Brewed by:
High Water Brewing
California, United States

Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Hop Logic Imperial IPA is brewed for the true "Hop Head." The nose bursts with fresh hop aromas while the palate is balanced with just enough bitterness to linger without overwhelming the more subtle among the hops flavors. The winning equation is – five quality malts plus five flavorful hops equals one fine beer! Sounds logical to us.

Time to pull out my High Water tulip pint. Pours a medium-light amber color. It's quite clear, no sediment in the bottle. Medium-large off-white head. Very good lacing and retention. The aroma is a mix of pine and citrus-y tropical fruits, a pineapple on a pine tree. I'm also getting some tangerine, honeysuckle, grapefruit, mango, raspberry, cherry, grass. There's some solid caramel and toffee sweetness sitting in the background, though not quite far enough back for my taste in the style. Taste starts out bright but gets a bit of harsh bitterness after a second. It's not too bitter, just a bit bland once some greener, more herbal hop flavors start chiming in. Still, it's nice and smooth for the most part. Somewhat sweet but the finish dries things out a bit. Medium bitter, herbal finish. Otherwise, it's similar to the aroma, a mix of smooth, fairly rich malt sweetness and citrus/tropical/pine hop flavors. More of the malt flavor comes out. It has a rich, layered feel, like a toned down quality English strong ale. Mouthfeel is pretty smooth for the abv and style. The malt smoothness makes it easy to drink, though despite coming in at 9.5% abv. Little bit of hop oiliness. Interesting beer. If the hop flavor was brighter and juicier, this would be a real winner. As is, it falls short, but I think it's a good sign for High Water.

Citrusy, minty hop nose with traces of fruit. Pours hazy gold amber under a 1” off-white foam cap that dissipates to a thick film. Hop Logic enters creamy and malty laced with fruit and then the big hops come on with a minty, herbal, lingering hop bitterness with a touch of alcohol heat. Behind the pleasant bitterness lurk faint traces of peach and a suspicion of cardamom. Medium full body and moderate carbonation.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a medium golden amber with a nice two finger white head with good retention and tons of pillowy lacing. Great aroma of resinous piney and citrus hops, sweet bready malt, tempting. Flavor is unusual, with an immediate piney hop assault that seems to shut down the taste buds, leaving an interesting biscuity taste at the roof of my mouth. Followed by light citrus and tropical fruit, biscuit malt, piney, herbal hops and finishing with a lingering herbal hop bitterness. Medium bodied with light creaminess. I have to say the initial flavor assault is unusual, but there is plenty of malt support for the intense hops and I found the apparent confusion of my taste buds to be pleasant. Most aggressively hopped beers are not to my taste if they do not have good flavor support, but I really found the flavor and intense hops here enjoyable. I really enjoyed this worthy imperial IPA.

Pours a bright and Lear light gold color with a very nice white head.

Aromas are of resin, hard candies, and some stinky floral notes. Smells a little off to me.

Taste is resiny and floral up front. Some earthiness, light hard candy sweetness, and general pine bitterness. The finish is bitter and crisp, with a real mineral like bite on the finish. This is a flavorful DIPA, but the bitterness is strong, and this lacks balance.

Mouthfeel is smooth, full, and crisp with nice carbonation.

Overall, this is a pretty good, but overly bitter DIPA that could use some clean up and balance to be really good. I'd pass on this again with the $7 price tag though.

Very little hop character. Syrup taste from the malt.

Grapefruity smell, fabulous hoppy color,, very balanced taste, the bitter is very much there but quiets on the finish. Very classy IPA, is that the Imperial? Pretty Imperial to me. I usually do not pay $8 for a 22 ounce bottle but I am glad to get this one.
