This place differs from other bars because they brew their own stuff, and it's pretty damn good. Shanghai Brewery is a restaurant/bar/micro-brewery that you would find outside of China. The atmosphere is very relaxed and is a nice place to relax, gets some grub, and a few beers.

This place stands out because of it's western style and is designed as such. I immediately felt comfortable upon walking inside (although there is also outdoor seating). Everything is nice and clean inside, as expected of a place that a lot of expats visit on a daily basis.

The reason why I voted "selection" so highly was because Shanghai Brewery's selection is different and unique in China. As a micro-brewery, they have several selections that are pretty good and stay true to the style. This kind of selection is hard to find anywhere else in China, so I'd recommend giving their beers a try.

Their food selection is also not bad, with a lot of stuff being standard bar food. If you check their website there are specials throughout the week (like the 2 for 1 burger special I ordered), but their menu encompasses much more than those specials. The burgers my girlfriend and I got were both very delicious.

Prices are very reasonable for what you're expecting, especially if you go in for a special. Total bill is comparable to what I would pay in an American chain restaurant.

Overall, Shanghai Brewery is a nice place to go to if you're trying eat something other than Chinese food. With a decent food and beer selection, nice staff, and good atmosphere, it's become one of my favorite places in Shanghai.

Their IPA can stand up against any IPA! Wonderfully smooth with great hops. Their Porter was not as good, but pretty descent. Outdoor seating. Salads were fabulous and good size with a good price.

THis review is for the place on Donghu Rd, as the restaurant on Hongmei Rd was terrible, incredibly terrible.

Classy 20s style feel, swinging 20s, the old style decor, to font on the menus, and an array of fake half barrels sticking out of the wall, darker decent lighting.

10 taps, 6 beers and two ciders, not sure what the other two taps are. Decent beers, but they are all served in hefe style glasses for some reason. Interesting mixed drinks too. Somehow they even have Rittenhouse rye 100 and haymans sloe berry gin and even cachaca 151.

Friendly staff but don't seem super knowledgeable. Didn't get any food. American pop music. Most Prices average for Shanghai, which is pricier than normal, but beers are 25rmb each which is the same price as juice so pretty cheap for that at least (about $4). No abv listed for any if their beers.

Bathroom is interesting, 1 room combined sexes with 4 separate mini rooms each with a urinal and toilet.

Free WiFi, password is "drinkbeer".

Setting is on a pleasant (but touristy) pedestrian street between Hongmei Rd. and Hongxu Rd.

There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating.

I sat at the bar to have a beer (no food), so the service was very attentive.

They do have a good selection of their own and guest taps, although this is the second time I've been to one of their locations and they have not had the full list of their own beers either time.

It is a solid brewpub in Shanghai - I don't want to discourage their success!

As everyone knows there are few microbreweries in Shanghai and in China generally. So Shanghai Brewery is a welcome addition. It is one of the only authentic microbreweries in China. Why is China so slow to catch on? Who knows?

The variety of brews at Shanghai Brewery is to be commended. They have 6 or 7 microbrews from a light pils lager to a hoppy IPA. Most bars around cater to the "lite beer" audience, which is the main consumer in China. But Brewery is now suppying the laowai thirsty masses with great alternatives to the usual venues' standard beers. I go for the Stout and the Pale Ale.

The venue itself is good. Pretty spacious. The prices are not too high. And decent food.
