Our on-going expedition mostly dedicated to those ever questing ‘rye, whiskey, bourbon, etc. barrel-aged beer zealots’. This particular ‘aged-one’ is a barley-wine ale that rested for a few months in a rye whiskey barrel, imparting it with some not so subtle notes of spicy rye, oak and sweet caramel. As you enjoy this complex and potent beer, please heed those words of advice – “Imbibe with care, lest you be a Daft fool!”

Appearance: Pours the color of rye whiskey with a one finger head that leaves a wispy pattern of lacing
Smell: Treacle tones dominant, with pecan nut, apple, brown sugar, vanilla, rye whiskey and earthy hop tones
Taste: Treacle dominates from start to finish, with a progression of other flavors emerging; apple and brown sugar emerge first, with pecan nut and earthy hop tones arriving in the middle; the rye barrel and vanilla come, after the swallow and linger; the overall effect is sweet, fruity and rather complex
Mouthfeel: Full bodied with moderate carbonation
Overall: I have wanted to try this beer for quite some time and have been periodically keeping my eye on the Urban Chestnut website to see when it was available; I love a good English barleywine and this one pushes all my buttons; this one is particularly well-balanced with layers of flavor
Thanks, Gregwilsonstl, for the opportunity to taste this one from the growler

this is pretty intense, and for not being insanely strong for the style, it sure feels like it is, a slow sipper to say the least, but this has excellent flavor, a lot of the rye whiskey coming through in both aroma and flavor, and there is a lot of malt character here too, sweet caramel and toffee notes, somewhat more pale and on the lighter side than a lot of these, but then also some earthy, nutty, and even bitter aspects as well. maybe its not overly layered or complex in the grain build, but i think its a great platform for the whiskey, which is hot for sure, but also full of flavor, i get maple, bruleed white sugar, charred old oak, and the rye itself, which adds a needed spice intensity to this, slightly peppery and earthy, and then a whole bunch of booziness which slows me down quite a lot. i like how much whiskey comes through here, but i do think this could be more mellow than it is on the alcohol and the sugar. it also doesnt seem to have quite enough body for all the intense flavors in here, more smoothness would be a good add to this. overall though, this is a really solid barleywine, warming as it should be, and with a distinctly rye profile to it. a little bit outside what i know the wheelhouse of urban chestnut to be, but this is nice beer this time of year.

On tap. Poured a clear, golden burgundy color with a small, off-white head of foam. It smelled of bourbon, oak, vanilla and sweet toffee. Big boozy taste with toffee, caramel and a sharp bitter bite.
