The bourbon barrel notes are great, sweet and boozy with just a bit of an oaky bite. The base beer is also incredibly sweet, molasses, brown sugar, dark fruits, plus hints of vanilla and milk chocolate. I can't say I get a lot of Belgian character here, but I like a lot nonetheless.

A deftly executed Belgian Dark Strong Ale from Anchorage that benefits from its subtle but welcomed barrel influences. It finishes sweet as one would expect based on the description and style, but it's certainly one of the best BSDAs I've had the pleasure of trying.

Pours dark brown. A finger of khaki head appears but doesn't last long. Any foam formation on one of these Anchorage brews is always welcome however.

Nose is dark fruit, burnt brown sugar and molasses, slight oak/wood influence, dark bread or perhaps even a well done pretzel. The Belgians always have that candi sugar sort of thing going on which is prevalent here.

Taste is dark fruit, covered in brown sugar, then burnt with a culinary torch. Akin to Creme Brulee. Then what follows is some oak and the malt, which really drives the well done pretzel from a NYC pretzel cart flavor. The finish is nice. A lot of burnt flavors, but not bitter. The sweetness of it all really wraps up quite nicely. They mesh surprisingly well.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation. A little flat feeling. Nothing really spectacular here. I would've given this a 3.75, but the fact that it's not cloying is nice so it gets a 4 here.

Overall, this is kind of underrated. Knowing this is Anchorage, the bar is high, but I also didn't expect the same wow factors as their huge stouts. This is subtle and contemplative. Very respectful. Quiet, understated. Something that I have been pleasantly surprised by even despite my expectations.

The nose is a beautiful bouquet of stewed raisin, rich molasses, and a hint of Belgian esters. The palate pushes forward with more of the same; very sweet, dark fruit that is balanced perfectly by mildly boozy oak barrel that finishes smooth & warm.

Look: It pours very dark brown with a light brown head. It has moderate head retention.

Smell: It has strong caramel aromas with dark fruits that feature cherries and raisins. It addition there are some bourbon notes with slight wood and brown sugar.

Taste: There are cherry and raisin flavors up front with some toffee and caramel. There are light bourbon notes with very low wood.

Feel: It has a very silky smooth texture with slight alcohol warming that could sneak up on you if you didn't know the ABV of the beer.

Overall, a great complex blend of flavors and aromas.

Deep, dark body, nearly black in appearance; fairly thin head, lasting, light tan in color. Rich and moderately sweet aroma; cocoa and milk chocolate with a slight whiskey note. Beautifully balanced yet intense flavor; sweet chocolate and cocoa; candi sugar and anise; bourbon barrel wood; whiskey. Heavy body; soft and velvety; predominantly sweet yet offset with some nice alcohol heat.

This is an incredibly tasty barrel-aged dark ale. There is a fine sweet and oily feel to the beer that accentuates the milk chocolate sweetness with the sublime bourbon barrel aging. Complex yet balanced, dense and refined.

Poured at 48 °F; no bottling date noted.

Gutted. Another high-falutin high-priced small-format red-waxed beer from Anchorage. If they hadn’t been so consistently excellent I wouldn’t shell out, but. 375ML bottle.

The pour is dark black & appears borderline flat. The nose is heavy bourbon filtered through heavy malts & brown sugar.

Gutted brings all the bourbon. Bourbon slap up front that submerges most everything else. Pattering in the background is brown sugar, deep rich malts, sun-dried cherries, anise, & a final thrust of booziness. Tastes like more than 10% due to the bourbon hit. No discernable Belgian yeast.

An interesting beer for sure, but I’d have liked more of the Belgian qualities to shine through. As is, a very good bourbon heavy-hitter.

Pours dark with minimal tan lacing. Smells of dark sweet fruit, slight barrel presence on the back end. Taste is the same-tart and sweet dark fruit flavors, but I’m getting very little barrel other than a hint of wood conveyed in a vanilla flavor. Medium to big bodied, with just a hint of thick oiliness, and the barrel asserts itself here the most, as there is a strong boozy presence. Pretty good.

Lighter black opaque body with a brown head. Aromas of the complete barrel, toffee, brown sugar, lush dark malt, and date. Taste also great barrel, the bourbon just sings up front, very rich malt work and toffee, traditional dark ale flavors pull through in last third of the sip with dark fruit galore. Feel is lush, warm with edges of booze, oak felt but not huge driver, malty and rich. The life loved it.

Pours deep black with a thin head of foam. Aroma is immediately boozy oak, dark cherries and dark malt. Taste is mostly forward, hitting on sweet, boozy, oak, dark cherry and a hint of chocolate notes. Very intense and hits hard at first. Medium bodied and doesn't hold back. A nice beer.

375 mL bottle. Very dark brown with a deep brown head. Smells of bourbon, lots of dark fruit, roasted malt, brown sugar. Tastes of sweet brown sugar, bourbon, dark fruit, a little chocolate. Heavy and sweet. It has the dark fruit components of a Belgian dark, but it's way sweeter and nowhere near as dry.
