Emmer is a type of wheat which was among the earliest cultivated grains in human history (actually pre-history, to be accurate), dating to Neolithic times. Before its cultivation, hunter gatherers harvested it wherever it grew wildly, with the earliest evidence of its consumption dating to approximately 19,000 years ago near the Sea of Galilee. It, along with barley and einkorn, was a staple crop in the Fertile Crescent, and it was also used by the ancient Egyptians to make beer. Here and now in the 21st century, Riedenburger’s Emmer Bier gives us a chance to connect a bit to our early history, as it’s made with emmer along with lesser quantities of einkorn, spelt, barley and wheat. Like all of Riedenburger’s beers, Emmer Bier is bottled unfiltered (naturtrüb), so expect a very hazy deep brownish amber on the pour, and don’t be surprised if there’s some yeast sediment in the bottle.

On the nose, look for some rich bready notes, caramelized malts, a touch of spicy hops, hints of baking spices, and a wisp of dried fruit. In the flavor department, very tasty bready notes are reminiscent of both the doughy center and a toasty crust. Hops add a mildly bitter and spicy counterpoint, and there is a certain nutty or woody undertone too, along with a hint of grape skin. The lack of filtration contributes to this brew’s robust body. It’s not heavily carbonated, and thus comes across a bit like a kellerbier crossed with a specialty grain dunkelweizen.

Darker caramel color with a thick off-white head with medium retention.
Light aroma of grains, nuts, and something between grass and pine.
Flavor with notes of grains, yeast, lots of nuts, some unexpected plum fruitiness, just a bit of green apples, biscuit and wood (tannins). Dry aftertaste with a medium bitterness.
Light sensation bordering medium creamy body with appropriate carbonation.
Flavorful, very well balance and with a unique character. Interesting Kellerbier with a broad range of flavors: fruity, nutty, malty and yeasty. It seems like an Ale with lager yeast taste. I gave extra points for the creativity.

Pours an unfiltered nut brown color with a smaller, yet stable head.

Smell is of scented wood, molasses and spicy licorice, wrapped into melted caramel.

Has a light body, with a very pronounced, metallic carbonation, making this appear almost like sparkling water, as far as the refreshment in this goes.

Tastes of toasty caramel malt, roasted grain, hazelnut and honey. Takes a sweeter turn then, with more honey and an extra layer of toffee cutting through. Finishes light and refreshing, with a rustic, well working malt foundation, which produces a light earthiness.

Quite nice, with a special, malty twist.

Poured from fridge temp. Pours a nice dark brown with slight transparency. Good carbonation, but not too much. Nose is brown sugar, toasted malts, and dark fruit. Taste follows the nose. Really smooth. Sweet, but not too sweet. Nice dark cherry, blackberry, caramel, brown sugar. Really enjoyable.

A: The beer is hazy dark reddish brown in color. It poured with a short off white head that died down, leaving a thin layer of bubbles on the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of clumpy yeast and toffee are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell and also has notes of dark fruits in the flavors.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is quite tasty, but is surprisingly lighter in body compared to what I would have expected. As such, it is very easy to drink.

murky brown with lots of yeast/sediment, beautiful off-white fine bubbled creamy head, lacing
aroma is wheat-citric, bread and caramel, peanuts
rustic, some caramel malts, spicy bitterness
thick but still refreshing, smooth, liquid bread
Interesting use of uncommon ancient grains that provide a rustic flavor and a full mouthfeel together with the unfiltered yeast. A sip of the past, if you will. Satisfying
