Sticke (shtee-ka) is a German special alt that is darker and stronger than traditional Düsseldorf altbiers. Meaning ’Secret’, Sticke originated when brewers still measured ingredients by hand. When a brewer accidentally made a stronger, maltier beer, this secret was passed around by word of mouth and locals enjoyed the rich malt character and balanced, spicy hop flavor of this special brew.

On tap at The Commons soft grand opening, 12.4.11, $4 a glass.

Dark brown opaque body under medium tan one-finger head, medium dissipation and no visible carbonation due to dark hue. Stone fruit up front, raisins, some prunes, floral hops offset by significant yeast presence. Taste mirrors the nose, pretty yeasty, this might need a bit more time for the yeast to do its work, good stone fruit presence, however. Mouthfeel just on the full side of medium, ok effervescence, pretty dry finish. This may need a bit more time/work but certainly shows a lot of promise in a niche market that, surprisingly, hasn't been filled in Beervana. Looking forward to trying this again down the line.
