Very Good
Hop LogicHop Logic
Notes: Hop Logic Imperial IPA is brewed for the true "Hop Head." The nose bursts with fresh hop aromas while the palate is balanced with just enough bitterness to linger without overwhelming the more subtle among the hops flavors. The winning equation is – five quality malts plus five flavorful hops equals one fine beer! Sounds logical to us.

Citrusy, minty hop nose with traces of fruit. Pours hazy gold amber under a 1” off-white foam cap that dissipates to a thick film. Hop Logic enters creamy and malty laced with fruit and then the big hops come on with a minty, herbal, lingering hop bitterness with a touch of alcohol heat. Behind the pleasant bitterness lurk faint traces of peach and a suspicion of cardamom. Medium full body and moderate carbonation.

Pours a rich amber colour, some lightness to it. Head is pale beige/cream-coloured. Big bubbles but settles into good nodules of foam with nice lace trails left behind. Looks pretty nice.

Smells hugely hoppy. Mega-citric with notes of pine bark and resin, and spicy edge to that resin. Bit too much, it just smells overly intense and hoppy.

Tastes a bit old, actually. Didn't expect that from the amount of hops on the nose. But honey, sweetness, slight touch of flat cardboard, in fact and yeah, vanilla and cinnamon. At the back are definite hops - citric and slightly resinous, but it overall tastes a bit flat and almost old, despite the hop presence which is there. Just subdued.

Decent body, not much hop pull. Feels quite bitty, almost solid. Quite nice though.

Drinks alright, but doesn't really emphasise enough of its decent characters.

22oz brown bomber purchased from Jane's Beer Store in Mountain View, CA, where the guy called this his "Pliny-killer". Brought back to Sydney where I shared it with Sam.

Lovely clear but deep golden colour with a very fine head that leaves some messy lace. Body is fine, but thick, holding a lot of static carbonation. Really, it looks very good for the style.

Nose is also pretty nice, but perhaps lacking the brightness and intensity of the best examples. There is a really nice rounded orange citrus note that works with the light malt sweetness. Some vague toffee characters help structure it, giving the hop notes a bit more basis.

Taste is very decent, with some nice balance to it. There's a solid toffee-sugar focused basis through the centre of the palate, but lifted by a nice citric hop character that gives it freshness. It does stay pretty flat, without a huge amount of complexity, but that's nice in a way: it has a dichotomous quality to it, with the malt and the hops each very individual, but each contributing to the beer as a whole.

Feel is nice. Very fine and sleek.

Overall, is this a Pliny-killer? Not by a long shot. And that comes from someone who doesn't consider Pliny one of the better American IPAs out there. This is indeed a very solid addition to the IPA oeuvre, but it really doesn't expand or redefine the style.

Grapefruity smell, fabulous hoppy color,, very balanced taste, the bitter is very much there but quiets on the finish. Very classy IPA, is that the Imperial? Pretty Imperial to me. I usually do not pay $8 for a 22 ounce bottle but I am glad to get this one.
