This brown ale pours a dark brown, milk chocolate color with a thin, sudsy, white head. The smell is of caramel malts and maybe a little chocolate. The flavors are caramel, toasted biscuits, and maybe a little coffee and dark chocolate as well. The body is medium. With all of these sweet malts, the beer is bound to be a little sweet, but it’s actually pretty well balanced by a noticeable bitterness in the finish. This is a really nice brown ale. It definitely plays to what I like in brown ales in that it is a little bit rich and a little heavier bodied than the average brown ale. Good solid beer from a good solid brewery.

This is a very enjoyable brown ale.

Dark chestnut brown, medium pale tan head slowly shrinks to foamy ring and wisps, some lace.

Aroma is nice rich chocolate toffee caramel and rich whole wheat bread.

Taste is balanced, firm sweetness but not too sweet, similar in bitterness. It has caramelly whole wheat toast.

I wasn't impressed by Figueroa's hoppy options, but this is a lovely brown. The malt character spans the distance between roasted barley, with a hint of smoky cocoa, to toffee and dark bread, with a caramel finish. Though one quibble: the aroma doesn't stack up to the flavor's complexity. It's not that heavy, medium weight, and an excellent example of how to make a malt-forward beer.
