From old, undated notes. Poured from the bottle.

Brown/purple hue.

Tan head; nice lacing.

Cocoa malt in the nose. Nice!

Medium thin mouthfeel.

Delicious cocoa flavor. A well done porter.

12 oz bottle into a teku.

Appearance: Pours a dark ruby color. The head is two fingers high and pale yellow in shade. Good retention and a soft texture gives it a good look. Some streaks of lacing stick to the glass. (3.75)

Smell: There's a decent mix of various notes here - I get lots of chocolate and caramel in particular, with slight roasty hints. Hell, maybe even a touch of dark fruit. The hoppiness is surprisingly dominant, bringing a powerful piny note to it. There are lots of good notes, but the whole thing seems a bit muddled to me. (3.25)

Taste: The hoppiness opens it up well, bringing plenty of earth and pine. After a brief mid-taste of caramel sweetness, it transitions into a subtly roasted finish. Additional hints of coffee and chocolate also pop up on the back end. This is a solid porter

Mouthfeel: Nice and light, with the hops and roast making it quite dry. The general feel is also a bit syrupy, but it could have been far worse. Airy carbonation helps it go down easily. (3.5)

Overall: It takes a while for it to pick up, but it ends up being a really good robust porter. Having said that, it could be bigger and bolder in most aspects. Well worth considering, but it could get lost in the mix of great porters on the shelf. (3.5)

3.46/5: Delicious, just not earth-shattering
