much like their farmers reserve blackberry, this beer could have been a little more up front with the fruit, but the subtlety of the special ingredient makes the other intricacies of an incredible wild ale stand out that much more. stained bright red like the label, behind a pale yellow wheat beer. cloudy and heady, with aromas of permanent marker and freeze dried strawberries for astronauts. lots of sourness too, more than farmers reserve, and frankly rather intense in that regard. lactic sourness turns to a citric lemony funk, very cool with the fruit, which may otherwise be real sweet. wheat malt base is plenty big, there is a bottom end and a full creamy body to this. well carbonated too. i wish the strawberry was a little more vibrant. it hinges on fresh, but comes across dried to me, like a strawberry cereal. hard to execute with this fruit though, and this is definitely one of the better takes on it out there. the marker thing is odd, astringent, and not a product of fusel alcohols or the like, not of high fermentation temperatures, or anything i can explain with my limited knowledge of the process. its almost like a pint thiner, a caustic or something, just flashing in for a second in mid palate and again in the finish. not off putting, almost flattering to the sweet fruit, but distracting nevertheless. we need more almanac in the state, these beers are incredible taken on the whole. beers like this don't need to be picked apart and analyzed, its an experience as a package deal, and its one id like to have again many times over.

Poured from the 375mL bottle into a mini-snifter.

A thin, wispy and fizzy head is produced from the pour but it quickly dissipates. What remains is a slightly hazy orange, ruby red and dark brown body. It's got the appearance of maybe guava juice, but hell, I haven't drank that stuff in ages. 4

Mostly sourness and tartness hit my nose, but there's certainly a fruit element to these aromas. The strawberry is there if I try hard enough to find it, but it's faint. 3.5

Strawberry is the last thing you'll taste with this, as a fresh, tart strawberry flavor hits and lingers. Up front it's more heavy on the funk, almost gueuze-like with that heavy malt/yeast taste and sensation. As the beer warms, the fruit becomes more pronounced throughout and plays a good foil to the funk. 4.25

I'd almost say this drinks lightly, but there's a bubbly carbonation like soda followed by the dry, mouth puckering tartness. I smack my lips a few times with each sip. 4.25

This improved mightily with some warming up. Tart fruity flavors abound and the funkiness, while initially quite assertive, takes a back seat and lets the strawberry shine.
