No date or batch info on the bottle, but this a one-off. Released mid-March.

A: Pours a dark brown with red highlights. Decent sized fizzy light brown head. Head is soda-like and fizzes out almost instantly. No lacing, no head retention at all. Looks still in the glass within seconds of pouring in fact. Looking closely does reveal a small amount of bubbles still.

S: Now that's an interesting aroma. Clear spicy rye whiskey but tempered with some sweet dark fruits. Raisins, grapes and maybe even fig? Doesn't smell hot at all, especially for a 12% rye-barrel monster. Rye is especially strong when swirled, with just a hint of oak in there too. Only reason the aroma doesn't get a higher score is because it's oddly subtle. Maybe due to lack of carbonation?

T: Loaded with rye whiskey up front. Heavy spicy rye bread right from the get go. Masterson's is one of the best ryes out there and it really shines in this beer. A bit of oaky vanilla compliments it. Lots of sweet dark fruits poke through, again I get raisins and grapes primarily. Bready malt with the rye is a nice combination. Prickly spices in the finish, more rye with maybe cloves? Surprisingly not boozy given the strength of the barrel aging and the strength of the beer itself. Lingering oaky dryness with long lasting spiciness. Beer has an overlaying sugary quality that really helps calm the whole thing down by sweetening everything up.

M: Heavy body, sugary and slick. Spicy to boot which gives it the prickly quality that is lost from the lower carbonation.

O: I honestly had reservations about how a rye whiskey would go with a quad. The combination of spiciness and fruitiness is surprisingly good. Well balanced characteristics. Barrel is prominent but not TOO overpowering. Just right in my opinion, especially to highlight such a good whiskey. Very mellow from a booziness standpoint which is surprising and impressive. I've had almost every beer that Mystic makes and this might be the best. Up there with the sauvignon blanc saison they did a year or two ago. Nicely done, Mystic.
