Small tasting room up front features two taps offering free tasters and reasonably priced growlers and growler fills of the same. Samples of various malt and hops are in jars for you to smell. A few mismatched pieces of furniture adorn the room but remain largely unused.

Around back (through the ample parking lot), you'll find a gated-in patio space with numerous tables and chairs. Inside you walk right into the brewing machinery and rows upon rows of freshly filled kegs. There is also a small stage and a few sets of chairs scattered near-by.

You can order a pint close to the stage or have one promptly brought to you by the attentive, friendly, casual (hip) waitstaff.

The same two beers were the only things available surprisingly, though perhaps their capacity doesn't allow them to easily brew many more at once. No guest taps.

They don't have food, though a food truck is frequently invited in for the evening.

A friendly lively crowd, good live music, bicycle friendly but still with plenty of parking if you require it...decent beer - all in all worth visiting if you are visiting the area.

I love Harriet, so it pains me to write a somewhat tepid review. They opened one of the first taprooms in Minnesota, and batch 1 of West Side was one of my favorite beers ever.

But a recent visit prompted me to write this.

First the good: This place has such a strong neighborhood vibe. There is live music and a food truck virtually every day, a house cat, and plenty of original artwork on the walls. When there isn't a musical act, the ambient music comes from the house vinyl collection or a DJ. Musical genres are all over the map, which is a welcome relief from some local breweries that only play the various shades of metal.

The beer is mostly inspired by Belgian and German styles, but they also offer a Sahti and an American IPA on tap. I'll refrain from reviewing them here, since each is different and can be reviewed separately. Selection is good for a brewery of this size.

Now for the bad. First of all, the place is a little dirty-looking, and there is a single unisex bathroom that I have not found especially well-kept. Additionally, the website is not kept up to date. Before my last visit, I was pleasantly surprised to see their Belgian-style stout listed as "on-tap" on their website, but upon arriving, was told that it had not been on tap for over a month. That's inexcusable.

Ultimately, it's those kinds of details that really hurt my ratings for this place. If they fix them, I'll revise.

This is another brewery on my bike route. There is a big garage at the back of the brewery where you can either fill a growler or stand around and drink with 50 or so of your closest friends. In decent weather things spill out into the parking lot and there is usually a food truck or two around. Their beer somehow tastes better in the brewery than anywhere else. If you are touring Minneapolis's craft breweries this is a must.

When I lived in Minneapolis, Harriet was my go to spot. It's an unassuming warehouse space on the city's south side, and the owner/head brewer is usually on had whipping up the next batch of beer. Their mainstay brews are tasty and they seem to lean towards the fruity side of Belgians. Harriet is also a big supporter of the local and regional music scene, and they usually have a band or DJ on hand to provide a soundtrack to fit the festive mood.
