Notes: To call Nelson Sauvin an aggressive hop would be a vast understatement. What would happen if you made a DIPA that featured this hop??? Over 10 lbs./bbl of hops went into this gem of a DIPA. A ridiculous level of hop aroma, followed by a hop flavor that is literally juicy in texture. The bitterness is undefinable, just unreal. If our Elevated IPA is on the hoppy side of the aisle for you, stay away. If you drink that beer and think to yourself in Homer Simpson’s voice, “That’s kinda hoppy… I guess…” prepare to meet your match. This beer is gonna put the beat down. Will you tap out before you finish the pint?

Poured into Alchemist stemless wine.

Appearance is pale orange with small head in the off white color range. Slightly hazy but no Heady territory. 4.25

Aroma is huge juicy citrus, caramel malts, faint pine, wintergreen, and gooseberry. Similar to project dank but less piney and with a hint of that Nelson white grapiness. 4.5

Taste is Elevated meets Project Dank with a minty/leafy character and some lingonberry, gooseberry, and burnt orange touch. This isn't so much about strictly Nelson hops, but damn is it tasty! Unique and very balanced between the hops and malts. I detect some crystal and other darker/caramelized malts. 4.5

Body is medium with soft carbonation which makes the mouthfeel feel sturdier. Bitterness is at a nice level and helps cut through the malt backbone. 4.5

Overall another great IPA by La Cumbre. This may be my favorite over Elevated and Project Dank. Love the minty/herbal character joining with the juicy citrus and subdued but present gooseberry character of the Nelson hop.

16 oz. Can
Canned On: 07/31/19

Less than a month on this can.

Poured into a Tree House glass a pretty nice clean/clear dark golden yellowish color, pretty nice carbonation, with a pretty nice thick/creamy one-finger plus off-white head, which also leaves some pretty nice sticky lacing behind. The nose is hoppy, malty, with a pretty nice citrus complex (orange, tangerine, grapefruit, mango), pretty nice piney. The taste is pretty nice, hoppy, malty, with a pretty nice citrus complex (orange, tangerine, grapefruit, mango), pretty nice pinyness. Medium body, ABV hidden pretty well, with a pretty nice dry/bitter finish. Overall, a pretty tasty brew. Now in cans. Pretty good price.

Growler from GHB. Thanks!

Appearance: Amber body with a little chill haze. Clearer as it warms up. Pours with two fingers of head that recedes to a cap.

Smell: Nothing but nelson on the nose. This beer highlights the more funky aspects of the hop, with big notes of grapefruit, onion and white grape, with a little cat piss. There isn't much of the tropical fruit softness I get from some nelson beers. It's unmistakably nelson nonetheless, and it smells excellent. There isn't much malt to the aroma despite the hefty ABV.

Palate: Surprisingly dry for the high ABV, with no trace of alcohol. Also quite bitter. There's a ton of hop flavor balancing the bitterness, which learns toward grapefruit-like citrus, white grape, pine and onion. Malt flavor is negligible beneath the huge hop flavor and bitterness. The body is light, and there isn't much sweetness to speak of.

Overall: Nelson is one of my favorite hops, and this showcases it in a great way. It's very different than Alpine's two 100% nelson beers, which are two of my favorites - this beer is more brash, dry and intense, but still nuanced and very drinkable. Excellent stuff.

Attractive orangey golden brew with an enthusiastic foam in the Troubadour tulip. Vast aroma of oranges, hot mango, cat pee, and fermenting pineapple. Sharp and acidic with hop oils, which seems to go along with the sweet malt bomb flavor.

This is actually kind of an insane overdose of an otherwise delicious hop. It seems more coarse and brutal than it ought to be. I agree with BucannonXC5 that a modest bittering hop followed by later hopping with the Nelson would be the way to go. Big flavor, though, and a tasty brew to sip.

From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Susan's Fine Wine & Spirits in Santa Fe.
