Decanted from a 12 oz (355 ml) bottle into a conical pint; bottled 02/16/2017.
A: Pours a hazy, orange-amber color with a one inch, egg-shell white head showing strong retention and lacing. Yeast sediment evident in the glass
S: Aromas of citrus and toast predominate. Maybe a mango note.
T: Flavors follow the nose, with citrus, mango/papaya, and caramel. Hoppy bitterness kicks in slowly with pleasant pine/eucalyptus aftertaste.
M: Medium bodied with strong carbonation.
O: Really a nicely constructed, complex Double IPA. Enjoy

Reviewed from notes taken in February 2015. Served on-draught into stemware at Torst in Brooklyn, NY.

HEAD: None. No lacing.

BODY: Hazy orange-copper with a bit of haze. Clean; no yeast/sediment is visible within.

Appears aptly carbonated. Not a unique or special appearance for the style.

AROMA: Heavy on hop resins, which I love. Pale malts. Faint pine. Vague floral hop aromatics.

Aromatic intensity is below average; this is somewhat withdrawn for an imperial IPA. I detect no overt yeasty notes, alcohol, or off-notes.

TASTE: Resinous, piney, floral. Pale malt sweetness nicely checks the hop bitterness, keeping this beer well-balanced. Well built as well, but not as complex/intricate, subtle, or nuanced as the best beers in the style, lacking the hop pungency and diversity of hop flavour observed in many great imperial IPAs.

Above average depth of flavour. Average flavour duration and intensity.

I do like it, but it leaves something to be desired and the hop profile could be more harmonious and memorable.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, slightly overcarbonated, unrefreshing, and medium-bodied. Of moderate thickness.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough, or scratchy.

Complements the taste okay, but fails to elevate the beer as a whole. Doesn't accentuate specific flavours.

OVERALL: Quite drinkable for its ABV and for the style, but not notable amongst the myriad expressions thereof. It's a nice imperial IPa but far from a world class one. I'd like to try it again to review it in finer grain, and it's well worth trying.

When beers not only cost more, but come in a four-pack instead of a six-pack, it had better be something special. Port City's Maniacal Double IPA doesn't disappoint.

First off, there's the alcohol content: 8.6 percent; definitely nothing to sneeze at.

It's also a bitter beer, which should be expected for an IPA, never mind a double IPA. What's surprising is that there's an initial–though admittedly strong–taste of hops. But underneath the bitterness there's a sweetness that's a bit disarming.

Talking about waking softly and carrying a big, hoppy stick!

The color is rich and golden, with a nice, though minimal, frothy head. This is a delicious, complex IPA from Port City, perhaps their showiest beer. The scent is vaguely of licorice, and hay (?).

But it's good to know that when Port City calls a brew 'Maniacal' they mean it because this is a big, bold beer that manages to be interesting and nuanced at the same time.

It's obviously bottled conditioned because there are many clumps of yeast. The liquid has many suspended particles. Darker amber color. Small head which settles to rim bubbles. No lace.

A bit of a stew aroma. Little hop.

I get a bread flavor initially. The taste has an alcohol warmth to it. There's a strong semi-sweet finish to the otherwise bitter swallow. The aftertaste is balanced well. Richer body with a lower carbonation level.

Pours a hazy golden orange with a 2 1'2 finger white chunky head that leaves light lacing.

Smell of caramel, citrus, and a bit of spice.

Rather bitter in taste upfront. Powerful, but now overwhelming. This recedes somewhat, as the beer warms, and the flavor opens up to caramel and ripe citrus with a light to moderate bitter follow through and a hint of spice.

Medium full in body. Very smooth with light carbonation and a syrupy retention

After the initial onslaught of bitterness, the beer settles down and mellows out. Very well balanced with great flavor and aroma. The ABV is well disguised.

From a bottle, pours a cloudy gold/orange with a white fluffy head. Aroma is dominated by hops, with perhaps some citrus tones. Taste is hop-forward (although you can find even more hops in other beers, e.g., Hop Devil, Victory Brewing). Maniacal is 1) more balanced, 2) more interesting with the addition of citrus & pine flavors, and ultimately, 3) more drinkable. Solid, but I still prefer the fuller bodies of Stouts.

A-a hazy yellow orange color with a fingers worth of white head that slowly disappears to leave a light layer of lace

S-citrus and tropical fruits and light bready malts

T-taste is similar to the smell with lots of citrus, light tropical fruits, light caramel malt, and a piney bitter finish

M-medium body, moderate carbonation

Overall not the best example of a DIPA, but one of the better offerings I have had from Port City
