From BeerAdvocate Magazine #83 (Dec 2013):

We absolutely love the rustic character that comes from the bottle conditioning even if it does spill over a bit, figuratively and literally. It may not rival its German counterparts, but it certainly throws down, especially compared to most other American-brewed Rauchbiers.

STYLE: Rauchbier
ABV: 5.4%
AVAILABILITY: Year-round

LOOK: Hazed deep mahogany hue, lively head

SMELL: Thick smokiness, yeast, bready, smoke-cured meat, hay, ash

TASTE: Very crisp, expressive carbonation, smooth, fluffy body, stern smokiness throughout, bread crust, animal feed graininess, hint of black tea, nutty yeast, roasted chestnuts, faint leather; smoky, drying finish

500 ml. bottle purchased at Kappy's and poured into a large wine glass. Pours a deep amber in the light and a light brown on the tabele, relatively clear and with a light tan cap of foam which shows average retention.

Aroma of smoked malts and a bit of caramel. Clean and smoky out of the gate with an earthy smokiness developing with warming. Firmly carbonated on the palate with a hint of bacon and smoke whick lingers somewhat through the finish.

Feel is smooth and a bit light in texture for the style, offering a decent body with some caramel sweetness and a moderate delivery of smoked malts. Nice and approachable and quite honestly better than expected from an unknown brewery. Not overly smoky and fairly well balanced overall.

Note: Batch 001

Smoked wood type smell.. Smokey taste.. Very different then any other beer.. Lives up to the name for its smokeyness lol.. Making up words to describe this beer.. It has a dark look to it.. Great beer to have at a BBQ to go along with some ribs... Mystic brewery brews this beer very well..

I had to add more in my review.. This is one of the best smoke beers I've tasted.

16.9oz bottle purchased as a single from Yankee Spirits, Sturbridge, MA. Batch 001.

Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed a 1/4" tan head over the cloudy reddish brown brew. Head dwindles down to a skim and holds, with coating, slow-falling lace. Aroma is malty, with wisps of smoke.

Taste is sweet upfront, earthy and smoky through the middle, with a rouned lightly bitter close. Mouthfeel is very soft and smooth, with easy drinkability. Nice brew, but I think Red would expect something with more smoke upfront if named after him.

Poured from bottle into tulip.

A reddish-brown mahogany colored pour with about a half inch of dense tan head. Foam did not last too long. A pretty looking beer.

Aroma - light smoke. Wood smoke, not BBQ smoke, no meat in there. A faint whiff of chocolate and some sweetness. Caramel. The smokiness is subtle - it's not an overwhelming smoky aroma.

Taste - the first thing I picked up was sweetness. Not syrupy-thick sweetness, but I thought I was going to get smoke first. The smoky flavor is well-integrated into the beer overall - very nice layering of flavors. The malt in general makes a nice statement.

This was an easy drinking beer. Very creamy, not highly carbonated, oddly refreshing. Doesn't coat the tongue - very light, somewhat short-lived flavor.

I really enjoy this beer. I don't believe that the smoke is as strong as it should be to strictly fulfill the style, but I don't mind that. It is a beer I enjoyed regardless of this "deviation". This would be just as enjoyable sitting around the campfire or the fireplace. Very accessible, nicely built beer.

Appearance: muddy red, tan head, fast dissipation, minimal lace.

Aroma: smoke, caramel, wood, figs, soft roast.

Taste: caramel, brown sugar, faint woodsy smoke, tannic, mild.

Mouthfeel: light, creamy, low carbonation, slick.

Overall: aroma was nice, but the taste and feel was awfully bland, leaving much to be desired.

Thanks Carl! Glad to have been able to try it....wish I could appreciate it more! :(

light brown mahogany color with a off white head that petered out fairly quickly.
aroma is a medium smoke with chocolate notes
the taste is wonderfully balanced. not to sweet, bitter, phenolic, or smokey. neutral clean yeast with delicate smokey malts over caramel and neutralizing hops that play there role.
excellent flavor with little aftertaste of sweet and smoke.
wonderful beer here that I will visit again. no fouls here for me. great job

Poured from the Batch 001 bottle into a modified tulip glass. Deep char brown hue, light 1 finger head and lazy lacing throughout the experience.

A - Deeply colored, lightly laced, lovely beer. A little swirl and shazam, pillowy creamy head.

S - Camp fire on a starry night, green apple, grass, and a caramel dessert. Fine nose with interesting hints of mint as it warms.

T - Light smoke taste, warm, brown sugar, broad leaf tobacco, roast cashew.

M - Dances across the tongue, light effervecence, fine carbonation. Pleasantly avoids being siccly sweet.

O - Wonderful beer, performs exactly as advertised, smoky with being overbearing, not to heavy in any aspect. Mystic deserves all the praise for this offering.

Cheers

Bottle from Downtown Wine and Spirits.
Pours a fairly clear dark brown with ruby highlights and a smallish off white head that dissipates rather quickly. Smells of charred wood and smoked ham mostly with hints of sweet caramel malts deep underneath. The flavor starts off sweet with hints of caramel and brown sugar and bits of burnt wood. The palette quickly dries out and leaves a smokey almost fruity taste coating the inside of my mouth. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a sweet phenolic mouthfeel. Pretty good rauchbier that's not too over the top meaty at the campfire.

Appearance: dark-brown in color, 1/3 inch head, moderate carbonation, clear

Smell: toasted malt and rauch smoke

Taste: toasted malt, rauch smoke, chocolate, and sweet caramel

Mouthfeel: low carbonation, medium body, sweet and smoky

Overall: Very good for a domestic rauch. Sweet, malty, and smoky. I could do several of these. It is a favorite amongst Mystic's non-Belgian beers.
