A very impressive beer. Poured jet black into a snifter glass with a small foamy head at the top. The aroma was rich and chocolaty (cocoa is used in the beer) with subtle overtones of bourbon. Flavor is complex and satisfying, an excellent combination of roasted malt, caramelized malt, coconut, bourbon, cocoa and a bit of counterbalancing hops. The alcohol flavor is present but well-hidden. Mouthfeel is outstanding, creamy but not nearly as heavy as one would expect--the coconut element adds body without too much weight. This is surprisingly drinkable and definitely food-friendly. One of my companions who doesn't generally drink beer even enjoyed a taste of it.

On tap at the Brew Kettle, served in a 12oz snifter.

10% ABV, 25 IBU.

The beer looks remarkable in the snifter. The beer is black with just a touch of mahogany around the edges. A nice one finger cappuchino head rests atop a black body. The original beer was lacking in head, but this is perfect! Great lace as well, especially for a 10%. Wow, what a great start!

The smell is strong bourbon with a hint of coconut powder and some roasted malt, producing some toffee and molasses notes. Some chocolate as well as vanilla from the wood. Not too tannic from the oak. Very expressive aroma, much more so than the original - the coconut powder is actually noticeable in the bouquet of this beer. It's just a touch hot and I'd like a smidge more chocolate, but it's really enjoyable!

The bourbon jumps out in the taste, almost knocking me down (in a good way). The first sip was worth the drive today. Some great roasted malt and some hops, then sweet toffee and caramelized malts. Oh-my-god! So lovely with the barrel's additions of vanillin and a touch of woody tannins combining with the coconut powder. The lingering sweetness is almost like a coconut vanilla ice cream. I don't think this sat for too long in the barrel - just perfect timing, because, even though it's very bourbon-centric, it's got enough balance and integration.

The mouthfeel is a bit thin (the booze seems to have made it just a touch hot and less cohesive) but as it warms the beer gets really creamy. The carbonation sparkles for a second then lets the beer get creamy. The drinkability isn't higher than "good" just because it's a sweet, strong beer. More than 2 in a night wouldn't happen for me. But it's enjoyable as hell. Big props to Jack and the staff for letting me taste this! You all rock, this is the best BA Baltic porter of all time!!
