On tap at the brewery on Jan. 31, 2014.

This beer's appearance is basic, but beautiful. A pitchblack liquid, opaque and coffee-like as the name suggests. Head is two-fingers thick and forms a semi-dome above the liquid. It's caramel in color and persistent. After it dissipates, it settles into a lacy layer above the liquid and around the rim of the glass.

The nose is again, simple and straightforward: coffee, lactose, coffee with cream (hence the name). It's slightly sweet, but not much.

From the first sip, coffee bursts onto my palate, followed by some sweet cream, vanilla and toffee sweetness like you get from one of those cream products and hints of milk chocolate. There's really a lot going on.

As for the drinkability, this beer starts off sweet and creamy, then becomes stiff and coffee-like, then becomes dry and chocolatey, and the coffee and chocolate linger long after. It's damn easy to drink despite the nearly %8 ABV.

Overall, a spectacular beer and one I'll be sad to see go.

22 oz bottle, dated 1/13/17. Pours dark brown with a medium creamy tan head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is sweet lactose and chocolate malt with a lot of roast coffee.

The flavor is sweet lactose and chocolate malt with a big roast coffee finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, a nice coffee stout. I think I'd prefer it without lactose.

Acquired in a trade off of BA. Drank out of a Transient Artisan Ales tulip glass.

Look: Poured with a half finger light khaki head, dark chocolate color, light ring lacing, medium amount of down-up bubbles.

Smell: Mocha with whipping cream, lactose sugar, fruit forward espresso.

Taste: Cold brew coffee with vanilla creamer, light roast, milk chocolate chips.

Feel: Medium bodied, slick feel, medium tongue coating, low apparent carbonation.

Solid appearance. Brown at the edges, spots of light foam linger. Aroma bit light ... but I seem to find this common in even the tastiest milk stout. Just not highly aromatic as a style. Flavor pops - a sweet, condensed milk, coffee concoction. dessert. The complexity is lacking. Really those two dimensions driving: a sweet carmelized milk flavor, and moka pot coffee threaded through. Full body, particularly for the abv.

Appearance: liquid black velvet – luxurious. A light tan head forms to a 1/8-finger that fades very quickly.

Aroma: milk-chocolate, vanilla, coffee and dust. There is a slight mustiness in the nose, but not oxidized.

Flavor: lactose sweetness hits first followed immediately by the coffee. Strong vanilla notes. There is no description or ingredients listed on the label referencing vanilla, but it’s there. This beer leans toward the too-sweet side. After the first few initial sips, the sweetness seems to intensify.

Mouthfeel: light-heavy, much heavier than expected. A 22oz bomber is going to be a meal. The body is along the lines of an imperial stout.

Overall: This is a beer that, where as I take my tasting notes, my impression is trending downward. The technical aspects were well executed, but the flavor is lacking. This beer is only so-so. It will not be a repeat purchase, and I don’t feel the quality of this beer justifies the $8.99 / 22oz price tag.
