Brewed by:
Mother's Brewing Company
Missouri, United States

Style: Belgian IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.30%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
Fancy Pants is a memorable little number. Fermented with an abbey yeast, Mother's medium to full-bodied Belgian-Style IPA is slightly malty, a bit vinous, hoppy and fruity. A showy helping of freshly harvested Galaxy hops gives Fancy its pleasant bitter finish.

Was happy to find this on draft in Joplin, MO, but now time to get a little more in depth...

No freshness dating, come on Mother's!

Pours an effervescent & ever so-slightly hazed amber with 3 fingers of eggshell colored head. Hazes a bit more on the bottle drain, great head retention & even better lacing

S: Pineapple, grapefruit peel (pink) & grassiness, plus pineapple, some breadyness late to the game

T: Grapefruit pith, grassiness, a hint of mintyness & some yeasty bite up front. A touch of breadyness, blends with mintyness & grapefruit pith, plus a touch of herbal hops & leafiness as this warms, plus a bit of pear. Finishes with much grapefruit & pineapple with a touch of breadyness

MF: Medium bodied, delicate carbonation, nice balance

Drinks really easy, seemed like there was more citrus pop in the draft version, but both have their merits. American slant here in the vein of let's say tank7 for Saisons, another winner from your Mom from Springfield, MO! To me, this a DIPA with a Belgian Slant, but no matter how you slice it, lovely...

A - Pours a bright golden with a slight haze. It has a 2 finger offwhite head with very good retention and nice lacing

S - Aromas of grapefruit, grass, and pine. There is a nice malty background as well

T - Very tasty. Lots of grapefruit and grass tastes up front. I am also detecting apples and raisins.

M - Good thick beer. Warms the palate and the bitterness lingers. Great mouth feel

T - Very good beer. Nice aroma, good and thick. Id call it a perfect winter IPA. Has a nice warming effect. It is different tasting than most IPAs on the market also

Obtained a 4 Pack in the fall of 2013 and found one last bottle in February of 2014. It is a very interesting taste/aroma being an IPA or Belgian Style IPA. Below are notes

A - Great pour (using wine glass to control aroma), contained minimal head even after 10 plus minutes. Hazy like a traditional Belgian, but darker golden in appearance.

A - Aroma was more minimal than expected being an IPA. While notes of grapefruit are recognized, an almost fruity ester appeared that leads towards the taste section. What's odd is a banana type aroma (not strong), that gave an almost creamy yet fruity smell that goes with the IPA.

T - This is where the IPA starts to hit the road on the front side yet with the back side you pick back up some sort of Lambic vibe with a bubblegum taste, almost as if an IPA missed the turn to India and was journeyed on a boat up a river in Belgium if that might make any sense. Great taste nonetheless and a very interesting texture.

M - Good balance, non-aggressive with the Galaxy hops, fruity type feel

O - Very good beer from Mothers, Missouri and the region as a whole. At 9.3% and 72 IBU [which I think (IBU) is actually a bit too high] it brings together an interesting, complex mixture of a high end Brit style IPA that incorporates the fruity tastes of a Belgian Lambic in a way that could be pulled off in America. Watch the intake though as the 9.3% can catch up quick.
