Deep, dark body; fairly thick and frothy tan head. Rich roasted and charred grain aroma; coffee; mocha. Excellent dark beer flavor; roasted grains with a coffee bitterness; vanilla sweetness; milk chocolate. Heavy body; smooth and oily yet feeling somewhat thin; coffee warmth and bite; dry notes but has an overriding sweetness to the body throughout.

This is a nicely made coffee stout. The smoothness can be attributed to the oats (I'm sure). There is a well-rounded depth and complexity to the flavor. A nice find...

Pours black with two fingers of caramel-colored foam. Aroma is roast, toasty, nutty, earthy malts with a very strong and prominent charring to it. Flavor profile is roasty, toasty, nutty, earthy malts with a heavy and lingering sour berry quality at the back. Possible can damage via Tavour. Mouth feel is medium-thick with a creamy, velvety texture. Overall, meh. It starts off dark and strong, but quickly fades and morphs into a lightly sour char.

Served in a 15.5oz Speigalau tulip from a 16oz can.

Very darknappearance with slight tan head. Aroma is a prominent chocolate with a touch of coffee. The chocolate flavor and aroma are not my favorite and the coffee flavor is also too mild.

L: Soot Black, with a dark caramel head with decent lacing and short retention.

S: Dark roast coffee dominates, I can barely find the chocolate in there.

T: Again this tastes like more coffee than beer, the coffee seems to be good quality but possibly over-roasted. A small touch of sweet milk chocolate.

F: Not very rich or thick, but decent weight. Acrid mouthfeel from the coffee.

O: If this were described as a coffee stout only I would be on board. The chocolate is lost for me, but overall it is a well executed coffee stout I would repeat. The skill of the brewer is still on display here.

From a 16 oz. can into a Willi Becher style glass, this beer pours out like a coffee on the downstream and settles into the glass pitch black. It forms over a finger worth of caramel colored crown.

The nose brings a dry, roasty, fresh coffee bean smell. Beautiful coffee aroma mixing with a layer of chocolate.

The taste brings in a freshly roasted, black coffee. Very roasty coffee and a faint touch of creamer.

The mouthfeel is dry seems a bit on the thinner side and I would’ve liked it a little thicker. The carbonation seems a little low and I would like to see more pop to it.

Overall, the coffee is the main show here. It doesn’t really show many aspects of a stout, but is delightful for a coffee drinker.

Brewed with Klatch coffee and cocoa nibs per Anchorage's Facebook page; can simply reads, "Brewed with coffee and chocolate"

Deep black pour into a nonic pint produced a finger of dark brown foam and the anticipated aromas of rich earthy chocolate and coffee... Continues to the deliver the goods on the sip - and, much to my delight - this is only mildly sweet, like bittersweet chocolate... Super smooth as you'd expect, and full-bodied... Up front, molasses-like notes accompany the cocoa and coffee, but they are quickly paired with a sharp bitter edge that turns ashy, lending some char to dry out the finish...

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours nearly black, appearing nearly opaque black in the glass with a two finger, somewhat fizzy, dark khaki head that dissipates to a thick film with light lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, drip coffee, mild cocoa; coffee dominates. Flavor is dark toasted malt and drip coffee with some malt and coffee char, milk chocolate and a hint of vanilla. Medium bodied with light creaminess. This is one of the more coffee forward stouts I've tasted, dominating even the fairly robust dark malts. The coffee is authentic and pleasant tasting, with a little burnt coffee char note that is hard to separate from the malt toasting, so it fits in fine. Body is not as creamy as I expect from an oat stout, but satisfactory. Great flavors from all the ingredients, but a bit unbalanced towards the coffee for my palate.

Wow. This beer is amazing. Anchorage Brewing's Expel is an Oat Stout graced from heaven with massive chocolate and coffee notes. It's bringing me back to when I tried Hubbard's Cave for the first time. It pours super thick, has good head retention, and smells massively of chocolate. The taste explodes chocolate and coffee, and it's super smooth from the oat malt addition. It's an amazing beer, you should drink immediately upon finding.
