The Dunkel style is what many refer to as the original beer of Munich and the surrounding countryside and villages (Dorf in German) of Bavaria. This everyday beer ranges in color from amber to dark brown, depending on the amount of Munich and roasted malts used. Ours is a deep reddish brown with a rich malty flavor. The sweetness of the malt is balanced by the use of another Bavarian friend…the Hallertau hop…in this specific case Hersbrucker grown near Wolnzach, Hallertau.

Half pour at the Bierhall. Another stellar German staple beer executed extremely well. Dunkel is one of my favorite styles in Germany and this is as good as the best there. Rich, roasty, malty goodness with a hint of coffee and cocoa in the finish. Super smooth, perfect carbonation, easy drinker. Would drink often if I was local.

500mL bottle stamped 2023-07-12 (about 6 weeks old) poured into a becher glass at fridge temp 4.8% ABV. The beer pours mostly bright dark amber with copper highlights and khaki colored head. The head recedes to a thin ring and single layer of bubbles. Slight lacing. The aroma is mild with nutty, toasted malt. The taste is semisweet toasted malt with earthy, nutty overtones and a firm, moderate closing bitterness. The mouthfeel is thin to medium bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, very good to excellent dunkel.

A: Pours a dark ruby brown color. A little bit of a murky consistency. A dense white head forms with retention and lacing for days.
S: A warming and inviting aroma of toasted brown bread with a bit of toffee. A simple but enjoyable malty aroma.
T: That baked and toasted brown bread is up front again. Which I love. A bit of sweetness, and toffee. Even toffee covered apples. A light lingering earthy and grassy hoppy flavor that is just enough to balance everything out.
M/O: A medium body with good carbonation. This becomes very smooth and super clean. Very moreish to drink. I can come back to this with ease.

I really like this example of a Dunkel. Not surprising really, as I hold Urban Chestnut in high regard. A nice, nuanced, inviting malt character that is not too sweet. Also very well balanced. Overall, well done, and I'll be looking to get more of this when I can.

Not a winner. No, sir. It’s not exactly Mike Piazza hitting zero home runs in The Home Run Derby, but it’s like some dude fro. Albania coming in 8th in the 100 meter dash (are there 12 competitors in that?) Moving along… Yeah, that’s about it. It’s just a bit above average.

Bow wow wow, my children.

Many thanks to The_Kriek_Friek for this can.

A - Pours a deep caramel chestnut color with nice clarity, vibrant carbonation, and a dense layer of creamy cream colored foam.

S - Malty, bready, and nutty with a slight bit of earthiness on the nose.

T - Bready malt base with light earthiness over top while finishing on the sweeter side with some subtle, underlying earthy citrus.

M - Big medium body with light prickly carbonation.

O - Flavorful and balanced.

Looks the part, nice medium hued brown, off white head; not great retention, very minimal with really nothing sticking around, no lacing to speak of; clarity is decent but there is a cloudiness to it.

I find the nose quite pleasant; a very distinct toasted bread character comes off, there is some husk/grain mixed in too; minimal if any hops on the nose...picking up something slightly and aromatic, yet nondescript; this one is all about the malt, as it warms there is a subtle sweet syrupy smell.

The taste like the nose is all about the toast and bread; it has some walnut like nuttiness to it on the finish but again with toasted like character, old world hops are present on the finish too, earthy like.

Light to medium-light body, drinks pretty smooth; finishes almost completely dry but there is a little something sweet that lingers on the tongue, far from off putting but it is noticeable, low bitterness.

A decent dunkel, nothing special to me but I really enjoyed the toast like characters of this beer, if it were crisper it would take it up quite a bit in my opinion.

thanks to Ken for the can!
L: brown body; tall foamy beige head holds good retention
S: caramelized grain, bread crust, spicy hops
T: toasty grain, caramel, bread crust, nutty grain, mild chocolate, faint roast, spicy/earthy hops
F: light-to-medium body, moderate carbonation, dry and balanced finish
O: dunkel has never been a style I gravitate to - often they feel watered down both in body and flavor, but this is a nice well rounded dunkel

Somewhat translucent brown body, tan head. Taste features dunkel yeast, brown bready tones, hints of caramel malt, dark nuts, slightly dried dark fruits. Smell is more multivitamin yeast forward with the malt tones, bug dark fruit. Feel is smooth light and medium bodied, malt and yeast interact well. This is very very good, would enjoy in spring and fall especially. The wife liked it
