Deep dark brown with foamy, big bubbled head and decent retention. Dirty, old coffee ground aroma. Thin, watery coffee flavor. Pleasant coffee linger and finish. Thin, light carbonation and biting acidity.

Unfortunately, this beer is meant to showcase a coffee but didn't give it enough of a backbone to support the flavor. It has a terrible aroma of day old coffee grounds. There is a good coffee flavor but without anything to go along with it it tastes like an alcoholic iced coffee.

Way too thin...burnt/bitter taste, not roasty/robust. Not a pleasant coffee aftertaste. Bland for the most part, very disappointing to this particular palate.

Pours a dark kola hue with a fast vanishing one finger head and sporadic lacing, the smell is strong coffee with tobacco and port, the mouthfeel is light bodied and over carbonated with tastes of chocolate, coffee, tobacco and finished with a roasted malty sweetness and overall it's average and would not buy again cheers.

Pours a solid three fingers of very dark brown foam, while frothy with many larger bubbles the retention is credible and long lasting, the lacing comes in fairly thick streaks but this tends to slide away swiftly. At first glance the liquid seems black but it is likely the darkest shade of brown possible, completely opaque, no visible bubbles, no hint of other coloration at the rims. The nose is quite roasty with a heavy emphasis on the coffee, quite milky too, black fruits and raisins, oatmeal and other sweeter baking grains, splash of mineral water, overall it’s not that sugary but likewise it does not have a noticeable hoppy charge to it either. Full-bodied, dense and reluctant to move freely, it has a strong drying effect on the mouth, to the point where it impairs the flavors. Coffee, powdered dark chocolate and a hint of molasses yet no core of sweetness, the plum, cherry fruit diminished and no citric nor floral element. The minor doughy breadiness helps. Carbonation is low but not absent. Some chicory notes at the end. Smooth but the dustiness adds to its lack of flow and slightly dilute ending. Not horrible but nothing I would purchase a second time.

Pours black with a half inch thick beige head. Smell of fresh ground coffee and roasted malt. Taste of cold coffee, roasted malt and a just a tiny bit of tart sour. It has a light to medium (more on the light side) body with a moderate mouth feel. Like others I agree this is more like a porter then a stout but it is well done (which is why I scored it low as a stout).

Smooth pour, beautiful burnt walnut color, with very little head.

Strong coffee aroma very appealing and promising, can sense caramel and spice.

Taste was disappointing, a little astringent, leaving a bitter aftertaste with very thin/watery mouthfeel. Beer didn't match it's aroma. Tried it chilled and at room temperature, did not develop much character.

L: classic stout lacing
S: roasted malt, coffee, molasses
T: roasted malt, coffee and molasses, and a light unsweetened dark chocolate finish
F: watery and light carbonation...the one weakness of this brew

Overall: Not awful after just drinking a Youngs Double chocolate stout (dreadful), but there's no big thing drawing me back to pick up more of this brew.

Got my hands on some yesterday.

I'm not impressed with this.

When I pour a stout I expect -- no, I demand -- a dense creamy head. I want a mustache from drinking it. If it can't support a pencil upright we've already started off on the wrong foot. I ended what started as a conservative pour with an aggressive dump at the end to try to generate some head. No dice. The 1 mm head quickly reverted to zero. OK -- disappointed, but we don't drink for the head, right? So we move on...

The best part of this beer was the nose, but even then it lacked complexity. I got the coffee, sure, and some sweet roasty malt but that was pretty much it. I would categorize the smell as "thin." Good... but thin. My hopes were still optimistic.

The flavor was a let-down. It was not bad at all -- drinkable and tasty and smooth -- but lacked the stout toasted malt I so crave in this type. The coffee flavor was distinct but not over-powering -- good -- but there was no "stoutiness" to this drink. I expect an earthiness that just wasn't there.

Same with the mouth-feel. In a word: watery. None of it stuck around for flavor development. Swallowed and forgotten. A little of the coffee lingered but that was it.

Overall, there is nothing wrong with Coronado Blue Ridge Coffee Stout. I would blame the name more than anything else. In fact, right under the name it says, ALE BREWED WITH COFFEE. There you have it folks: ale. That jives with my take.

Pours black with a small head.
Nose shows slightly stale burnt coffee and little else.
Flavours are pretty much the same, just stale coffee grounds. Not even much roasted malt character.
Needs a thicker body and creamier carbonation.
Not great...

Dark brown with a nice foamy dark beige head in the glass. Adequate carbonation in the mouth. Rather light weight. Some coffee aroma.

Lots of blackened taste but not much actual malt flavor. A little buttery. Overall this has kind of a "too long in the refrigerator" taste. I'm still not convinced that coffee is the best flavor for beers that are already full of charred tastes. Rather sharp and bordering on acidic. I don't find this either a very good coffee flavor or a stout flavor. But it's quite clean and crisp, and those who like a more bitter Stout may find this to their taste.

It's 5.4% in the bottled version. Bought the 22 oz bottle at Ibis Market in Mission Hills, SD.

Time to head back to the states... not literally (I wish)... although that is what will be happening in a sense to the taste buds once I crack open this bottle of Blue Bridge Coffee Stout. Now Coronado Brewing Company has a chequered past with me since I reviewed the Orange Avenue Wit... well one cheque if we're going to be honest with ourselves, which we are, and it was with hesitation that I grabbed this at The Archive cellars, maybe we should give Coronado a second chance, he's alright that lad.

Poured from a 650ml bottle into a nonic pint.

A: Presents a deep dark brown espresso body with a fluffy tan half centimetre head, which dissipates to a light lacing.

S: A distinct and delightful overpowering coffee aroma from the moment beer hit the bottom of the glass. Damn straight! A coffee beer that smells like a shot of espresso was dropped straight into my pint of stout, as bad as it sounds this is exactly what one imagines when they buy a coffee beer. Other than that there is little else detectable in the aroma - espresso coffee is one powerful aroma after all.

T: Taste is a let down. And there's that realisation: it tastes like a shot of espresso dumped into my pint of stout. As in the stout is a stout like Guinness is today (i.e. with hardly any flavour at all) and the espresso shot is any espresso shot you would get from a cafe. Combine the twain and there is little beer flavour left. Like your coffee black, and your beer not tasting like beer? Congratulations - you've found your perfect beer. Want to try another taste analogy? Buy a can of the Taiwan made "Mr. Coffee", same flavour QEDB! (the 'B' stands for 'Bitch').

M: Slight watery medium body and near flat carbonation.

D: Really this is nothing special. Buy Guinness and drop an espresso shot into it - I contend you to find any difference between a glass of this and Blue Bridge Coffee Stout. Not a beer I would buy again, I feel sorry for that Coronado lad, he is a good kid after all.

Food match: If you want to drink beer in the morning like some sort of loser then this is a good replacement for coffee. Along with the bacon/egg/toast/Sunday edition newspaper (the last one to read not eat) you might be on to a winner you morning-beer-drinker loser.

On tap @ the CBC on 3/17/10. Served in a pint glass. I don't remember the exact ABV on this but I believe that it was in the 5-6% range.

Pours a straight black in the glass (although some ruby does shine through along the bottom) with a 1/2 finger of creamy light mocha head. Thin but very frothy retention on this, which leaves a ton of sticky lacing behind. The aroma is very roasty and bitter, with some sweeter tones and hop activty in the back, but this is mostly very dark feeling in the nose.

The taste is bitter dark roast coffee, with a firm dose of hops mixed in. Chocolate and caramel sweetness hang along the back, along with a touch of earthy citrus. Overall though, this is very burnt and bitter in the mouth. It would have been nice to have, you know, a bit more actual coffee flavor present. The mouthfeel is fuller bodied, with a big prickly feel that fills the mouth up but there is also a bit more of a thicker feel underneath. Mostly though, this stays sharp in the mouth.

I like a good Coffee Stout like the next guy but this just leaned WAY too heavy to the dark side of things. Just not enough actual flavor (beyond charred roast) coming through, and this could have also used some more balancing sweetness. There were a lot of interesting looking beers on tap here during our visit and this one left me disappointed.

Clear near black colored ale with a small brown colored head.

Smell strongly of coffee and coffee. Did I mention this has a strong coffee aroma? Some patent malt and chocolate but this really smells like coffee.

Starts out with a mineral water and coffee taste. Mild coffee flavor and slightly sweet and that is about it.

Mouthfeel is OK.

Overall just a regular coffee beer.

22oz bomber shared with me by @LaitueGonflable. I believe I may have given him the bottle originally, but I can't remember where I bought it from, if so.

Pours fairly dark, solidly brown in the body, but thin at the edges. Body is fairly thin. Head forms a bubbly faint ring around the edge of the glass, in a faint beige hue. Lace forms only in specks. Looks decent, no better.

Nose is great though. Lots of brewed coffee characters, slightly sweaty, but bitter with roast notes. Pleasant and bright, perhaps a very faint hint of sulphur, but it just adds some complexity. Light but very pleasant.

Light clean entry on the palate, with a slight spice character. This mellows into more roasted notes on the mid, but it's really lacking solidity, and the coffee just feels a bit reedy by this point. Finish is a little crisper, and has a touch of roast.

Feel is a bit weak, which underlines the thinness of the mid and back palate.

Overall, it's quite drinkable for its weakness, and it's pleasant enough overall. There's certainly at least some interest there. It feels a bit like it's neither committing to being light, nor is it being really rich. One way or the other and it'd be very good.

Appearance- pours opaque black with 2 fingers of brown head slight lacing.

Aroma- Coffee plum anise earthy with a hint of toffee

Taste- smokey to begin with, gives way to a roasty bitter coffee. Has sort of a husky burnt taste with a subdued resin'y finish. Drinks like a cup of office coffee. (It may have been sitting a while, you could make a better cup at home, but you need it to get through the day)

Mouthfeel- A little thin but i like the lingering after taste the hops create ( no coffee breath here)

Overall- this coffee stout is not showing off and not falling behind. The coffee or roasted malt kind of lend a burnt taste to the beer that is a bit off putting. Someone described on here a flavor of cigarettes. I do however like the low alcohol. Coffee is very session-able, why shouldn't coffee stout be ?

Poured dark, almost black, foamy head head quickly dissipated into a slim halo.
(May be poured too cold)
Quite strong coffee with some roasted malt, maybe ahint of dark chocolate.
Thin to medium mouth feel, taste didn't live up to the initial aromas, slightly dry lingering after taste.

Small tight-bubbled head. Leaves some ring and spotty lace. The liquid is dark brown but a bit of light comes through on the bottom of the glass.

Strong, harsh coffee ground aroma. Very bitter. I'm not a fan of coffee and I think this too much.

The flavor has the coffee dialed down. It's still strong and dominant but not overwhelming. The body is on the thin side and the carbonation on the high side. Overall, a bit of a one-dimensional beer--coffee without sugar or cream.

Poured slightly chilled into snifter.

Pours a deep rich brown, so dark as to be black color with half an inch of light brown head that quickly recedes leaving light surface layer and lacing.

Aromas of bitter coffee and ashy smoke.

Very strong flavors of bitter coffee and smoke.

Light bodied for the style with light carbonation and lingering aftertaste.

Overall a decent beer but a little to light in body and a little to heavy in smoky flavor for me. Add some oats or malto dextrin and you've got yourself a better beer.

22 oz bottle. Pours dark brown with a medium creamy tan head that goes to a thin film and leaves a little lacing.

The aroma is fudgy chocolate malts with a lot of nice roast coffee.

The flavor is sweet chocolate malts some some slightly acidic roast coffee. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and fairly watery.

Overall, a decent coffee stout.

22 ounce bottle poured into a pint glass

A: Pours black, light does come through, tan colored head, no head retention,

A: Subtle aromas, chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, not a lot of coffee coming through.

T: Hit of roasted malts and subtle chocolate flavors, some coffee, very light flavors, finishes with a mix of coffee and chocolate flavors, not a whole lot of flavor.

M: Thin, average carbonation.

O: There are far better coffee stouts than this, really lacks flavor and aroma, not much in this beer.

Pours a tan colored small fizzy head, fades at a med pace with no lacing, leaves something to be desired, very dark molasses brown color.

Nose brings a lot of coffee, just like pure coffee extract almost, a bit of a roasty toasty coffee, little earthy, quite nutty with a bit of a peanut butter note, a bit of a roasty malt and hint of char, hint of an acrid black malt note, mild chewy malt as well.

Taste brings more coffee syrup, a bitter tannic coffee, with sweet syrupy flavors and a little chewy creamy oat feel, mild fluffy nougat but not much. Lots of nutty flavors again, peanut butter, bit of a roasty malt and hint acrid black malt, mild char, and just a touch of a chocolatey fudgey note. Finish is sticky and syrupy, little acrid coffee roast, bit of an earthy hop bitterness late, more fudgey notes as well.

Mouth is med bod but chewy and a bit creamy, lighter carb through all that.

Overall mixed, coffee seems almost like coffee syrup or extract but has a roasty tannic note as well like hot brewed and condensed, the fudgey chewy and creamy oat aspect is nice, but the sticky syrupy isn't, some nice flashes and some not so nice.

650ml bottle poured into tulip 17/1/13

A black liquid with a deep cola edge, thumbs width of mocha foam that falls after a few sips leaving lots of random lace behind

S faint smoke and strong coffee, smells like cold rinds with some milk chocolate, a little char and hard toffee

T more of the same really, cold dark roasted coffee with a little char, decent but simple

M quite light for the color, lots of bubbles with a bitter sweet coffee finish

O pretty straightforward coffee stout, coffee's strong as advertised and its easy to drink

with a 10$ price tag I don't think I'll be buying a second, its decent beer but I could get nearly a 6 pack of a similar quality for what I spent on a bomber

22 oz. bottle, no bottled on date. My first bomber from Coronado Brewing.

Poured into a Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale mini snifter.

A - Dark black pour; not opaque, some cola hues when held to the light. Finger of light frothy khaki tan head. Not thick, viscous, or oily, but passable for the low abv. Slightly thin / watery appearance.

S - Not a terribly powerful aroma, but good enough for what it is. Brewed black coffee, notes of vanilla / cream.

T - Not as much coffee as expected, it appears more as a dark roastiness in the finish. Subtle milk / cream / vanilla notes. Thin, with a bit of cola-esque carb.

M - Feel is smooth, creamy, & easy-drinking. On the thin / watery side, but passable for the low abv.

Overall, an average example of the style. Would be interested to see a more amped up / imperial version of the style.

Coronado Brewing Company : Blue Bridge Coffee Stout
Brewed with San Diego roasted coffee beans.

LOOK: Pours a oily, dark brown with a chocolatey looking foam topping. Leaves behind some lace on the glass.

SMELL: Black coffee, roasted malts, cocoa.

TASTE: Dark malts, lots of charcoal and coffee. Definitely an eye opener, with lots of bitter dry coffee. Hops certainly may be contributing to this bitterness with a small earthy note, but this is all about the coffee. It's a bit mild but pretty decent tasting.

OVERALL: A sessionable pick me up stout with agreeable flavor, but I found it a bit thin and watery. It's not bad, Id get it again someday.
