Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Three Blind MiceBourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Three Blind Mice
Notes: Imperial Three Blind Mice, once Mother's little brown beer, is now all grown up and running the show. Left to rest and age in bourbon barrels, this beer is rich and full bodied with chocolate, coffee and caramel malt flavors. It bestows a beautiful bourbon character and balanced finish on its loyal subjects. This is one regal brew fit for a king - out on the town or home in the castle.

Pours a brown that is just a shade off of black. Head formation is a finger in height, khaki in color, and retains fairly well. Good patches of lacing left behind. Aroma is bourbon with a little sugary caramel, toffee, and molasses behind. Biscuit, and roasted malts form a sturdy foundation. Flavor profile is sweet notes of caramel, toffee, and molasses mixed in with bitter notes of biscuit and roasted malts. Bourbon and oak are present throughout, giving it a flavor boost. Mouth feel is medium-thick with a velvety texture. Overall, a tasty bourbon barrel ale. It has a quality balance, all the while showing a variety of notes.

Served in a 12oz snifter from a 22oz bottle.

Helping to put Springfield, MO on the map for sure. This is another one of theirs that I think is underrated. Great taste and nose. Not as bold as some BB stouts, but sometimes I am not after something too heavy that still carries same BB characteristics. Easy to enjoy, sad when it's gone!

Brown with two fingers of light tan head.

Bourbon, vanilla, caramel, toffee and brown bread in the aroma.

The taste largely follows the nose, with the different elements smoothly blended. I generally prefer big imperial stouts and barleywines for bourbon barrel aging, but this "Imperial" base holds up just fine and definitely shows some brown ale malt character. Whatever bittering hops are in there help with balance, preventing it from being very sweet. The bready malts and slight bitterness linger with the vanilla bourbon and kiss of alcohol in the aftertaste.

Great, creamy body, with a touch of carbonation. Medium bodied.

This is a fantastic beer. Tastes like a BBA brown ale, not a stout.

L - Pours a muddled dark brown that is bordering on black with a plum skin purple hue to it. The khaki one finger head holds up well and dissipates to a ring around the glass. I didn't notice much lacing.

S - What a sniff! Just a rich texture of bourbon, vanilla, malt, toffee, caramel and brown sugar. I could smell this for days, so enticing and inviting.

T - Straightforward and follows the nose. Rinse and repeat and I'm in love!

F - Medium bodied and medium carbonation. The smooth liquid has an alcohol burn to it.

O - Looking past the alcohol burn, this is a great beer. I just happen to love bourbon so it works out. Everything else falls in place as really enjoyable.

This one is hot! As in if you don't like a "bourbon burn" steer clear. From the nose to the finish, bourbon is extremely present. Some dark fruity notes in between. I would get again, but cellar it for at least 6 months to see if the bourbon dies down a tad.

2015 Edit: I got to revisit this beer, and the 2015 is not as hot, so I gave it a little bump in rating over last year. The dark fruity notes were more prevalent in the nose as well as the mouthfeel. Very raisin-like with a nice carbonation.

22oz bottle. Poured out a very dark brown color with a small, off-white head of foam. It smelled boozy with bourbon, oak, vanilla and toffee. Sweet caramel and toffee flavors with bourbon, charred oak and vanilla notes.

Pours a mahogany hued amber chestnut with a thumb of tan head. Viscious look to this, middling head retention & lacing

S: Bourbon, figs, & raisins; nose picks up as it warms

T: Follows the nose, some brown sugar & boozeyness as well up front. Dryness, figs, raisins, toffee & brown sugar sweetness mix with sourmash as this warms, a little molasses as well. Finishes warming, figgy with Bourbon, dryness, with a big-time oaky twang & brown sugar

MF: Medium bodied, fairly firm carbonation, warming

Drinks alright, this beer could probably use 6 months more of aging minimum, not perfection by any measure

Pours chocolate brown with a small tan colored head. Head disappears quick and leaves no lacing behind.

Bourbon, caramel and raisins on the nose, quite strong. Some chocolate. Molasses and dark fruit. Plum.

Taste is similar to the nose. Bourbon first. Caramel, brown sugar, and toffee. Raisins, plums, and figs. Molasses. A bit of chocolate at the end.

Medium body with crisp carbonation. A bit sticky, almost syrupy. Lingering boozy warmth.

Very nicely done beer from Mothers. Good complex mix of flavors. Bourbon is strong but not overpowering and complements the other aspects.
