1/10/17 bottle, so less than 3wks old. West coast IPA all the way, lots and lots of pine. Sweet malt dominates the early flavors. After about 1/2 bottle, the hop bitters build and linger on the back.

Received this as an extra in a recent trade . . . Some would insist that there is no such thing as a "bad extra" but I disagree. DO NOT SEND OLD IPA'S IN A TRADE regardless if it's an extra or not. I digress . . . This a decent looking beer but the maltyness has taken over the nose and flavors of this beer. Who knows, maybe a fresh bottle will come my way some day and I can give this a better review.

extra from a recent trade, no idea of age, but judging by taste and comparing to other reviews, I think this may not be as fresh as one would hope. transparent orange, nice froth and lace...nose is bright sweet candied hops...no citrus and pine like everyone else experienced...almost sweet barleywine like. must be on the older side as it is rich. taste is definitely syrupy and rich, but sweet with big malt. not a fresh modern ipa...take the blind age with a grain of salt, but perhaps a reason to add some form of dating? not what I would reach for when looking for an IPA...malty, likely aged...

12 ounce bottle poured into a pint glass

Pours a golden orange color with a bright white head, lots of lacing all over the glass, beer is clear with a good amount of carbonation. Aroma is earthy, piney, and resin with a good balance of malty sweetness like caramel. No alcohol on the nose. Flavor hit of earthy piney hop flavors up front, moderate amount of bitterness in the middle, finish has lots of sweet malts, aftertaste is more pine flavors. Mouthfeel is smooth, creamy, and medium bodied with a piney dry finish.

Even though it's usually not a beer's strength, this has a pretty good mouthfeel, however, it's also malty on the nose and taste, maybe it's an old bottle as there is no date, finishes sweet and malty, kick up the hops and this would definitely be more enjoyable.

Type: 12-oz. bottle
Glass: Clear 9-oz. plastic cup
From: Liquor King in Fresno, Calif.
Price: $7.99 for a 6-pack
Purchased: March 31, 2016
Consumed: March 31, 2016
Misc.: No BOD on bottle or 6-pack

Picked up on a trip to Fresno, Calif. Cautiously optimistic about Gen Sherman IPA. Reviewed at the Springhill Suites in Fresno.

Poured a golden, honey, clear color with 3-to-4 fingers of fluffy, white head. Lots of bubbles coming up from the bottom of the cup. Lots of foamy, layered lacing on the sides of the glass. Excellent, thick retention on the top all the way down. (Sight - 4.25)

Smelled a mix of hops and malts, getting sugary caramel, Casccade hops, floral hops, earthy pine, some grassy, herbal hops and hints of orange blossom. Not a typical IPA. (Smell - 3.75)

Taste was even maltier than the nose. Specifically got Cascade hops, caramel, soap, pine, earthy, bitter citrus rind, grassy herbal hops, floral hops, leafy vegetables, faint buttery malts and pretty boozy overall. (Taste - 3.00)

Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Boozy, bitter finish. (Feel - 3.25)

Did not like this one that much. Bummed that I have five more to drink. (Overall - 3.25)

Super dark for an ipa, almost brown. Lots of head, but the color is a little freaky. Aroma was pine.

Taste was a real viscous pine, bitter, woody experience. Alcohol is there in every sip, this is a strong 7.5% on the taste buds throughout the mouthfeel. Its a hunky roasted malt bitter c hop of a beer.

Bottling code of 244151. Not entirely sure, but I'd guess this works out to Sept. 1, 2015.

Appearance - Pours relatively clear and golden orange in color. Off-white, finger width head that displays fair retention before breaking down to a thin, consistent layer of suds across the surface. Thin sheets of lace with a few spots here and there.

Smell - Moderate citrus and floral hop character backed by a healthy amount of caramel and a tinge of bread.

Taste - Follows the nose. Not the most punchy IPA you'll come across, but displays a nice balance and a good flavor profile. Moderate citrus and a touch of floral and pine quality with a deep caramel malt backbone. Finishes much the same, with light, lingering bitterness.

Mouthfeel - Medium in body with average carbonation. Slightly silky texture that provides a nice, easy drinking experience.

Overall - This one hits on my radar. I love citrus/caramel combo IPAs. While not the most aggressive or flavorful one I've come across, it does present a great balance between hop and malt. Considering the price I'd probably buy again, but it's nothing I would seek out specifically. Hard to grade, because while I love the flavor, it lacks that ideal punch you'd expect from the style.

This beer is way under rated. This is amazing little known gem. I buy the 22s by the case every so often. They go fast. Buy this!
