Style: Rye Beer

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
A malted magic hop bomb. Rich caramel and toasted malts team up with flaked rye and march to the beat of a big but balancing bitterness only to be overtaken by an onslaught of American hop aroma and flavor. You want a tame and subservient, spineless beer that takes orders well and doesn’t challenge anything or anyone? This ain’t it!

Good goodness this is a damn fine beer. I've often described Ambers and Reds to the uninitiated as smack-dab in the middle of hop-forward and malt-forward styles, but never before has a beer performed such a delicate - and for my sake, validating - balancing act. Aromas and smells interweave with one another so seamlessly that its hard to tell where the malt characteristics end and the hops begin. There is a molasses kind of sweetness that almost borders on boozy despite a mid-range ABV, and earthy, juniper-like hop bitterness that plays so well with the spiciness of the rye. Wrapping it up now before the nerdom gets questionable and to get back to this helluva beverage.

Pours a dark, Amber with a medium head that leaves a good amount of lacing. Tastes is a good balance of saltiness and the spiciness of the rye intermixed with moderate hops. Thoroughly enjoyed this beer.

Fruity, Spicy, Malty, Toasty

This is a gorgeous, deep ruby-colored beer with a thick foamy head. Fruity, hoppy and spicy rye grain in the nose. Very smooth and a bit viscous, with a semi-sweet malty base that brings toasty, nutty, apple-y and caramel flavors to the palate. Rye malts cut through the other flavors with spice and mild tannins joining the fun. Bready in the finish and a Red Ryeot indeed, La Cumbre has created a tasty mash-up of a Red Ale and Rye Ale.

As reviewed in BeerAdvocate magazine #112 (May 2016).

16 oz can. Pours clear ruby amber with a medium creamy off white head that slowly goes to a thin film and laces the glass.

The aroma is sweet rye malts with some fruit and some piney hops.

The flavor is sweet roasted rye grains and nutty caramel with some fruit and a big piney resiny bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation.

Overall, a nice red rye IPA. A little on the sweet side for me.

Part of the series of bottled beers that La Cumbre is now putting out fairly frequently, I had this beer on tap.

The beer came in a Nonic pint glass with a thick, cream-colored, chewy head. The beer was amber brown and transparent. It looked beautiful in the glass.

As I smelled the beer, I found myself searching for the rye character, but I wasn't getting much of it. Mostly, I got a lot of hoppiness, particularly of the resinous, piney nature. I did detect a slight spiciness that may have been the rye, but I also thought the hops might be providing that note.

Drinking the beer was much more of a pleasure, it's just a damn good beer. Lots of fruity, citrusy hops are present and lead to a sweet and creamy finish. There's some sweet malt adding good body and the creamy mouthfeel and only subtle hints of rye adding earthiness and spice. The beer is mildly bitter at the finish as well, but it sort of dances with the sweet creaminess to add an intriguing combination.

As I've said, I enjoyed this beer, but I didn't get as much rye character as I'd like. The beer seemed more like an IPA than a red, but hell I' ain't complaining.

Pours a ruby red with thick white head and sticky lacing. Nose is just loaded with sweetness, malt, roasted nuts, caramel, and hops. Flavor follows nose, just a rich malty roasted goodness with a bitter hoppy finish, this is a wonderful beer, light to medium feel and oh so fun to drink, outstanding.

I had very high hopes for this, as I came to love La Cumbre's Elevated IPA; I'm a sucker for rye beers too. This one smelled delicious but was a tad underwhelming taste-wise. Dry and moderately bitter..Nevertheless still a solid beer. Hopefully I will be able to try all of La Cumbre's beer during the rest of my stay in New Mexico...

Such a smooth, easy drinking and subtly flavorful ale--a real surprise in an IPA and just delicious. Had one on draft at MineShaft Tavern in Madrid, NM the day after Christmas and with one of their fine green chile cheese burgers it went down so well, I had to have another and enjoyed the second just as well. Spice, pepper and hops enough to just taste great. This really is my favorite La Cumbre brew now, and that is saying a lot because La Cumbre is my favorite brewery and I am lucky enough to live nearby! Cheers!

A thanks to the commander of the canquest, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a 16 oz. can. Has a mahogany color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of citrus, light rye. Taste is hoppy, citrus, some malts and rye, moderate bitterness. Feels medium/full bodied in the mouth and overall is an enjoyable beer.
