Had this beer on tap at the Nook in Huntsville, AL on a warn November evening. Since I was siting in the outdoor patio area it was hard to see the color but it was very dark and opaque. There was no head on this pour but that did not distract from the uniquely awesome taste. It has a smooth mellow taste with lots of malt and a hint of maybe pumpkin and hardly any hops. It even went good with a big bowl of red beans and rice. A bit expensive at $9 a glass but well worth the the price for the experience of just drinking it. I would buy it again and again if available. Yellowhammer continues to set the standard for Northern Alabama.

Mouthfeel was a little too flat, though not undrinkable. Maybe a bottling issue.

Poured from 32 oz growler into goblet.

A: Ruby tinted dark brown with a slight one finger head that dissipated quickly. Not much if any lacing.

S: Dark fruits, raisin, and caramel mixed with Belgian yeast. A little bit of earthiness which I suppose is from the cherry wood.

T: Fairly big malts up front. Nice sweetness that is typical of a good Belgian dark. Some spiciness and hints of cherry in the back.

M: Fairly light but full bodied. Lightly carbonated.

O: A really nice Belgian dark. The subtle flavors from the cherry wood adds a nice touch. Perfect fall beer. Glad that I grabbed a couple of bottles to save for later.

Very smooth, can't taste the high alcohol content at all. Reminds me of Le Fin du Monde

I had this brew at the magic city brewfest. I then found it on tap a J. Clyde. Wow this is a deceiving brew. There is no doubt three alcohol is prevalent. The brew is very easy to ship. I loved it. The dark hue, raisin lighter that expected malt feel allowed the alcohol to breathe but was not overwhelming at 10.50% abv. This brew was aged on cherry wood for three months. Most definitely a brew that if you are a bug Belgian strong brew lover this one is for you. Another Yellowhammer top notch brew. Now I cannot wait until this fall so I can get it again. Maybe sample a little from last year and this year. Hopefully someone will be able to do a vertical tasting. :-)

Wood aging, fruit flavors, spice balances, sweet, heat and savory, the Belgian-style darker stronger ale of Yellowhammer seems to be a collection of pieces and parts of other ale gone awry. But instead, their masterful culmination is a seamless, streamlined ale with complexity, variety and boldness from sip to finish.

Crimson and rust in color, the beer's dark bronze haze builds a spirited froth of soft sepia cream. Bold aromatics of honey glaze carries a stone fruit, pitted fruit scent with a vinous spice and a tingle of booze to start the show. Sweet to taste, the condensed malt flavors take on the sorghum, toffee and brown sugar taste for an utmost savory and succulent upstart.

As the ale opens up, its sweetness is lifted slightly from the effervescence that springs from underneath. Gently rolling along, the malts meet up with the fruitiness of cherry, red berry, red grape, currant, fig, date and raisin. Taking on a fruitcake culmination, the beer's balance comes way of cinnamon, peppercorn, vinous red wine, wood spices and a smack of brandy-like booziness.

Full and lavish in body, the beer's carbonation remains creamy and provides a pillowy texture to the fortified ale and keeping the taste from cloying or unnecessary weight. Somewhat barleywine-like and long with a sweet and spicy finish, the overcast of cherry wood is always present, offering the plethora of complexities a nutty and robust fruit tang.
