Brewed by:
Almanac Beer Co.
California, United States

Style: American Wild Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Citra Sour is our very first single-hopped sour release. As the name suggests, Citra hops lend citrusy, fruity flavors and aromas, leaning toward grapefruit or even melon and passionfruit. It’s a popular hop in blends behind big West Coast IPAs, but bold enough to shine solo.

These fruity aromas blend harmoniously with our tart, earthy sour blonde ale, creating a beer that simultaneously contradicts and compliments itself. Pairs best with summery salads and sense of adventure.

From a 375 ml bottle (bottled July 2015) to a tulip.

A-The beer is hazy and light in color; straw with hints of rust or brown. The head is short and white, and it leaves no lacing on the glass. I can see a few fine bubbles of carbonation in there.

S-The aroma is dominated by a musty, tart citrus flavor. Lots of lemon with a little bit of wild funk. Reminiscent of other Almanac sours, but this showcases the citra hops nicely. There isn't a ton of oak in there, but the beer is vinous enough to remind me of a sauvignon blanc wine.

T-The taste is more sour than I thought it would be based on the smell. Acidity pulls at my glands with each sip. The lemony hop notes double down on the tartness. Flavors include white wine, lemon, hints of mandarin orange, and a pale malt base.

M-The body is medium in heft. Carbonation is moderate and the beer feels slightly slick on the palate. A nice drinking beer.

O-This is a good sour beer that really puts the hop variety, citra in this case, up front and center. The result is lots of lemon and a lightly tropical note that mixes up an otherwise standard wild golden ale. This is a good beer, but I don't know that I would buy it again at the price point.

Pours bright gold with cloudy haze. 2+ finger white head is rather effervescent. Head dissipates slowly leaving behind a small amount of lacing.

Bright citrus aroma. Lemon and orange. Hop notes combined with juice notes. Chardonnay grapes, earth, and a bit of funk.

Citrus-y on the tongue. Lemon first and quite prominent. Mild hop bite. Grapefruit. Lactic acid. Wine barrel, oak and grape.

Moderate body with crisp carbonation. Tart on the tongue but not truly sour. Lingering citrus and wine notes.

Very nice sour with good combo of citrus and barrel.

Apricot flesh colored body, hazy. Not much lacing. Smell is funky, citrus is faint. Taste starts with a bit of sour citrus then giving way to sour, hops are present. Mouthfeel is light. Pair with goat cheese salads, cheese, charcuterie.

A hazy straw color with a minimal white head. Beer is a great combination as the initial taste is the funky Brett immediately followed by the citrus of the Citra hops. The finish is dry.

Straw yellow in color with a moderate haziness. There's a fingernail of eggshell white on top. Light lacing is present. The aroma is a blend of citrus hops and tart Brett. The flavor is a nice interplay of the bitter citrus hops and the tart Brett. It actually ends up being fairly mellow and very well balanced. The mouth is very dry and delicate.

A- Opaque peachy, orangey, yellow. Few small, light, and airy bubbles around the edges
S- I would have guesses a super juicy IPA. Grapefruit, citrus peal, a bit of a sweet/sour hint
T- Definitely got a bit of sweet and sour going on. I get lots of grapefruit body. A bit tart up front, followed by wave of sweet, finished nicely with sour. I wish it lingered a bit more on the tongue.
F- Crisp and light
O- Didn't know what to expect. Nose is much like a great IPA, but taste is like a really approachable but delicious sour. Wish I had more

Hazy yellow color with white head. Aroma has lemony tartness and citrusy hops. Taste is also tart and lemony with some citrusy and slightly dank hops on top. Slightly bitter on the finish. Medium body and carbonation, quite dry aftertaste. A nice hoppy sour, just not as special as I expected.

Pours a slightly hazy and dull golden orange with a thin but lively layer of active carbonation.

Citrus, acidity, and slightly astringent.

Flavor comes off very mild, the acidity is lesser in flavor and puts some life into an otherwise rather dull citrusy and subtle hop character that comes with this beer.

Light-bodied, medium-heavy carbonation, light, tart, refreshing.

Overall, while this had potential, I was left a little disappointed with the lackluster of this brew.

Poured into a tulip, the appearance was a nice looking hazy blonde color with no head or lace.
The aroma had the citra hops up front - sweet, tart, bitter and sour flowing into some light grassy notes and ending up bringing about some lemon sweet pulp. Light grapefruit rind, pine and vinous qualities came out faintly too.
The flavor was a nice blend of sour to tart to bitter and ended up grasping a little sweetness in the back. Some trickle of pine, vinous and herbal qualities came in subtly. Aftertaste was mainly the citrus/grapefruit to piney and vinous sweet characters.
The mouthfeel was almost medium bodied, perhaps sat just a touch under with a wannabe sessionable quality about it. The sour harshness wants to create some pucker, but honestly, it's quite tame. Carbonation felt a bit under, but wasn't bothersome to me, I just accepted it. ABV did feel appropriate. Finish was almost sticky, slightly absorbing to the dry piney effects.
Overall, really nice citra hopped sour ale well worthy of coming back to.

Pours hazy yellow with a thick and pillowy pure white head.

Nose is hugely assertive lemon pine hops.

Mouth feel is bold lemon/lime sour with a nice carbonation and balance. Lemon pucker factor is nice and mouth feel is big and bold

Flavor profile is assertive lemon, almost simplistic in flavor but inviting, clean, fresh and pleasing.

Finish is a nice bitter, tart citrus.
