Poured into a tulip, the appearance was a jet black color with an off white to tan foamy head. Delicate foamy lace. The aroma started off with some sweet dark and milk chocolate, dried dark fruits, balanced vinous quality, somewhat tart/sour. The flavor blends the vinous sour to the chocolate sweetness. Some barrel dried woodiness and the dark fruits showing their tart qualities, almost more like blackberry if anything. Leans to the chocolate sweet side with the sour making a decent effort in the aftertaste and finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a fair sessionability about it. Sour vinous qualities seem to just balance and don’t really add any harshness or distract from the feel. Actually, because of that, it just seems to balance very appropriately. Overall, very nice American wild ale with all of the dark components coming across super nice. Definitely worth coming back to in the colder months.

Pours a dark black with a two finger fluffy tan head that disappates quickly. Aroma is roast malt, dark fruit, dark chocolate, slight tartness/sour, and a definite red wine vinous character. Taste follows with big notes of red wine and tartness up front, followed by dark roasted malts and dark chocolate, oak, very slight whiskey notes, and a funky earthiness on the finish. Mouthfeel is medium and oily, with enough crisp carbonation to keep it balanced. Almost gose/stout hybrid like. Overall, this is a very good beer, super complex with layers of flavor that evolve as you drink and the beer warms.

Apr 2016 batch

A: Poured into a Duvel tulip to a black beer topped by a finger and a half of dense tan head that retains well and leaves decent lacing
S: Smells of roastyness with some nice sour notes and a little funk. Light coffee and chocolate as well
T: Taste is tartness, oak, funk, some roasty notes, fudge and coffee. Slight sour cherry as well. Swallow is sour cherry and leather with more oak, funk and roasted coffee.
M: This beer has a moderate amount of body with a creamy mouthfeel. Carbonation is soft but adequate and the beer has a dry finish.
O: Overall this is a really nice beer. It is complex and flavorful with a pleasing amount of tartness. It reminds me of a very tame Tart of Darkness. If you like sour dark beers this is one to get your hands on.

750ml corked and caged bottle poured into tulip 9/9/16

A the darkest cola liquid, thumbs width of dark foam quickly falls to a thin film leaving lots of spider web lace even on the side I'm drinking out of

S wet wood, musty wine barrel but not getting the whiskey, strawberry and sour cherries, sugar coated raisins, cocoa powder, cold coffee, maybe some sour plums, plenty gong on

T more sour fruit and some cola added to the mix but other then that it mimics the nose fairly well, about what I expected after smelling it

M comes out a little thin in the mouth but the bubbles fluff it up but then it flattens out in a hurry, sour cherry finish

O drinks a little easy for 8.5% so that says something, dark sours are often odd and this ones no exception but it somehow all pulls together but I would like to see more whisky barrel

An odd brew but it grew on me as I got in to it, that being said I don't think I'd pull the trigger again for a second crack considering the price tag

750ml, caged and corked bottle - lots of typical nasties in this one, but the Pinot Noir barrel certainly intrigues me. Wait, that's a FISH on the label?

This beer pours a pretty solid black, with very spare red cola edges, and one finger of puffy, finely foamy, and somewhat fizzy brown head, which leaves a bit of windswept rocky remote island profile lace around the glass as it quickly blows off.

It smells of edgy Brett and lactic sourness, bready and lightly roasted caramel malt, muddled dark orchard fruit (maybe some prunes and figs), some dank red wine barrel mustiness, a twinge of cocoa powder, maybe some ephemeral coffee notes, and a hint of emerging estery citrus rind. The taste is grainy and bready caramel malt, a minor earthy nuttiness, sour dark fruit (cherries, red grapes, and dates), musty old socks, an increasing vinous barrel woodiness, some free-agent ashiness, a bit of leathery tobacco, very dry chocolate, and some coffee that's been sitting on the stove for way too long.

The carbonation is adequately active in its generally structural frothiness, the body a decent medium weight, and so-so smooth, as the funk, char, and sourness really don't engender much hope at this juncture, yeah?. It finishes off-dry, the still ethereally smoked malt and varied wine-led fruitiness easily contending with any lingering souring agents.

Overall, this is another brew from Anchorage that took its time to grow on me - the sourness eventually dovetailing into the heady base brown ale, all under the auspices of that sexy Pinot red wine barrel essence. Other props go to the seamlessly integrated 17-proof booze, which I'm sure I'll be encountering soon enough.
