Glass: AleSmith Barrel-Aged Reserve snifter glass
From: Tioga-Sequoia Brewing Company in Fresno, Calif.
Price: $14.78
Purchased: Oct. 13, 2016
Consumed: Oct. 22, 2016
Reviewed as: American Barleywine
Misc.: Bottled in March 2015 (educated guess); Red wax on bottle neck

Was originally all in on American Barleywines, then did not like the style for a bit, then came back around again. Really looking forward to this one as a BBA barleywine. Picked up on of these and a double barreled version on a recent trip to Fresno and Tioga-Sequoia, but still kicking myself for not picking up their regular barleywine. The first sentence from the back of the glass really sold me: Our 2014 American Style Barley Wine was aged in our cellar for a full year in whiskey barrels from Colorado’s Breckinridge Distillery and Wild Turkey bourbon barrels from Kentucky.

Poured a reddish brown amber hazy color with 1-to-2 fingers of khaki tan frothy head. A few bubble streams could be seen coming from the bottom of the glass. Good spotty lacing. Excellent-to-world-class retention. (Sight - 4.25)

Smelled smooth bourbon, oak, old leather, vanilla, some cherrywood, plum, caramel, boozy, but not overwhelming, some green vegetables, hints of toffee candy, butter pecan, woody pine and a touch of smokiness. (Smell - 3.75)

Wow, lots of smoke on that first sip. Only got a smidgen on the nose, but getting it big time with the first sip along with char wood and smoky fire. Also cherrywood, bourbon, oaky wood, toast, smoked meat (thinking brisket because I just had it, but maybe some dry pulled pork), leather, tobacco, toasted toffee, roasted nuts, butter pecan, woody pine and slight hints of vanilla. Does not taste anywhere near 15.1 pct. ABV. (Taste - 4.00)

Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Long, warming, smoky finish. (Feel - 4.25)

Giving this a 4.00 overall, but not entirely happy about it. Might have overrated this overall. Will be interested in seeing the double barreled version. (Overall - 4.00)

With tremendous respect to the region's firefighters, the aptly named Smoke Chaser is a deep and woodsy barleywine with rich smoke overtones. But this time Tioga-Sequoia toasts those heros with a kiss of bourbon for added appreciation.

Dark garnet and crimson hues cast an ominous haze with an eggshell white froth to crown the rim. The overtone of smoke is obvious right at the pour, but its earthen perfume also billows with deep caramels and toffee, a toasted nutty scent, citrus, pine and that undeniable tinge of oaky bourbon. To taste, the sweetness of malt splashes the early palate with maple, molasses, butter pecan and a savory french toast whole grain character.

The flavors simply gel on the middle palate as the sweetness seeps deeply into the tastebuds and its savory toasted bread and nut medley bridges into the taste of sweet mesquite, soft smoke and an overall brisket-like character. Still, a balance of seared citrus offers up a grapefruit, pineapple and orange zest flavor that morphs into the sharp bitterness of toasted pinecone, sap and shaved woods.

Its bourbon, oak and cherrywood character offers final touches on the palate while the ale finishes full-bodied but with a sense of hop-derived dryness, alcohol spice and a light tannic and smoke texture. Seemingly much more drinkable than the alcohol content insinuates, the ale trails long in aftertaste with smoked citrus, oak and pine.
