Notes: Formerly Old School Oktoberfest

Old School Oktoberfest is a traditional amber lager brewed to celebrate the fall harvest. Extended aging creates a medium bodied beer with a smooth malty flavor and just the faintest touch of hops. Pull up your lederhosen, raise a stein, Ein Prosit!

Pours a brilliant clear amber topped with a moderate frothy white head. Nice and bright.

Aromas of straw, caramel maltiness, grassy hops, and a clove-spiced candied citrus note that seems perhaps a bit out of place. Clean and simple.

Supple maltiness on the palate, smooth and rounded, finishing in a crisp but not sharp hoppy note. A little drying on the finish. Flavors of caramel, grainy bread, and a hint of grassy and floral hop notes. Well-rounded, malty but balanced, clean and drinkable.

Light to medium in body, firm but supple. Sessionable; would go great with brats and kraut.

Pours an effervecent apricot with a siver of cream colored head. Near zero head retention & lacing

S: Breadyness, hay, crackery notes, some mineral notes, just a lovely nose, nice perfumy hop notes

T: Follows the nose, a touch of pears & lemons up front. Dryness, maybe a touch of pineapple as this warms, a bit of white grape. Finishes fruity, grainy with dry-ish hay notes & a kiss of lemon

MF: Medium bodied, firm carbonation, great balance

Super drinkability, a nice Marzen, easily one of the better ones I've had in several years

12oz bottle. Poured out a clear, amber color with ruby highlights and a small, tan head. It smelled of sweet caramel malt and toffee. Nice sweet caramel with hints of roasted malt and a mild bitterness..

Pours a clear, copper color. 1/2 inch head of an off-white color. Good retention and great lacing. Smells of yeast, sweet malt, caramel malt, slight pale malt, hint of hops, and a hint of alcohol. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Fits the style of a Marzen / Oktoberfest. Tastes of sweet malt, pale malt, slight caramel malt, yeast, hint of hops, and slight alcohol. Overall, a decent an example of a Marzen.

served on-tap @ Conrad's Alehouse, Liberty, MO, into a pint glass

Pours a light orange color. Not exactly what I'm used to seeing from a Marzen. Very little head, but that's on the bartender more than anything.

The aroma hits all of the notes that a beer of this style should. It's got a nice, nutty malt background and some green, steely hops to balance it. A clean, malt-forward lager is what you think of when you smell this beer.

And that's what you get. Old School Oktoberfest is among the best U.S. Marzenbiers I've ever had. What's key here is the depth of malt flavor. It's all very nutty -- all of the malt flavors register as nutty -- but it isn't a single note. The nuttiness changes, evolves, from the initial sip through the finish. There's just enough noble hop presence to lend the sweetness some needed cutting edge.

The body is perhaps a touch thicker than I'd prefer for a lager like this, but overall it works well to carry its deep malt flavors. This is a really lovely Marzen. Drink it if you can find it.

this is a well made beer, and a lot of the mothers stuff is, but its a little sweeter than i like in the style, as oktoberfest is a beer i like to make a day of, and so the drier ones play a little better i think in terms of high volume drinking, but the flavors here are well developed and the beer remains in balance. part of it is that i dont think the lager yeast is as flavorful as some, not as obviously old worldy, and not as influential in the finish. as such, i think the malts tend to run on a little longer than in most. definitely a nice caramel malt profile, layers of bran and toffee and toasted warmth, its hearty and there isnt much of a hop profile here to speak of, light bitterness there is all. medium body, light dried apple notes, a hint of maple, and pretty good carbonation. i know these guys a lot more for inventive and strange beers than i do for brewing to style, but they have done a pretty solid job with something more traditional. if you like them extended a little bit by the grain sweetness, this one is for you.
