Served in a shaker pint glass at WhirlyBall - Vernon Hills.

Incorrectly listed on BeerMenus as "1901 Stout", this stuff is brewed from a recipe from, you guessed it, 1801. It pours a very dark black-brown topped by a finger of sandstone foam. The nose comprises light roasted malts, toasted caramel, a hint of mint, and a vague collection of spices sprinkled way in the background. The taste brings in more of the same, with more roast and a touch of that Guinness-like sourness. The body is a light-leaning medium, with a light moderate carbonation, a sorta/kinda smooth feel, and a sorta/kinda drying finish. Overall, a solid stout, one that doesn't overdo it on any front, and one that looks to be decently sessionable (ABV notwithstanding).

Taste: Complex, smokey, semi sour, dark malts. Nose has hints of tobacco and sour yeast. Black/Brown, mostly opaque with a smaller head in a taster glass. Medium body. Alcohol can sneak up on you.
