Style: Munich Dunkel Lager

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.20%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
The Dunkel style is what many refer to as the original beer of Munich and the surrounding countryside and villages (Dorf in German) of Bavaria. This everyday beer ranges in color from amber to dark brown, depending on the amount of Munich and roasted malts used. Ours is a deep reddish brown with a rich malty flavor. The sweetness of the malt is balanced by the use of another Bavarian friend…the Hallertau hop…in this specific case Hersbrucker grown near Wolnzach, Hallertau.

From the brewery's traditional 500 ml bottles, this beer is a murky brown color with a cream colored, densely-bubbled head. The aroma is bready, with a little roasted notes, caramel, and fruit. The taste is balanced with malty sweetness and enough bitterness to satisfy. Medium in body and very enjoyable.

Rich deep brown hue with a half inch of tightly woven khaki colored head. Light Brussels lacing. Aroma is sweet dark wheat. The flavor is a bit less sweet than the nose had indicated, but is definitely rich dark wheat. The mouth is cool and smooth.

On tap at the Village Tavern in Geneseo, NY.

This one pours a very murky, sort of ugly brown color, with a small head, and no lacing. Doesn't look pleasing, at all.

Smells like caramel, roasted malt, banana, clove, etc.

This tastes a little bit muddled- it's entirely possible this is pouring weird out of the keg, but I can't tell. The yeast character is pretty strong, definitely get some banana flavor. The rich malt complexity on this, the caramel and breadiness, kinda reminds me of banana bread, which is nice. The taste is a little too syrupy, though. Tastes good, but just feels quite unrefined.

This has a syrupy character to it- I really want something pretty crisp here. The carbonation level is normal.

This is not up the lager master reputation that I assume Urban Chestnut has. It tastes very nice, but it's quite rough around the edges, especially where appearance and mouthfeel are concerned.

It comes in pints! That's cool. Pours a light brown colour, almost tending more toward burnt orange, with 1.5 fingers of tan head. A little light looking as far as a dunkel goes. Smell is of chocolate, toffee, cherry, raspberry, and a toasted malt that has a hint of a pipe tobacco-esque smell. A hint of chocolate and raspberry in the taste, but definitely not to the degree of a framboise lambic or anything like that. There's a tiny bite from the carbontion in the aftertaste, but it's not overpowering because of all the other flavours and a great overall balance. Very pleased with this beer.

A: The beer is clear dark reddish amber in color (brown when viewed from afar) and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger beige head that died down, leaving a collar around the edge and a small patch of bubbles in the center.
S: Moderate aromas of nutty malts are present in the nose along with hints of spicy hops.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste is rather malty and has lots of nutty flavors. There are notes of spicy hops, and while these don't contribute any bitterness they negate any sweetness that you might expect from the malts.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and a little clean on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is nice and malty, but doesn't feel too heavy on the palate.

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a 500ml mug.

A: pours a dark bronze, chestnut-like color (sorry I had to) with a thick off-white head with that slowly settles into a thin lacing

S: very sweet malted barley aroma. No noble hop presence. Kind of one dimensional, just some sweet barley, almost like a brown ale.

T: flavor is a bit more layered than the nose lets on. Toasted, slightly burnt bread with some caramel and toffee sweetness. Very little herbal hop flavor near the end, slightly dry finish. It's a bit too sweet but it's close for the style. Again it reminds me more of a brown ale or an altbier than a dunkel lager. Solid flavors though.

F: full bodied mouthfeel, slightly dry finish

O: it's not the perfect example of a Munich style dunkel but it's close enough and one of the better ones brewed in the US. It isn't close to Ayinger or Kostritzer but it's still well worth trying

My sister brought this back from St. Louis. Thanks Morgo.

Dark autumnal brown-orange. Thick frothy head mandates a careful pour. The label instructs me to see bottle neck for best buy date but I don’t see anything. Cuter squirrel on the label.

Nutty sweet tea aroma.

Flavor is Munich toast malt mixed with southern sweet tea sweetness. Tangy which is a perfect but unfortunate descriptor. More “high” malt notes than “low” malt notes if that makes sense.

I’ve never heard of Urban Chestnut before. Probably won't again unless I end up in St. Louis.

Very underrated brewery making some great German beers. Going to a great German restaurant tomorrow so wanted to prep myself.

Pours a nice fizzy foamy little creamy 1.5 finger head that fades at a med pace, great soapy lacing, slightly clear chestnut slight maroon color.

Nose brings sweet candy malts, toasted notes, a syrupy sugar, caramel syrup and a cola syrup like character, a little toasty biscuit, reddish toasted malts, thankfully the sweet characters fade and turns to more Munich style reddish toasty malt, a touch nutty, some lager yeast notes but not the best of the lager notes as it's almost a hint skunky or some other thing similar like dried beer after you spill it on your clothes, and a touch of a grassy herbal leafy hop.

Taste brings more of the sweet syrupy flavors, big candy notes, biscuit, toffee, toasted grains, molasses, a little fruity candied raisin and a bit nutty as well, some caramel syrup with again a little cola syrup. Thick syrupy fairly sweet not quite but almost mess level of malts sit on the tongue, the fruit comes through a bit, candied fruit again, a little toasted reddish malt Munich malt like, with a molasses bread like character, then into a grassy herbal hop character with just a touch of bitterness. Finish is a bit drier but still sticky sweet, lingering mild candied raisin fruit, toffee, caramel, syrupy molasses, even a little prune, and a touch of bitterness.

Mouth is med to fuller bod, not much of a lager feel maybe a little soft, lighter carb, syrupy.

Overall, well I bragged about how this brewery is underrated and their beers are usually well done German styles, but this was an exception to that. Sweet, syrupy, lots of candy syrupy characters, fruits were nice but too much of a candy syrupy fruit, hops were barely there, the big molasses flavor was not great either, and not much for a lager character either. Still, not terrible, maybe just a hint of off flavor they didn't completely miss the mark.

Pours a brown color. 1/4 inch head of an off-white color. Good retention and good lacing. Smells of sweet malt, dry hop, caramel malt, and slight earthy malt. Fits the style of a Munich Dunkel Lager. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of sweet malt, caramel malt, dry hop, hint of floral, and slight earthy malt. Overall, good appearance, blend, and body.
