Served on tap at the brewery on March 10, 2014. Also debuted in 22 ounce bombers.

Arriving in a snifter, the beer was immediately eye-pleasing. A finger and a half thick, espresso-colored head, foamy and looking like the top of a latte sat magnificently above the liquid. Below was a pitch black liquid suggestive of black gold aka oil. The head persisted exceptionally well and left rings of lace as I drank.

I struggled to make out any prominent aromas initially, only getting a sweet smell. As the beer warmed, dark, roasted malts made their way to my nose. It didn't really do justice to the tastes I was about to enjoy.

There's much more going on for the tongue's delight, especially a toasty, singed bread flavor up front, followed by coffee, sweet, creamy caramel and dark chocolate. It's a wealth of flavors that all work well with each other, but also stand out on their own. The beer, being freshly tapped that same day and also having a high ABV, did have a slight heat. It didn't stop me from quaffing away and enjoying the thick maltiness, the dry, roasty finish, and a surprisingly bitter aspect (I did a double take with the IBUs, which hit a whopping 80).

I wholly intend to revisit this many times in the next few weeks, as well as buy a couple of bottles to age. The beer is already good and I suspect with age will become a delicious monster of a beer. Another job well done for La Cumbre.

This is a beautiful beer, toasty malt pure flavor, does not mess around with gimmicky flavors, amazing beer!! Wish I could get it in NY.

Bottled 3-18-14
Pours near black with a caramel head. Moderate lacing. Aroma of charred malts and dark fruits. Reminds me a lot of Stone IRS in that respect with the intense prunes, figs, and black cherries. Some licorice creeps in. Tastes similar to nose with some increased bitterness from the intense roasted notes. Some earthy wood character. Alcohol is quite present leading to some medicinal qualities that aren't all that enticing. Thick and rich. Love the IPAs from this brewery, but this one didn't do as much for me. Flavor starts out real nice, then takes a step back with the finish.

"La Negra."

BOTTLE: 1 pint 6 fl oz format. Brown glass. Purple label with uninteresting label art. Pry-off crown cap. Bottled 11/04/16.

"Barrel-aged imperial stout." 10.5% ABV.

Served chilled into a Guinness goblet and allowed to come to temperature over the course of consumption.

HEAD: ~1-2cm in height. Tan colour. Somewhat creamy, somewhat soft, fairly frothy. Robust, with a nice complexion. Light lacing sticks to the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Head retention is average - ~2 minutes.

BODY: Predictably for the style, the body colour is an opaque ink-black. No yeast/lees are visible within.

Appears well-carbonated. Not unique or special.

AROMA: Vanillin from the bourbon barrel. Buried oak. No toasted coconut or barrel sugars.

Dark malts, chocolate malts, cream, Hershey's syrup, subdued hazelnut syrup, walnut, faint char.

No overt hop aromatics or yeast aromatics. Not boozy. No off-notes.

A bit reticent, but generally appealing. Aromatic intensity is average.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Matches the aroma, more or less. More in terms of the vanillin (artificial vanilla from the barrel), less in terms of any evocative/expressive or deep flavours. There's reticent dark and chocolate malt in the backbone, bland oak as an undertone, and hints of Hershey's syrup throughout, but it's muted as all hell and couldn't be more shallow.

Flavour duration is above average. Flavour intensity is low for the style.

Unbalanced, not imbalanced. Each shallow flavour sits alongside each other. Not a gestalt or harmonious build; the parts do not sum to excess of the whole.

Texture is gooey, syrupy, and thick, but all that isn't justified by the (lack of) depth of flavour. Smooth, wet, unrefreshing. Viscous. Not soft or approachable. Overcarbonated.

OVERALL: A swing and a miss at a barrel aged imperial stout from La Cumbre. Not a beer I'd get again or recommend to friends, and not particularly drinkable or enjoyable. Throwaway fare in an oversaturated style...why brew and release this when there're so many superior expressions of the style out there available at far better prices? It's above average, sure, but will that cut it for discerning consumers in a style as heavily brewed as the barrel aged imperial stout?

Bottle pour at the pre-FWIBF bottle share held at the Adelaide Inn in Paso Robles, CA.

Thanks to Rado for sharing this one.

Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Tiny dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, dark fruit, and licorice aromas. Taste is much the same with licorice, wood, and herb flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with an interesting mix of licorice and herb qualities all around.
