Pours a deep brown so dark as to appear black, with thin ruby highlights at the edges when held to light & lots of particulates. The pour produces 2+ fingers of mocha, somewhat lasting, frothy head that leaves little lacing. Aroma is dark roasted malt, rich coffee and dark chocolate with hints of toffee, char, grain & faint dark fruit. Taste is sweet fronted, robust dark malts & slight burnt notes composed of roast, dark sweet chocolate/Hershey's chocolate syrup, coffee dark fruit & vanillia. The finish exhibits a burnt, unsweetened cocoa, molasses & a low cola like sweetness. I found this cola hint in other imperial oatmeal stouts Aftertaste is dry, bitter chocolate, a more exaggerated burnt note than in the finish. Mouthfeel is heavy bodied with moderate carbonation, very, very creamy with a little peppery bite beginning at midsip and lasting through the finish. The astringency in the aftertaste is low. Overall a nice brew.

It may not seem like it, but the Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody is dwindling! Each Pop! of the cap gets me a little closer to my goal. Here goes another one!

From the Bottle: "Sink the Status Quo."

I was curious to try this one since the label read "Stout with Coffee added", which seemed a tad perplexing. Hmm. Nothing as going to happen until I Pop!ped the cap & so I did just that. I think that I may have overdone it earlier so I went with a slow, gentle pour since I was not up for cleaning a mess. Once complete, I gave it an in-glass swirl to raise just under two fingers of dense, foamy, bubbly, deep-tan/light-brown head with moderate retention that left decent lacing in its wake. Color was Black/Opaque (SRM = 44), allowing ZERO light penetration. Nose was rich, more towards mocha or chocolate than straight black coffee, but I understood where they were coming from. Mouthfeel was big, full & creamy, just the way an Oatmeal Stout ought to be. I just kind of let it roll around on my tongue to get a better sense of it & also to allow it to warm. I was still unsure about coffee, per se, but I definitely got a lot of dark Baker's chocolate and a light roastiness, but I am unsure that I could have identified coffee on my own. Finish was dry with a good bit of bitterness as well as a persistent chocolatiness.

Sampling a cellar temp 12 oz bottle poured into a snifter. The beer pours a deep dark cola brown with some white sediment coming up from the bottom of the bottle and settling to the bottom of my glass. I get a tan creamy head of 3 cm that recedes slowly to a sturdy edge layer and a large wispy island in the middle of my glass.
The aroma is rich and malty with coffee grounds and dark chocolate. I also get some brown sugar notes and a bit of roasted character. No hint of the 8% abv nor any hop presence on this beer.
The first sip reveals a silky texture and slightly sticky feel with an average body. The carbonation is mild and spacious and rolls across my palate. The beer does drink pretty easy for the physical traits.
Flavor is heavy with coffee ground and roasted malt notes. I get some dark chocolate and some hints of vanilla and grainy oats, but the roast hits dominate this beer. Again no hops that I detect and the booze is well hidden throughout my sampling.
A solid stout that I am glad to have purchased, I think it would easily sneak up on you if you have more than one as the booze is undetectable IMO.

Pours a dark brown in color, with a thin head. Notes of Chocolate, black coffee and dark malts on the nose. Tasting, you get the chocolate and coffee upfront with the roasted malts on the back end. Another winner from Thomas Creek.

Pours an opaque dark brown almost black color with khaki colored head. Coffee, roasted malts, chocolate, and oats on the nose; follows onto the palate. Full bodied. Finishes with chocolate and coffee.

Pours a deep dark brown color with a half finger of head. The nose is mildly roasty. The flavor profile has a sufficient roasted malt to earn my approval. The flavor also contains an essence of both cocoa and coffee and there is a nice dry finish to this offering.

Appearance: While it makes an attempt at the bubble show, it is not as successful as it should have been; still, the beer pours fudge brown with a modest tan head that leaves quite a few paisley spots

Smell: Unsweetened chocolate, ashy roast, black coffee and a whiff of resinous hops

Taste: This beer does a nice job balancing the malt and the hops; the malts bring chocolate, some roast and a blast of black coffee; overall, the malt base is very dry with layers of flavor; at the same time the hops add a resinous character that builds through the middle and through the finish; the oats are very subtle but can be tasted in the aftertaste

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation; not as creamy as would be expected from an oatmeal stout

Overall: This is a darn nice beer from Thomas Creek; very impressed by the balance here

Pours a deep, dark chocolaty brown that borders on black with a thin but sturdy head. Bittersweet cocoa and roasted coffee aromas greet your sense of smell immediately. Full bodied and somewhat creamy with a satisfying velvety texture. Bitter, dark malt flavors mingle with espresso to create a beer for coffee fanatics. Expect a trace of chocolaty sweetness in the finish.

A: Pours an opaque yet still clear very dark, almost jet black in color with light amounts of gentle visible carbonation along the edges of the glass and faint dark cola brown highlights. The beer has a two finger tall dense foamy dark tan head that slowly reduces to a medium sized patch of very thick film surrounded by a medium thick film covering the remainder of the surface of the beer and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of dark roasted malts, charred/burnt malts, and ash over a light to moderate aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans.

T: Upfront there are moderate flavors of very dark roasted and charred/burnt malts. That is followed by light flavors of freshly roasted coffee and just a hint of oatmeal as well as a light flavor of very dark chocolate. Moderate amounts of bitterness that slowly fade away.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth, almost silky.

O: This is a very enjoyable coffee oatmeal stout, the coffee flavors are well integrated and the oatmeal makes the mouthfeel just a touch smoother. I really like the fact that it does not have some of the sweetness of other coffee beers I have enjoyed.

Very dark red-brown body with a weak tan head.

The aroma is a good mix of coffee, toffee, alcohol esters, burnt toast and dark roasted grains.

Flavor: largely follows the aroma, although the flavor has way less (minimal) smokey and burnt elements than the nose indicated. Plenty of dark roasted malt flavor and nearly as much black coffee. Mild-moderate bitterness.

Feel: nearly creamy smooth; medium-full body; light carbonation.

O: A recommended coffee stout.

12 oz bottle into a wine glass.

Appearance: Pours a very dark ruby color - for a stout (especially an 8% one) it looks a bit lightweight. The head is a finger high, and khaki in shade. Retention isn't particularly spectacular, but a small amount of lacing is left behind. (3)

Smell: It does have a nice amount of coffee to it. The sweeter, less roasty malt backbone helps give it some depth beyond just coffee: I'm getting a good bit of dark chocolate, as well. Aside from the lack of roasted goodness, the nose does a very good job of bringing both the coffee and the chocolate (not much oatmeal presence, though). (3.5)

Taste: Coffee flavors open it up...actually, I want to say a combination of coffee and piny hoppiness open it up. This is also nicely hoppy, but in a good way. Some sweet, chocolaty malt helps finish it off. Come to think of it, this is quite chocolaty - also oat-laden. The coffee/hop combination is quite solid...if it had some general roasted flavor to go along with it, this might be pretty damn divine. (3.5)

Mouthfeel: Rather light on its feet, which doesn't really mesh well with the lingering, slightly syrupy finish. On the other hand, it's respectably drinkable, at least. Certainly, there's no hint of the 8% anywhere (considering some big oatmeal stouts can excessively expose the alcohol, this is a very good thing!) (3.5)

Overall: Did I ever mention I'm a sucker for coffee stouts? It's hard for a coffee stout to be less than good, thankfully this hits the ground running. Only two nitpicks: not enough roast, and a bit too much vegetal flavor (not a dealbreaker, though). If Founders decides to never ever ever distribute to MD in a million years, I won't be too heartbroken drinking this year-round (!) instead of FBS every fall. (3.5)

A: Dark brown with a light amber tinge only when held to the light, 3 fingers of deep beige head, nice random lacing.

S: Dark toasted notes, coffee, dark chocolate, light smokiness, creamy.

T: Dark chocolate, banana, iron metallic iron, light sweetness, toasted bitterness. Coffee? Sure, there’s some black sweetened coffee in there as well.

M: Medium smooth, slightly oily body, medium low carbonation.

O: Fairly well done brew by this brewery. Not wowing me, just more than okay. Got it in Greenville, SC at Wholefoods. Drank in Pensacola, FL, July 27, 2014.

appearance: Very stout dark, nearly opaque, some cola highlights. Fairly thin tan head.
smell: Very pleasing imo though not a lot going on.Pretty mild cocoa with some sweetness. I would not have guessed coffee if it hadn't been in the name.
taste: much like the nose. I like this though it's pretty much a "light weight" not much coffee or stout richness. Nice finish with a touch of bitterness that's overcome by a bit of sweetness.
overall: Nice enough, not something I'll be seeking out.

Appearance: Very dark brown, near black body beneath a light tan head that's a bit on the thin side.

Smell: Roasty nose of darkened malts with just a hint of basic chocolate and a touch of dark fruit.

Taste: A light chary, ashen roast with a minimal backing of chocolate and estery fruitiness. Minimal hop character, bitterness. While waiting for the coffee character and some soft, succulent oats to burst forward, well, that's when you hit the drying, lightly fruity finish with a bit of alcohol. This ride is over.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Just a bit of medium carbonation.

Overall: A little thin and lackluster considering the words "oatmeal" and "coffee" being prominently featuring in its name. Hey, I want the version Zach had!

Bottles January 20, 2014.

Pours pitch black, with a one finger latte colored head. Nose is earthy coffee, a bit like FBS without the chocolate. Coffee actually seems less pronounced on the palate. A touch of oatmeal sweetness comes through that's pretty nice as well. Flavor has solid hang time on the palate as well. Not that I mind. Mouthfeel fairly creamy.

Overall, a great stout, but not pronounced enough in any category to choose it over WNB or FBS.

Pours a dark chestnut brown color that appears pitch black and completely opaque in the glass with faint mahogany edges and a two finger beige head that slowly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Very good retention taking a while to settle and leaving sporadic spotty lacing behind.

Slightly smokey roasted dark malt aroma that's slightly one dimensional and slightly acrid. Strong gourmet roast saves the nose but there is a really strong burnt/charcoal like presence with hints of charred toast, oatmeal, dark chocolate and ash. As it warms the coffee/espresso bean notes stand out along with subtle sweeter light malts. Nice coffee presence elevates the aroma a bit but it's still overly roasted and one note for my preference.

On the fuller end of medium body with slightly better balance than expected but still heavily dominated by robust, deeply roasted malt. Very dry and somewhat acrid with burnt toast/malt flavor along with bitter dark chocolate, ash, charcoal, and used coffee grinds. The coffee presence was really nice in the nose but isn't very pleasant on the palate. Tastes similar to old burnt coffee and is in desperate need of more sweetness to balance things out. There's a touch of lighter malt with sweet chocolate and caramel but it isn't enough to counter the heavy roast/burnt coffee flavors.

A-can see a crimson tint as you pour the glass. It is a dark black cola color with a brown head that faded quickly
S-roasted grains and coffee with a cram like mocha aroma with a slight chocolate in there.
T- roasted grain with a sweet milk chocolate flavor at first, that turns into a roasted hop aftertaste that goes to a warming coffee bean finish
M-very creamy, smooth, silky feel, with high carbonation.
O- as you can tell by the rating I liked this beer. It gets you great balance

A- Black, with some dark ruby highlights. 1/2" brown head sticks around well, and leaves decent lacing.

S- Coffee, caramelized sugar, a little cocoa comes out as well.

T- Subtle coffee roast, brown sugar sweetness. Mild for a bigger beer.

M- Smooth drink, especially for the alcohol content. Roasty coffee bitterness and the smallest bit of alcohol cover the finish.

O- This is very drinkable. The coffee isn't too overwhelming and the oats add a nice smoothness.

Draft at Grapevine. Cola black pour, nice heavy cream colored head.

Aroma, mild coffee, roast malt and some dark chocolate. Its a little light here.

Taste, roast malt, peat, some herbal hop notes, well integrated coffee. Finishes a mocha coffee.

About mid bodied, nice and creamy. Very easy drinking. Up there with the Octoberfest as my favorite from these guys.
