This “export” style lager, brewed for our annual Oktoberfest celebration, is malty yet well balanced like the bier traditionally served at Oktoberfest in Munich. However, our Festbier has a tale/tail of its own–Oachkatzlschwoaf (pronounced “o-cat-zel-schwof”) translated is “tail of a squirrel”…just a little Bavarian humor.

Had a few of these already and didn't realize I'd missed reviewing. Bottled 08-24-16.

L -- Clear, deep golden bordering on amber, but not at all copper-colored like Spaten or H-P -- even less amber than Ayinger Okto, but a very creamy, rich and dense looking head.

S -- Yeasty to bread-crust nose. Not as rich as some Okto-Märzens, but very inviting.

T -- Light spiciness up front with yeast/bread character following into finish. The hop spiciness lingers through the aftertaste with some very light citrus showing.

F -- Mouthfeel is soft up front to dry in the finish with a medium body.

O -- Not exactly what I expect in an Okto-Märzen, but an incredibly well-made and greatly balanced German-style beer. The flavor characters balanced between malt and hops can illustrate just how good a lower ABV beer can be when made well. I could see this beer surprising a lot of Bavarian beer drinkers -- and maybe it already has!

Poured from a can into a pint glass. Pours orange red with a fluffy white head. Smells of caramelized grain with some fruit. Tastes of bright fruit, caramelized grain, and slight bread. Beer is light bodied and easy drinking, good carbonation. Overall, a very good beer.

O-Katz doesn’t speak to me in sultry ways. Nor does it delight my mind like a beautiful dream. But that’s ok, because it’s not supposed to. It’s not prom queen, it’s not John Daly in his prime, and it’s not the belle of the ball. That being said, O-Katz is still there. It shows up in rain, sleet , and snow (but not when it’s sick, because you need to stay home when you’re sick. “Toughing” it out isn’t cool. You just get other people sick.)

Don’t forget to water your lawn, my minions (unless you’re in Las Vegas of course.)

Canned 8/1/23; drank 8/24/23 @ the Yarchives.

Semi-opaque dull orange appearance.

A rough pour yielded a nice off-white head; frothy lacing remained.

Toasted wheat bread, mild caramel & autumn leaf notes in the nose.

Creamy, medium mouthfeel.

Autumn leaves & mild caramel flavors up front; mild brown sugar & faint hop bite notes on the finish.

A real nice Oktoberfest beer!

Dark honey colored body; clear; dense, lively carbonation; thick, white, and creamy textured head. Malty nose; mild notes of caramel and toffee. Light brown sugar flavor with a rich, toasted grain overtone; mild to moderate hop bitterness. Medium body; mild residual sugar mouthfeel; semi-dry at the finish.

All in all, a nice Oktoberfest beer that emphasizes malt toastiness above being overly-sweet. Balanced and easy drinking.

Somewhat hazy and copper and n color with a decent head, nice look here. Sweet malty nose on this is nice. Flavor is decent if not a bit light. Semi sweet start and a malty finish but almost a crisp finish. Did I mention good flavor. This has some body, decent brew here.

Mostly clear orangey amber body with a white head and prevalent spotted lacing. Yeast is the star of the smell and taste, very expressive with crusty white bread omnipresent and accents of floral tones. Smell has toasted malts to go with. Taste has more full on toast as distinct from the malt and yeast, hints of caramel and a whisper of nuts to boot. Feel is medium bodied, crushable yet has some chew to it, pretty smooth too with decent yeast and malt textures through out the sip.

This is part of a 2021 series of reviewing Oktoberfest marzens and festbiers.

The beer store clerk said this was the best of the domestic Oktoberfests, and I tend to agree. Smell is booze-forward, as is the taste. The malts and sweetness are perfect. I had this in a can and the carbonation was a little on the flat side, but not completely out of style as marzens can be a little tame with carbonation. If you like Hofbrau's Oktoberfest, you'll like this one too. Prost!

Oktoberfest is my favorite beer during the fall. I never drank a beer from Urban Chestnut, looking forward to consuming this one. No bottling date on the can. The can is ordinary looking with a shadow of a squirrel on the front. The beer is fresh from the fridge with a temperature of 42 degrees. I used a pint glass to serve the beer. The pour of the beer formed a two-fingered off-white head. The retention of the head is fair and left no lacing on the glass. The color is SRM 12, a medium amber color with deep gold color. The clarity of the beer is clear. The appearance of the beer is okay for this style. A little bit longer-lasting head would have been nice.

Initial aromas in the beer are caramel, spicy floral hops, and toasted malts. Next, I detect cooked green veggies, herbal, and a touch of nuttiness.

I taste caramel, spicy hops, cooked veggies, herbal, nuttiness, toasted malts, bread crust, and a touch of moldiness.

The mouthfeel of the beer is creamy and slick.

The body of the beer is medium, low carbonation, and mild finish.

Sadly, this beer is a drain pour. The cooked veggies are too much to drink. Not sure what happened with this beer. I will revisit this beer later; maybe it will be better.
