From the 650 ml. bottle. 2014 batch. Sampled on July 28, 2014.

The pour is dark mahogany amber but there is a ridiculously huge, fluffy tan head. I don't know what made this bottle so carbonated but it was a four finger head and took a long time to dissipate.

But once I set that aside I pick up a pleasantly balance nose of dark malts, smoke, dark fruit, nuttiness, and slight bitterness.

Medium body.

The taste is about the same as the nose with a firm sweet nutty and grainy malt character and a pleasant smoke bite. Smooth finish. Balanced and likable.

Initially, the beer foams out of the bottle, but with a little back pressure, it is kept at bay. It pours all foam, literally no liquid in the glass. Very slow to recede. It leaves a solid dome. It's really too much of a good thing. This goes on throughout the tasting. The liquid, what little there is, is solidly brown where light can pass...very cloudy.

Chalky and creamy. Darker, deeply roasted malts--some chocolate and a bit of soured cherry. Very light smoke.

Chocolate milk comes to mind on the initial sip, although not as sweet. The smoke comes through in the swallow subtly. Definitive yeast on the tongue. Decent body with an elevated carbonation. I note some hop in the finish. Moderate aftertaste, time wise.

Bottle from Bert's
Pours a solid dark brown with a decent sized very creamy tan head that sticks on to for a good long time. The aroma is heavy on the caramel and chocolate with hints of dark fruit. There is a bit of smoke in the nose, but it is very subtle. The flavor is light in the bacon heavy in the fruity flavor with lots of caramel brown sugar and chocolate. Medium body with a creamy silky mouthfeel and a moderate level of carbonation. Oddly for a double smoked double brown ale this one is not very smokey. That being said, I often find that smoked beer tends to be over the top with phenols whereas this beer uses the smoke to add a bit of character to a really nice brown ale.

Poured into a 16 oz snifter, bottled on 3/25/14. Pours a deep mahogany, with a two inch soft tan head.

Smell is smokey peat, caramel, fig, vanilla, and molasses.

Taste is dominated by smoke, some fig and caramel lend a hand, but barely a cameo appearance. The smoke lingers in the mouth long after each sip, some vanilla in the finish.

Body is medium large, plenty of life, a touch dry, and man it goes down easy enough, but it really assaults the palate with bitter smoke.

Overall I am at a loss. I don't love it or hate it. It is an acquired taste of a beer. If you are into smoked beers you will like this.
