Style: Märzen / Oktoberfest

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.40%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
This “export” style lager, brewed for our annual Oktoberfest celebration, is malty yet well balanced like the bier traditionally served at Oktoberfest in Munich. However, our Festbier has a tale/tail of its own–Oachkatzlschwoaf (pronounced “o-cat-zel-schwof”) translated is “tail of a squirrel”…just a little Bavarian humor.

Amber colored with almost orange highlight in the color. Minimal head retention. Good clarity. Nutty aroma with a bit of light malt. I definitely get plenty of the German lager yeast and it smells very fresh. Smooth and a bit carbonated on the palate. A bit salty and nutty in profile. Fairly refreshing.

Pours an effervescent copper with a thumb of fast falling tan head. Average head retention & lacing, stays effervescent

S: White grapeskin, light crackery notes. Pears & breadyness

T: Pears, brown bread, a little caramel & light leafy hop profile. Grassy hops merge with pears, nice malt backbone, the right amount of sweetness & dryness. Finishes fruity, sweet, & dry with a little herbal hops

MF: Medium body, slight carbonation

Super easy to drink, spot on for the style, no flaws

500mL bottle into a pint glass

A - 2 finger creamy khaki colored head that dissipates slowly. clear amber/orangish beer for the most part but with slight haziness. fast rising carbonation bubble. head dissipates slowly. 3.5/5

S - malty, very malty. caramel sweetness. hops bring a cleanliness to the aroma. 3.75/5

T - caramel sweet then malt forward. grassy bitter hops in the 2nd half of the taste. surprising to find dark stone fruit in the middle of the taste. slight tanginess. 3.75/5

M - carbonation burn along with a drying astringency on the back end. medium bodied. chewy up front but light and drying on the back. 3.5/5

O - more bitterness than expected from this style of beer which draws attention away from the malt. not my favorite oktoberfest. 3.75/5

A very nice Oktoberfest. More dry than most, not really any sweetness. Nice roasted malt flavor with some added nuttiness, yet light and drinkable. Brings forth slight oak tones and just a slight kiss of some hops to support it all.

.5 liter serving tasted in a stein from draught at Firkin on September 18, 2017. Look is amber with a tan head and spotty lacing. Smell and taste is typical Marzen. Feel is light in body with a smooth finish.

This is a very well put together rendition of a traditional Oktoberfest ale. Very drinkable, with no lack of yeastiness and bread to make this a satisfying full lager. Enjoyed the chewy caramel malt which runs through this. Just a very solid beer that goes down a treat during the fall season.

Pours a burgundy-orange with a finger and a half of off-white head. Great head retention with good lacing left behind. Aroma is bread, butter, and biscuit. Flavor profile is bread, biscuit, butter, and rye. Mouth feel is fizzy, with a medium-thin thickness. Overall, a fair Oktoberfest beer. It's sweet, but not super smooth.

Served in a 12oz snifter from a 16oz can.

Poured from 500ml bottle. Good clarity, thin white head, copper color. I'm mainly getting a noble hop aroma. The taste starts with a caramel taste that manages to not be too sweet. The finish is dry. This beer is a new one for me and I am quite impressed with its balance and overall quality. It ranks with Sierra Nevada's Oktoberfest as one of my favorite marzens this fall.
