Today is my New CANorado Beer Sunday as the result of my trip to CANorado to visit The Old Lady aka Ma Petite Abeille. I shipped a boatload of CANs back from Mecca and I aim to review every daggone one of them. Slainte! My thanks to the peeps at Argonaut Liquor Mart for going into the back room to check for inventory when the shelf was empty.

From the CAN: "Kolsch-Style Ale A light-bodied, easy drinking beer style from the German town of Cologne. The hops are very low and of noble variety with a light malt to keep the beer refreshing and good for a hot day. A cousin of the pilsner, this is a hybrid style traditionally made by the people of Cologne to enjoy in the middle of the summer, but decidedly delightful year-round."

I was a little CANcerned during the Crack when it began foaming through the mouth of the opening. I let it sit briefly but when the foaming did not abate, I initiated a very gentle Glug. This, in turn, caused a massive amount of head to form and I had to await its settling down. I ended up with a finger of French Vanilla-colored head with moderate retention that initially resembled the top of a soft serve ice cream cone until it fell. Color was a cloudy orangish-yellow. Nose had a lightly grassy quality along with a honey-like lager sweetness. Mouthfeel was medium but it had an odd taste to it, more bitter than I expected or like in the style. Finish was semi-dry with an odd, unexpected tartness. I CANnot recommend this one. Sorry.

Poured from pint can into schooner glass.

Appearance: a 1" white head slowly recedes with no lacing. Color is a hazy golden with plenty of streaming carbonation.

Aroma: apple and pear, yeast rolls and some floral hop presence.

Mouthfeel: light and crisp with a dry finish.

Flavor: tart apple and pear, light toasted barley malt. An abrupt hop bite in the finish.

Overall: not a bad beer, but nothing outstanding either. There seems to be a lack of balance in the flavors.

Another beer courtesy of the legendary woodychandler. Poured from a 16 oz. can. Well, not really poured. This beer came gushing out of the can, has a light golden color with several inches of head. Smell is a bit lemony, some malts. Taste is sweet up front, some light malts, then a bit of tartness, unusual for the style, Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is not bad, but nothing special.

Pours a hazy dark yellow with a huge soapy white head. Aroma is kinda astringent with a rubbery smell to it at first, but then it grows into sweet fruitiness and crackers. Flavor has some of that rubber too along with some crisp fruitness with a little cracker and a kiss of grassy hops. A active, creamy mouthfeel. Overall, the rubbery component to this is off setting but the rest of the beer is still quite good and would make for a great summer, baseball watching beer. I only bought a single of this so no more cans to compare it to, but will have to try again to see if this rubber was a flaw solely within this can or if its consistent. Hopefully, just the bottle because I liked what I was trying otherwise. Minus the rubber, this rating would have been around the 4 mark I bet.

Growler from the brewery.

Served cool into an imperial pint glass, Old Town Ale is a pale staw yellow color with just a hint of haze. The head is thick and bright white. It settles slowly leaving a little bit of lace behind.

Aroma is clean, fresh, and very mild. Maybe a little bit of lemon and wheat but otherwise very subtle.

The same could be said for the taste, in fact. It's a very mild, crisp, refreshing beer. Again a little bit of lemony hops and faint spice notes.

Mouthfeel is light in body and nicely carbonated. Balanced and very drinkable.

When you consider that the lightest styles are the hardest to perfect, this beer is quite an accomplishment. It won't wow you with hops or some funky yeast. However, it is light American ale at its finest.
