Anchorage Brewing "Love Buzz Saison"
750 ml bottle, corked and caged
Batch #1, August 2011
$13.59 @ State Line Liquors, Elkton, MD

Appearance: Hazy peach colored body beneath a creamy head of off-white foam. Very good head retention; very nice lacing.

Aroma: Bold aroma. Quite complex. Strawberry, cherry, pear, apple, grape, orange, pineapple and chalky citrus rind. Brettanomyces tang and fruitiness! Subtle spice almost like cedar. Floral. Hints of grassiness.

Taste: As expected, the flavor follows the aroma. It's surprisingly citrusy, displaying a note of lemon that I didn't pick up in the aroma. And there's a bit of spice to it that's particularly clear in the drying finish (coriander, perhaps a dash of pepper). The Brett is clearly present, but not overdone amidst so much citrus. It's well-rounded and balanced with fruit and Brett upfront, followed by a passing hit of sweetness that's then eclipsed by citrus, and then followed by drying notes of floral, chalk, oak, and spice.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, creamy and smooth. Velvety almost.

Overall: It's quite complex in its aroma, but it's not overly done in its flavor... there's a lot to deal with there to be sure, but it's still quite drinkable - there's nothing that holds it back. The bitterness is perfectly balanced alongside the spice/oak and citrus/floral notes, and that's the pivotal point here; everything else just spins around it.

Impressive. Unique. Well worth seeking out, especially for fans of the style.

anchorage has to have one of the best beer portfolios out there. they are all so clever and well made, and so unique too. love buzz is a real treat for me. the peppercorns are there in the nose, and blend in seamlessly with the spice of the saison yeast in the taste. the orange peel does the same thing with the citra hops, marrying equally and synergistic to the max, with the orange adding some bitter just like the hops do, and the hops adding the citrus thing to the nose. the yeast complexion is amazing, mouthwatering, its dry but wet too, its bretty and funky and odd, but still farmy and familiar, like a nap in a hay loft. hard to tell if its the red wine barrel or the rose hip giving it a perfume floral thing before the finish, but the cherry notes of the wine barrel bring it back to earth. oak and funk, fruity and dry, its as complex as any beer out there, and just as well made too. i love all of the anchorage beers, but this one may well be my favorite. what an extraordinary specimen. Pinot noir barreling as obvious here as it is anywhere, and this ages with the best of them

Pours a golden hazy body. Nice tight lacy off white head.

The citrus hops come through nicely in the aroma. Lemongrass sour apples from the Belgain yeast. A bit of orange tropical fruitiness. A bit of pepper and a touch of the oak.

Lemon twang fades quickly into a sweet tropical citrus a bit of the funk, but not much and very subtle notes of vanilla. There is a nice depth of flavors here. Get a bit of spiciness here and there as well. Very complex and enjoyable brew.

The body is light and full of carbonation. A good amount of complexity in the flavors. Anchorage is really hitting it out of the park. I can't wait to see more from these guys.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had an orange color and a thick, cloudy consistency. There was an inch and a half of rocky, long-lasting head. Very good lacing.

S: A surprisingly sweet smell (almost like bubblegum), with a lot of fruit, malt, spices and a vinous quality.

T: Tasted of fruit (orange), spices (cloves), malt, and that vinous quality. There was a tinge of that barnyard funk, but it wasn't as omnipresent as with other saisons. A vibrant, complex and tasty beer.

M: A well-carobonated beer with a slightly slick finish. Medium-bodied.

O: Not quite a classic saison, but definitely well made and flavorful.

Poured into a tulip glass. Tight white head forms over a dark orange body, cloudy from the yeast. The carbonation is very active and it sizzles and pops during the pour. Average retention and slight bits of lacing left on the glass.

Complex with citrus, hay, touches of Belgian spice and barnyard. I get lemon and grapefruit, apples and papaya on the front with a mesh of Belgian anise and oak. Funk comes in with a slight musty hay and ascorbic acid, vitamin quality.

Toasted grain with lemon peel, apple juice, Pinot Noir and hibiscus tea up front that evolves with coriander, anise, peppercorn, oak, more lemon zest and grassy noble hops. Hop, grass and pine bitterness carries into the finish with some earthy barnyard, vinegar, rose hips and lemon which lightens up the beer quite a bit and finished with a nice zip across the palate.

Medium to light body weighted down by the yeast. Prickly carbonation with brings out the nuances in the flavor.

Terrific beer and my first from Anchorage, I really can taste the bright orange peel and rose hips in this which leads to a bright and exciting saison. The brett, pinot barrels and citra all play a part as well and I will seek out their other brews.

A bottle into two tulip glasses with extra to spare in a regular glass.

Love Buzz looks lovely with a nice bright golden bordering on yellow hue when up to the light. Has a lemonade look to it except for the massive thick inch of ivory shaded foam on top leaving blotches.

Smell is pretty pungent and im hit with hops off the bat, probably citra as im getting mad tropics with mango. Farmhouse Belgian yeast with some hay and a spike of brett for good measure. Not overly bretted ala Bullfrog Undead Ed. A faint cracker like breadiness from the yeast.

Taste is great, not out of this world but in the right direction. Brett, citrus tastes, saison farm twang. As with the Bitter Monk, I only picked up a trace amount of the barrel type used. I get the faint oak but no pinot character.

Feel bordering on medium but is on the lighter side. This just goes down all to easy. The carb is pretty tight while not taking over the tounge, this beer is certainly alive. A nice bretty aftertaste that lingers a bit.

This is impressive, a bit less in boldness and taste than the Bitter Monk, but I found this to be the more drinkable one out of the two. A whole bottle was child's play. Now I just need somebody to get a taste of the new wit, cause I ain't buying that one.

batch 1 aug 2011

pours cloudy golden orange with a big pillowy chunky off white head that had good retention and left rings of lacing down the glass

smell - while not that strong it is very intoxicating and i just could not get enough - fruity bready malt and oh that brett funk

taste was good but it did not live up to the nose - sweet bready fruit and the sour brett - it did have a bad metallic aftertaste on just a few sips which were cringe worthy

mouthfeel was a medium body with good carbonation - very smooth and creamy

overall - this beer just did not pop for me - the high price tag
and a few bad sips with off flavors did not help either
