Poured from 750mL bottle into a weizen glass.

Tons of head as I expect from a wheat beer, I had to let it settle for quite some time and do several pours to fill the glass. The head is foamy, bubly, and forms a peak that reminds me of a root beer float. The body is a cloudy brown with hues of blonde.

Initially, I only smell the wheat, clove and banana I get from most hefes, but the smoked ham aroma is there when I pass the beer under my nose a few times. Lots of sweet on the nose too.

There's the smoke! It's still not as aggressive as a rauchbier or smoked porter, but it's there and very tasty. I've got the lingering taste of smoked almonds on my tongue, but the beer starts sweeter and banana-heavy. I get some caramel like flavors coming in and out, mingling with the smoke. I like the flavor here.

I'm slightly disappointed by the mouthfeel here. It seems a bit flat, or at least lacking the burst I usually get from a hefe. It's smooth though and has a very light feel, this despite the 6.6% alcohol.

I think I like this beer. I'd drink a lot of this throughout the summer, very light, but full of flavor and the smokiness I'm a sucker for.

Dec. 2014. 330 ml bottle, from CITTI-Markt Flensburg, No. 1021. BB date 21.01.2014. ABV is 6.6%. Hop is Herkules. Hazy dark reddish brown colour, moderate off-white head. Aroma of caramel malts, with surprisingly little smoke. The flavour has distinct notes of smoked malts and caramel malts. Easy drinking (well, it was cold, and I was thirsty), but not a favourite of mine.

Presentation: 22 oz. brown bottle with a "best by" date printed on the back label. Served in a Samuel Adams pint glass.

Appearance: The thick, foamy, one finger head stays around for a while and doesn't leave any lacing behind. It's a clear, very dark amber, almost brown color.

Smell: It's a sweet and smokey scent with notes of roasted malt, caramel and dried fruit.

Taste: It's rich and smokey but mostly sweet. There's honey, caramel and malt along with some cocoa and hoppy bitterness in the background. The smoke rounds things off nicely.

Mouthfeel: It's lighter bodied but still creamy with medium-low carbonation.

Overall: A classic rauchbier in both scent and taste but toned down and more accessible. Possibly because of this, it feels a bit light and it would be better with some more robustness. Still, it's a great beer.

Picked up at Weyermann, Bamberg, DE. €6.99 + 0.25€ Flaschenpf (Bottle deposit). Reviewed 10/28/18.
650 mL capped bottle marked “Mindestens haltbar bis 01.12.2018” on the back label. Stored in reefer in the maltery store and served at 42 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Appearance – 4.
Body – Deep amber, opaque.
Head – Large (Maximum 5.3 cm, aggressive center pour), tan, dense with surface rocks, good retention diminishing to a three mm ring and a complete layer. Head retraction leaves behind multiple broken pieces of lacing.
Lacing – Good. As the level lowers, thick partial rings of mostly tiny bubbles remain, connected by thin columns or flowstone-like sections.
First pour – Tan, hazy to the point of being opaque.
Aroma – 3 – Very weak smoke and some weak caramel barley (malted).
Flavor – 3.5 - Predominantly smoke but still much less than an average bacon. Slightly sweet. No flavor hints of a weizen. No alcohol (6.6% ABV), no diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide.
Palate – 3 – Medium, almost creamy, lively carbonation, i.e. a typical weizen.
Impression and interpretation – 3 – An average rauchbier. While the flavor of smoke is low, it is still more than adequate to bury any subtle flavors from the wheat malts.

german rauchweizen, but not too heavy on the smoke. my bottle dates back to 2014, but its drinking quite well still, aside from the little layer of sediment that has likely formed in the bottom of this and flaked out into the glass when i poured it. it fizzes up to a quarter inch of khaki head, but it settles back quickly into the reddish brown medium bodied liquid. the aroma is nice here, candied malts, long boiled, lots of earthy wheat, and of course the smoke, which is subtle and autumnal here, nice that there is some sweet to balance it in the taste, and there are both aromas and flavors of all sorts of fall treats from pie crust to candied red apple to dates and figs. its got a nice weight to it, better carbonation than it holds in the glass, and a neat bitter element from the smoke. its well layered, just a touch oxidized at this point, and with things like graham cracker, grill scraper, and multigrain toast coming to mind. overall a tasty beer, probably a little more compelling when it was brand new, but i thought this was quite well done. enjoyable as an after dinner drink on a rainy evening.

Solid two finger head of brown foam, fairly even surface in spite of mix of bubble sizes, reduces evenly and slowly, the lacing is thin and long with normal staying power. The liquid is brown with an orange rust tint, quite cloudy with a fine sediment throughout, the visible bubbles are fat and move incredibly swiftly up to the surface. The nose starts off with caramel, butterscotch and German chocolate cake notes, metallic and dried meat accents usher in the peaty smokiness which remains more subdued than aggressive, maybe some date or fig lurking in the background along with dough and banana. In the mouth it is medium-bodied and the carbonation delivers on the visuals, all hyperactive thrashing and snap, crackle, pop. The wheat manages to enunciate a bit more here but still subordinate to the caramel, honey roasted nuts, toffee and clove. With repeated sips the smokiness accrues in your mouth pores, however, can’t call it a major factor. Not as much fruit presence and the esters seem more knit into the whole. There is a puckering sensation at the end and the finish is truncated. Satisfactory, not exemplary.
