From Batch 2 on November 24, 2013

The beer pours some very light head that dissipates quickly. The beer itself is a dark purple that borders on black. The smell has very strong oak notes that crowd out the other notes a little bit. The other slight notes consist of sweet malts, sweet chocolate with a bit of caramel, and a bit of roasted malts as well. The smell also has a funk note that appears to be a mix of cherry and granny smith apples that mix with the oak and could be mistaken for the oak. The taste is very complex with various notes mixing with one another. The fun consists of a cherry tart with a bit of oak around the edges. The caramel chocolate, sweet malts, and roasted malts are there but still faint. The mouthfeel has very little carbonation and is heavy bodied. The beer goes down fairly smooth. Overall, a fairly decent addition and good considering how long it must have been aging in the bottle.

Really underrated beer in my opinion.

1 pint 9.4 oz bottle poured into a Duvel tulip style glass. Liquid comes out black and it pretty much clings to the edges. Coffee with too much cream colored head with small bubbles. Head goes away pretty quick leaving a ring around the edges not too much in the way of lacing.

Smell is interesting but good. Smells slightly funky fruity tartness kind of like a cranberry but not nearly as dry. Some aromas of charred caramel and dark roasted coffee and dark chocolate.

Taste is very good and it's very unique. There's a strong malt backbone here. Lots of flavors of roasted dark grains. Almost over roasted. Very present flavors of Oakey vanilla. Barley tart at all which surprised me considering the smell. Nice tasting beer.

Mouthfeel is awesome in every aspect. Shockingly light feel with a soft carbonation level. Crazy well balanced with good sweetness and bitterness. Silky smooth with a dry bitter finish. Almost zero heat from the barrel. Other than flavor I wouldn't have thought this was barrel aged. Crazy drinkable and overall just a well done beer.
