This is Beer 4 from the Rieder Advent Calendar. First of all, love the Big Lebowski label :) That may have been the end of what I liked about this beer though. This beer pours a murky brown with a thick layer of off-white head. The aroma is muted hops, with a soapy undertone. The first flavour is a sort of sickly sweetness, but it quickly transitions to quite a bitter finish. A very simple beer in terms of layers, there's no complexity at all. The hops are very mild, but the bitter finish lasts quite a while. The hop flavour is strange, what I would call dishwater hops: wet, soggy and not much flavour. Maybe not offensive, but just lacking pop. I would say there is a solid foundation to build on here, but as a previous post remarks, it needs improvement.

330ml stubbie bottle, 7.51% ABV, and number 4 in the 2012 Craft Beer Advent calendar. Oddly enough, I just had this last night (see previous review) in canned format. I was under the impression that all of the calendar's offerings were exclusive in the Alberta market. Guess not.

This beer pours a hazy, dark copper-amber hue, with many instances of upwardly mobile effervescence, and five fingers of dense, chunky marshmallow off-white head, which leaves some broad streaks of fuzzy lace around the glass after it very, very slowly disappears. Molto lento!

It smells of bitter citrus rind, musty pine cones, soft biscuity, bready malt, and further leafy, somewhat perfumed hops. The taste is subtly bitter, muddled citrus - predominately overripe oranges - more musty, leafy, dank hops, and a confused blend of caramel and bready malt. The 7 and a half points of alcohol are still pretty well integrated.

The carbonation is pretty sedate, the body medium-light in weight, and more or less smooth, nothing really messing with that. It finishes off-dry, the innocuous malt trudging along, with the hops playing a rather reserved game of hard to get.

A plain IPA, nothing more - all the over-carbonation issues don't seem to be container-specific, so that just adds to the frustration around this offering, and the suspicion that more went into the theme and presentation than did the actual brewing process.

Appearance. Pours a lightly hazy, deep amber-gold with 3+ fingers of foamy off-white head.

Smell. Roasted oats and grainy malts, lemon and orange rinds, floral hops and a little bit of brett-like funkyness that's a little bit off putting.

Taste. Sweet grainy malts and light caramel, floral hops and citrus fruits. Better than the smell for sure.

Mouthfeel. Medium+ body with medium+, soft carbonation.

Overall. To be honest, I bought the beer because of the funny can. The smell wasn't great but it was a decent tasting beer and more than just a gimmicky can.

From my beer advent calender (I know I'm early, but I am on an adjusted advent) 1 - 330mL bottle. In alberta you can purchase the 355mL cans.

Awesome label and name, but surprising that it is not a white russian, but rather a "almost double IPA".

A- It looks like a root beer float. The head is unreal and since it says oat soda on the front likely caused by the high protein content of the oats. The beer it's self is a cloudy root beer colour.

S- Faint hoppy aroma with slight maltiness

T - you can taste the higher alcohol content in this moderately hoppy and bitter beer. It's a green hop flavour. There is something at the very front end of the beer I can't quite place too.

M- Rich, but not too heavy. very Drinkable.

O - Have I had better IPAs? For sure, but this one is pretty tasty and worth buying again to bring to a friend's house for novelty value. I wouldn't mind watching the Big Lebowski with one of these in my hand.

L: amber red, off white head with good retention.
S: bread, toffee, honey
T: there is a lot going here: pine, honey, hint of grapefruit, toasted marshmallow. Aftertaste of fruit and roasted malt.

This beer pours a nice ruby colour with a thick two inch head that sticks around and clings to your glass. Strong citrus and hop notes on the nose with a bit of maltiness in the background. That same malt comes through as the beer warms up and the bitterness of the hop comes through in the mouth. That same bitterness sticks around in the back of your mouth. I also have to say I love the packaging on some of the Bad Attitude beers and this Big Lebowski label is definitely eye catching. If you like IPAs I think you'd enjoy this beer from Switzerland.

Just picked up the advent calendar, so I have some catching up to do.

I would have guessed this was a Belgian IPA... is that a Brett infection? I assume it's not intentional... which makes this difficult to review. It's not bad... it's just not right.

A: Not a gusher, but it really foamed up when it was opened. Mahogany with a slightly tanned head, good retention, great lace.

S: The aroma is a bit like a very fresh Orval: Lots of leather and some floral hopping. Some underlying tropical fruit (Mango, papaya, candied pineapple), sponge toffee, blackberries.

T: Leathery, mango, marmalade, sponge toffee, Swedish berries, good bitterness, alcohol is subtle.

M: Slight residual sweetness, plenty of hop acidity, drying finish.

O: Not an American IPA, but some interesting flavour.

330ml poured into tulip 25/9/12

A quite dark for an IPA with a murky brownish ruby body, massive loose tan head leaves a partial ring of lace followed by a few chunks, decent retention ending up as an island with a peak

S more burnt brown sugar then hops, has some iced herbal tea notes and a little citrus and if you search for it some faint pine but I'd never think it was a DIPA

T again it has more sweet burnt sugar then hops, I even get some faint coco of all things, lots of herbal tea bag and lacking hops or faded at best

M foamy as it enters the mouth, a little sticky, there's room for improvement

O there's no booze detected anywhere with this one but without much hop character it dose little to sway me, maybe as a brown ale but even then not so much

pretty weak IPA, nice name and label, its not offensive but its boring and needs some work. I'm not sure what month GIU on the BB date is but I'd guess this is older then it should be for just entering the market.

Recently stumbled across my notes from The Festival 2012. Lets do this!

A - Poured an oddly enough rather dark colour, almost red, with a tan head that faded to leave a thin blanket. Looks more like an amber than an IPA.

S - Ugh, lots more brown sugar/malts and caramel than hops here. I looked, and looked, and looked some more but could find hardly a whiff of hops.

T - Taste is slightly better. Light herbal hop notes, some faint bitter finish. For the most part though this was a malt bomb.

M - Mouthfeel was average, bit sticky. Just okay.

O - Overall, disappointed by this beer. Wanted to check it out because of the name, very unfortunate.

Fourth beer in my Beer Advent Calendar. Pretty sick short neck bottle with some cool artwork. Hippy looking guy with some glasses. Pretty cool name that gets your attention.

A - Deep copper color. Fiancé poured and created a boat load of head. From what I read it really foams so probably not her fault. Very stable head that looked like a root beer float.

S - Fairly light IPA aroma that is weaker than I expected from a double IPA. At least that's what I deciphered from the label

T - Pretty weak taste. Not a lot of hops. Sort of around a proper IPA in strength of hops. Thought it was going to be more considering I think it's a double.

M - Flat and light.

O - Perfectly average beer. Something I could get bombed off of but not something I would be excited to show friends.

330ml Can from Drinks of the World, Basel (5.30 CHF):
This one was a beer I was looking forward to but instantly became unsure of as I poured the can & it looked a lot darker than I'd pictured in my head given I was expecting a standard American IPA. Thankfully the beer was one that grew on me, especially by the time I got to the taste with the darker malts & roasted flavours perfectly balanced against some pine & citrus hops with a little sweetness & sugar thrown in for good measure. It was definitely an unusual take on the style but it went down a treat & was easily on of the better beers I tried on my trip to Switzerland; great stuff & one well worth looking out for.

330ml can served in a pint glass.

A: First of of all, a beautiful can art. A tribute toThe Big Lebowski, which I'm a big fan. Great movie: great can art! The beer has a dark amber color when poured. A little bit fuzzy. It forms a big bubbled tan head. A bit soapy and with good retention. Some lacings are formed and left in the glass

S: Very malty with strong notes of flowery hops (according to the brewery, Chinook, Centennial and Simcoe). Some light notes of caramel and brown sugar. Notes of grapefruit

T: Sweet malts upfront. Caramel malts, brow sugar. In overall, a dry and bitter taste. Notes of grapefruit and pine

M: Heavy body. Good carbonation. Malty and bitter aftertaste

O: Good drinkability. I would dare calling it a double IPA but it doesn't taste like a classic IIPA. In any case, "a nice brew, Dude"
