Very Good
Golden Gate GoseGolden Gate Gose
Notes: Our Golden Gate Gose is inspired by the classic wheat beer hailing from Leipzig, Germany. Traditionally brewed with salt and coriander, our tart California-inspried version is brewed with San Francisco Bay sea salt, lemon verbena from Eatwell Farm in Dixon, and coriander grown and dried especially for us by Dirty Girl Produce in Santa Cruz, California. Fermented with our house saison yeast, this delicate and tart beer is a perfect summer refresher. Pair with fresh seafood and sunshine.

Pale yellow colored beer with a massive white colored head.

Smells of soda cracker and fruity sourness and herbal noble hop. Mild coriander scent. Scent is slightly soapy.

Starts out mildly tart and salty with a soda cracker after taste. Gets a little more tart as you drink it. High carbonation levels. Salt and lemon flavors dominate. This would be a great chaser for a tequila shot.

Mouthfeel is good and fairly light as per the beer style.

Overall a spot on for the style Gose. A good beer to reference what Gose is supposed to taste like.

BOTTLE: 22 fl oz brown glass with appealing label art and a branded pry-off pressure cap acquired I think in a trade? I can't remember the trade partner; all apologies.

5% ABV. Reviewed live as a gose per the label. Served cold into a tulip and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: Four fingers wide. White colour. Decent creaminess and thickness. Good retention - about 6 minutes. No lacing sticks to the sides of the glass as the head recedes.

BODY: Clear pale copper of excellent vibrance. No yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible; it's surprisingly clean and clear for a gose - which should be hazy and unfiltered.

Appears well-carbonated. Overall, it's a nice looking American sour but appears too filtered for a gose.

AROMA: Wheat, fruity zest, indistinct fruit - maybe apricots, lemon, coriander, floral and fruity hop notes, pale malts, some tartness, light (i.e. 2/10 in terms of intensity) sourness, some bready malts, clove, Belgian spiciness, and faint sea salt. There's some graininess in there too. And lime. The sweetness/sourness balance seems perfect.

No alcohol or off-notes are detectable.

It's a pleasant aroma of above average strength. Surprisingly fresh.

TASTE: A delightful balance of fruity notes (comprised of both actual lime and lemon citrus zest as well as hoppy fruit notes like apricot), neutral pale malts & wheat, and subtle tartness & sourness. Sourness is mild but apt for the flavour profile - about a 3/10 in intensity, with some complementary sea salt and coriander. It's impeccably put together, and I find it complex for a gose, with ample subtlety. Green ripe apple.

Fresh and enjoyable, with good depth of flavour. Average flavour duration and intensity.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, medium-bodied, aptly thick, slightly overcarbonated, refreshing, juicy, and lightly smacky on the palate.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough, or scratchy on the palate.

OVERALL: Extremely drinkable; I'll easily down my glass and could go for a second bottle. I'd definitely nab another bottle of this if I saw it in-stores, but I don't know that I'd go out of my way to seek it out. It's a wonderful gose and will impress the discerning drinker. Easily one of (if not the) best beers in the style I've had. The spiciness is perfect. Really well-executed. I definitely prefer this to Westbrook's offering.

Bottle shared by Dave. Thanks man.

The beer is a hazy sunset yellowish orange with a thin layer of head, consisting of broken bubbles and noticeable effervescence. The aroma offers tangerine, assorted tangy citrus, wheat, light sea salt. A touch of coriander. Nice flavor. Very fruit forward. Zesty with a tart finish. Enjoyable.

Poured from 750 mL bottle into tulip.
A: Pours a clear golden yellow with moderate carbonation producing a 2 inch bubbly white head. Good retention.
S: Mild mineral funk, sweet herbal grass (coriander and lemon verbena), barnyard mustiness, white pepper, and salt. Nicely complex.
T: Peach, soft mineral funk, herbal notes (coriander, mint, and lemon verbena), salt, and white pepper. Note quite up to the aroma and the salt note was a detractor for me.
M: Light body. Soft and lightly sweet. Salty with an herbal astringency. Mild tart note too.
D: An interesting take on the style. Not the best example for my tastes (salty). I do like the overall construction of the brew.

A: Pours a crystal clear medium yellow in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising quickly from the bottom of the glass and faint golden yellow highlights. The beer has a finger tall foamy white head that slowly reduces to a large patch of medium thick film covering the entire surface of the beer and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Slightly heavier than light aromas of slightly sour/funky wheat with a light aroma of citrus/lemon and hints of briny salt. Just a hint of coriander spice.

T: Upfront there is a moderate flavor of slightly sour wheat malts with a light amount of funkiness and light lingering tartness. That is followed by slightly stronger than light flavors of lemon citrus and coriander spice. Light flavors of briny salt towards the finish.

M: Light bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Light amounts of acidic prickliness are present.

O: Easy to drink, refreshing, and enjoyable though a touch saltier than some of the others in the style. Alcohol is well hidden and I enjoyed the touch of funkiness to this one. Definitely worth grabbing and I could easily have a couple of these in a session.
