Style: American Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.80%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Maple-Kissed Wheat Porter is a medium-bodied porter that tastes amazingly smooth and velvety. The rich and creamy mouthfeel is a result of the wheat used in the brewing process. Local maple syrup gives this beer just a hint of palate-pleasing sweetness as well as a nice depth of flavor.

We call this beer “maple-kissed” because we use just the right balance of maple syrup to impart a delicious flavor without the beer becoming sweet.

Pours a three finger khaki head that fades slowly leaving some lace. Black color, no highlights. Good carbonation and medium-heavy bodied. Maple and coffee nose, flavor is roasted coffee and some maple. Burnt coffee finish. Okay but not worth $9.95 for a 22oz bottle from Bert’s Better Beers Hooksett, NH.

a - a deep, dark brown pour - on the verge of being black... head grows as it sitts, quite interesting...fluffy, dirty, brown in color...2-3 fingers initial

s - light..some roasted malt, bit of coffee.. hint of sweetness, maybe a tad of vanilla?

t - light as well. was expecting more maple, so was a bit let down... never had a wheat porter [i don't think], so wasn't sure what to expect...

m - velvet like light to medium in body, similar to the smoked porter

o - eh... not sure... not quite what I was hoping for...

Pour from a fresh growler into a tulip glass. Dark brown bordering on black body. Creamy light mocha head. Solid lacing. Smell is coffee, milk chocolate, and some light maple syrup. Taste follows the nose. Light roasted bitterness. Mouth feel is light to medium with decent carbonation. A solid maple porter. Easy drinking and tasty.

Dark brown, nearly black. No light shines through. Small head, particularly for a "wheat" beer. Oddly, little lace that lasts.

The aroma is dark and chocolatey (semisweet). Fairly straight forward porter smells--mostly the aforementioned chocolate and a touch of coffee (not quite mocha).

Relatively thin body and taste. Lots of carbonation. In the swallow, I get some sourness and no wheat. There's a burnt bread finish with a solid bitter hop spice. I don't get any of the maple syrup flavor (it's dry but still no distinctive maple characteristics). Short aftertaste of nearly burnt toast and straight up bitter hop.

I do love throwback brewery but I found myself really searching for flavors based on the name.

There is a really nice scent and after a couple sips I slightly tasted the maple but it wasn't as profound as I expected.

However, it is still a decent stout!

This was a beautiful beer: very dark brown color with a huge, sticky tan head that retained well. There was a tiny bit of lace.

Pleasant aroma of sweet chocolate. Some roasted malt/coffee. The maple syrup was present, but not in a big way.

Taste disappointed; did not at all live up to the aroma. Mostly chocolate and coffee, couldn't really get the maple syrup.

A little on the metallic side for mouthfeel.

Not sure I would want to try this beer again.

22 oz bottle poured into a Sierra Nevada imperial pint.
5.8% ABV, 29 IBUs

Thanks Rochefort10NH!

A - Deep, dark brown in color, this porter is near black. A vigorous pour creates a frothy khaki head above the beer which settles rather rapidly leaving trace patterns of lace on the glass.

S - I'm cautious to use the word sour here, but there's almost a touch of sourdough bread and sour mash to the nose. It strikes me as odd, but the beer otherwise has a delicious light smokiness and touch of maple syrup gently surrounding the moderately roasted malts.

T - Maple seems entirely fermented out leaving no trace flavors behind, at least none that contend with a lightly smoky and bitter chocolate roasted malt flavor. Astringent singed wheat bread and earthy herbal hops trail off on the back end.

M - Medium-light bodied, this beer feels more like a dark wheat ale here, somewhat soft on the tongue with an effervescence that ushers in a roasted bitterness and dry profile on the finish.

O - Throwback's Maple-Kissed Wheat Porter encourages delicate smoked wood notes to develop around a roasted malt body but the somewhat thin feel suggests a wheat beer with dark malts and a splash of maple syrup that's been fermented out. The beer in the bottle doesn't sell me on the name, but I'm not about to pour it out either.
