Notes: This beer is inspired by the long and hot summer days in the San Joaquin Valley—the fertile basin that yields much of California’s bountiful produce. This tart blond ale was brewed with Rainier and Bing cherries from Bella Viva Orchards and fermented with our house sour culture and aged for many months in used wine barrels to create a tart, cherry-kissed wild ale.

Almanac's Cerise Sour Blond, blond ale brewed with cherries (Ranier and Bing) and aged in wine barrels. 7% ABV.

A: About half a finger of head, but it dissipates so quickly to nothing that it's hard to say for sure. No lacing. Decent sheeting. A lot of color variance to this one. Orangeade orange along the top and near the bottom. Gradients to a red-orange in the center. Very foggy looking white, with a yellowish tinge, in the dimple.

S: Funky, musty cherry aroma with a lot of sourness up front. Slight peach skin. I do smell both the more stone fruity aroma of Ranier cherry in with the more acidic cherry aroma. Faint dry oak. Very faint lemony scent.

T/MF: Hmm. More sharp and bright lemony tartness up front that shift into a more lime note, with just a touch of the lime peel bitterness. A hint of peach skin at the very front. Most of the acidity is very short, leaving a fairly clean taste on the tongue, with just a touch of acidity along with the Ranier cherry left to ride out the finish, soft and decently long. Some of the initial acidity splashes onto the sides of the tongue and holds there a little more than down the center. Just a touch of carbonation of the palate.

Not quite what I was expecting, but quite good, all the same.

Poured from a 375mL bottle, into a Belgian tulip glass.

A: The beer is hazy reddish yellow in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high beige head that quickly died down, leaving large wispy laces of bubbles covering the surface, a collar around the edge, and bits of lacing down the sides.
S: Light to moderate aromas of sourness are present in the nose along with slight hints of cherries. The cherries become a little stronger as the beer warms up.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste is mostly sour and has some notes of tart cherries.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and a little tart on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is quite quaffable for a wild ale because it isn't overly tart or sour. It wasn't nearly as complex as some of the best wild ales, but was enjoyable to drink.

Bottled July 2014.

Pours a murky orange-brown with a foamy tan head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is slightly sour with malt, cherry, cherry juice, and white wine aromas. Taste is much the same with sour cherry, cherry juice, white wine, and wood flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp and dry mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty, but there is a slightly better cherry presence in the aroma.

i really like all of the stuff almanac makes, but this may be the least impressive of the lot. i was expecting bold cherry because their other fruited beers are so robust, but the cherries in this are almost weak, not adding a whole lot to the beer. the base sour blonde is obviously excellent, almanac has that part dialed in, but i keep waiting for the fruit to pop and it never does. the color has a faded reddish hue, cloudy and soft looking, but it never really develops with the cherries. its not sweet either, which is a plus, but dont exxpect this to be kriek-like in nature, its not even close. its a pale sour beer that uses the fruit just as an accent. well made but not as unique as their other stuff.

Tart sour cherry with a solid starting head and a diminishing carb level. Nice sourness and good cherry notes. Really tart though and a tad boozy.
