Urban Chestnut Brewing Company - Midtown Brewery & Biergarten
Missouri, United States

Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
We pronounce it “sta-leep-ah”; you pronounce it how you like. STLIPA, which is the acronym for St. Louis India Pale Ale, is actually a DIPA (Double or Imperial IPA, double the stats of a traditional IPA). We hope it’s a “sleepe” that you’ll include in your set of favorite DIPA’s from one of the best beer cities in the world St. Louis. Hops- Sterling, Cascade, Mt. Hood, Willamette, Chinook.

Big bottle, 16 oz or so. No indication of how old this is.

A: Amber body, no haze to it. Nice head and decent retention.

S: Malt, caramel, sugar. No hop profile. Not a good start.

T: Malt bomb. No hop bitterness at all. Very unbalanced.

M: Good carbonation. Mouthfeel is fine.

O: I'm always cautious of buying undated bottles, but this is local and from a popular beer store. But I got burned. Tired of wasting my money on this crap. Date your bottles!

Verry malty almost hides the hops absolutely no bitterness

500ml bottle.

L: Slightly hazy orange with white head. Good lacing.

S: Grapefruit/spice resembling Chinook and Willamette. Some subtle noble aroma.

T: Firm bitterness upfront, followed by citrus/spice/noble flavor with lasting American hop taste. Enough malt to back up the hops but no malty/bready flavor.

F: Medium mouth feel with plenty of hop body. Gives me the hop burps.

O: Lower alcohol Imperial IPA (certainly not double the stats of an IPA), with a balanced blend of American and noble hops; I'd call it a solid IPA. Good to see a brewery that focuses on old styles bringing in a more modern recipe.

Not sure if I got this old, off a dirty tap line, or what. Bad malt flavor masked everything, and I barely got any pine or tropical fruit flavor. A lot of that bad musty copper flavor going on. Thankfully it was at a company event so I took 3 sips and had a buddy check to see if I was crazy about something being off. He claimed it was just a bad brew. I'm unconvinced they WANTED the beer to taste like that. After that, just left the glass on the bar.

Poured into a pint glass from a pint bottle

L: Light orange, slightly hazy, minimal head

S: Mild malt scent, little bit of pine and nuttiness, not much else coming through for me.

T: Alcohol up front (surprised it was only 8%) with a bready flavor and notes of floral, pine, nuts, and coconut. Bitterness hits at the end and lingers, which I liked.

F: Not as well-carbonated as I would like (and it was fresh)

O: Fairly well-balanced DIPA, less malty than most which I appreciated but mix of flavors was undesirable for me. I think dry hopping it with some Citra, Amarillo, SImcoe or something would really make this a good beer.

On draft

Clear light golden in color, bone white colored head. Mild hop aroma, a little earthy and floral. Taste is just some medium herbal bitterness and a little biscuity malt. Not that good. Thin bodied, lively carbonation
