reliable roasted malt providing an ample chewy background. Alcohol is firm, bitterness is high but non problematic given the heft of the beer that provides solace for a well hopped stout. Its not a hefty sludge mouth feel, they keep it nice and flowing without having to resort to Chicago pours to handle it like some higher rated stouts.

Stouts like these are fun to split, especially if you're finding your tasting session bogged down with massively hopped ipas, fruited beers and pastry stouts. Nice to get an OG up in there blasting away with the basics. The chocolate malt notes are definitely of the darker variety. I guess they say baker's chocolate isn't sweet, so that would be applicable here too. These were like $6 bombers. You could do worse.

2016 "Limited Edition" bottle.

Surprisingly enough, I found myself enjoying this non-barrel aged base beer over the barrel aged Stupid Stout. While the base beer is slightly thin, it has a very good chocolate taste with mild caramel presence. There's a bit of coffee there as well. As far as adjuncts go, it's excellent. Again, it's slightly thin, but it's a pretty beer with a light head and tastes quite good with minimal aftertaste.

I like it.

The pour is so dark and beautiful.
Smelt like molasses and malt, bitter sweet.
The taste you get a tinge of coffee, dark chocolate, and ended on the sweeter end with molasses and kind of a cherry taste.
This is a heavy beer. Not a strong stout, but I felt full after drinking this.

Flight glass on tap from CBC.

L: Motor oil black.

S: Rich coffee and chocolate.

T: Follows the nose closely but with a slight alcohol bite. Quite good.

F: Medium body, very slightly dry.

O: Not a bad Stout, but not anything special. Good beer though.

Pours a dark brown with a decent size beige foam head with decent staying power.

Aromas of molasses, bakers chocolate, dark fruits, and flat cola.

Tastes is on the lighter, fruity side. Some good bitter stout characteristics followed by a fruity swallow and light bitterness on the aftertaste.

Overall this is a decent stout. Good aromas abound but the taste is somewhat more sweet than I expect for an imperial stout.

Poured from a bomber into a Pilsner glass.
A: Inky brown/black with a tan head--I did an aggressive pour and got a 1.5" head; lacing is OK but not really long-lasting or magnificent
S: Aroma is about a 3.9, not what I would usually rate a 4.0, but I rounded up--moderately deep chocolate, and coffee and then some alcohol comes through, well-balanced, rich, very enjoyable
T: Bitter chocolate, coffee, malt, well-balance, delicious, very satisfying. My favorite stouts I rate at 4.25 to 4.5, so this one is not in the same league, but it is really delicious. Malty/bitter/alcohol finish.
F: Medium thick, almost chewy, full bodied, wonderful
O: An outstanding stout that costs half as much as my real favorites. I'm glad I tried it!

Pours black in color, looks full-bodied and has a nice tan/brown colored head that sits on top. It looks like what I'd want my stouts to look like. Aroma is potent of roasted malts (of course), with notes of coffee, iron, and potting soil. Big roasted flavors come though again in it's taste along with coffee, alcohol, char, and black licorice. A great tasting stout, and one that also seems to hold up well with age.

Full-bodied, nice carbonation, all around a pretty darned good stout.

$ 8.47 (With tax)/22 oz bottle ($ 0.385/oz)
2014 vintage at 42 degrees into a hand washed and dried JK snifter
Aroma of roasted malt and some coffee, weakens but lasts
Head – small (Maximum 2.8 cm, aggressive pour), medium brown, creamy with rocks, diminishing to an irregular lacy five to ten mm ring and thin partial layer
Lacing good – wide partial rings of tiny to medium bubbles
Body dark brown/black, opaque
Flavor – roasted malt, a hint of dark chocolate and a hint of coffee; no hops, no alcohol, no diacetyl
Palate – medium to full, almost creamy, soft carbonation

Not a bad imperial stout and a decent price point. I’ve had better and I’ve had worse – would buy again.

The Stupid Stout was a good offering from Coronado. It poured an opaque black with tan head that did not lace. The scent and taste was smokey with hints of bacon and peat. The beer was evenly balanced and is a nice sipping stout. The mouthfeel was fuller in body with smooth carbonation. Overall its solid.

Black body, dark sandy head that is dense with some craters. Thick. I don't care for the goofy font on the label, however. Smell and flavor are sweet but not overly so, with milk chocolate and toasty caramel malt shining through, faint milkshake cream in the background and just a hint of bitterness from both charred malt and hops. The body is thick and viscous, as promised.
A simple but well executed stout. It lacks the range and complexity of really great stouts, but it matches them for balance and depth, and even exceeds them in drinkability. This is the third in a row of gems from Coronado.

Vintage 2014 (Date: 1/5/16) poured into a snifter it has a black body and a khaki head of 2 and a half inches. Smell of a ton of chocolate and coffee, vanilla, alcohol, roasted malt, and just a tiny bit of earth. Taste is chocolate, slight coffee, some roasted malt, good amount of vanilla, caramel, a little too much dirt/earth, alcohol, and a slight metallic. Mouth feel is full, crisp but slightly over carbonated, and a full body as well. A decent stout for the right price but not fantastic.

On draft and poured into a tulip glass.

Black color with a small mocha colored head that leaves waves of lacing around the rim of the glass. Very inviting.

Smells of chocolate, roasted malt and light coffee.

Taste is similar to the nose with some soft smokey notes. Finishes with bitter chocalate and coffee.

Mouthfeel is soft and slick. Ample carbonation moves things along nicely.

This is quite good. Nice simple flavor profile. Sweet at the front of the mouth with a bitter smokey finish. I would have again. A well built, enjoyable offering. Recommended and glad I got to try on draft.

Thick black colored beer with a dark brown colored head.

Smells of chocolate Kahlua and coffee. Scents of caramel and smoke.

Starts out mildly sweet and full of chocolate. Slight amount of acid from a ton of patent malt used to get this as dark as it is. Coffee comes out more as it warms. Not a lot of subtle flavors just a straight forward stout.

Mouthfeel is thick.

Overall a good straightforward stout with no faults.

The body is black with a finger of dark tan head. The head has slight retention and leaves a small amount of tight and slightly soapy lacing. The aroma is rich with cocoa, roasted malts, and earthy hops. The body is similar but not quite as robust. Still good but just not quite as rich. The body is A little thin for an imperial stout, lacking in the fullness and missing the slick feel.

2014 version, so this had a bit of age on it when I opened it up.

Poured a deep dark brown color with a huge tan head. The nose was mildly roasty. The flavor brings more roast than the nose might indicate. The roasted bitterness is particularly pronounced on the finish.

Pours a pitch black with copious tan head. Smells of roasted malts, cocoa, leather. Tastes sweet, smoky malts forward, molasses, unsweetened cocoa, a bit of an acidic, piney twang mid note and balancing bitter kick leaving a very clean palate . Not syrupy despite its sweetness, medium bodied, smooth almost milky profile.
Overall very well balanced, smooth imperial stout – thoroughly enjoyable.

Poured a black body with large khaki head and left lace patches around glass. Aroma is dark, almost bitter chocolate with roasted malts. The body is strong, emphasis on the roasted malts that give a off a little bit of coffeeish flavor, but are mostly just dry and strong. Some notes of dark chocolate add some sweetness and the beer is actually a smooth passer after it warms up and this is an alright stout to kick back with (ABV is hidden, I'll have to say).

Pours a pitch black thick heavy beer with no light getting through, dark chocolate colored frothy thick almost 1 finger head that fades at a med pace, nice lacing, nice legs too.

Nose brings lots of dark malts, but fluffy, some fluffy nougat, a little roast acrid like note, a very dry roasty charred malts with roasted cereal, like a chocolate cereal cocoa crispies roasted, some wafer cookie biscuit with dry cocoa, touch of booze, a little creamy vanilla chocolate ice cream blend.

Taste brings a smoked malt flavor out front, roasty malts as well, little campfile smoke with some roasty charred malts, again that burnt cereal grains, etc. A little chocolate, more like dry cocoa powder, with some creamy chocolate as well, chewy fluffy nougat, some acrid roast in the background, with super dark malts and a little bitter roast. Bitterness comes in quite a bit also from some chewy slight spicy earthy hops. Finish is sticky sweet, very sticky, little booze warmth, lingering dark roasty char and dry cocoa that somehow sticks everywhere, lingering bitterness and roast.

Mouth is fuller bod, thick, little creamy, touch of booze warmth, decent fluffy carb.

Overall decent, nice malts, fluffy creamy feel, decent roast and dark malts without being too acrid, nice dry cocoa and bitter hops, but the overall feel is lacking some extra oompf, and the sticky feel is a bit much as well. Still a decent enjoyable imperial stout.

A: This poured an opaque black with thick tan head.
S: It smelled like cocoa powder and roasted coffee, with some cream and a bit of licorice.
T: It tasted like bitter coffee and licorice, with some sweet and dry cocoa powder. It had a clean bitter aftertaste.
M: It was thick with moderate carbonation. Nice big body.
D: This was a nice imperial stout, with basic but good scent and taste. The body was fitting, and the finish was fairly smooth, so it was pretty easy to drink. Would probably age well. Fresh is enjoyable but forgettable.

Brief write-up. A standard issue imperial stout, it makes up for that by showing off the notes I like (roast, chocolate, coffee) in a controlled fashion. I enjoy the gently hoppy finish as well. A complaint: it's too thin. The slender body clashes with the slickness left on the palate, but it remains pretty drinkable. Just a nice under-the-radar imperial stout, plain and simple.

3.7/5: It certainly isn't stupid!

Pours an oily dark black with a khaki colored head. Smell is roasted malt and a hint of vanilla. The flavor has big time roasted malt, burnt toast and coffee. A rich and delicious stout that hides the alcohol well. Full bodied and damn smooth, soft but ample carbonation. A treat of a brew here.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 10/28/2014. Pours pitch black color with a 2 finger dense dark tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of huge dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toffee, toast, dark bread, licorice, raisin, light smoke/char, and roasted earthiness. Outstanding aromas with awesome complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt and light-moderate dark fruit notes; with great strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toffee, toast, dark bread, licorice, raisin, light smoke/char, and roasted earthiness. Good amount of roast/charred bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toffee, toast, dark bread, licorice, raisin, light smoke/char, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt and light-moderate dark fruit flavors; with a nice roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy, and lightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic Russian imperial stout. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roasted malt and light-moderate dark fruit flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the abv. A highly enjoyable offering.

T - Dark roasted chocolate malt, alcohol, coffee beans, some charcoal-like dryness on the very end, lingering dark chocolate bitter bite.

M - Medium to heavy medium body, slight warming on the way down, and a very dry finish with lingering dark chocolate bitterness.

O - A solid stout that's worth a try.
