Style: American Wild Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.20%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Farmer’s Reserve Grand Cru is an ode to our favorite aromatic white wines. We combined California-grown Muscat Blanc grapes with an imperial version of our Farmer’s Reserve sour blonde base and aged them for over a year in French oak barrels.

The result is a deeply fragrant hybrid that captures the Northern California terroir and seamlessly melds the complex tartness of a Belgian-inspired sour ale with the sun-ripened boldness of white wine grapes. Serve this very limited release alongside fresh, raw oysters and pair with celebratory toasts.

this has aged really well, and it was a treat to get to drink this at the almanac taproom, i really was impressed by this, and while these guys have used white wine grapes quite a lot in their portfolio of beers, this is arguably the best of them. to me, muscat grapes are so distinct, sweet like the wine they most commonly yield, with soft notes of green apple, green pear, and golden raisin, i always can smell them when they are in beer, and they are obvious to me again here, but they are winey too this time, sweet and sharp, brightly acidic, enhanced by the alcohol and bacterial sour presence alike, my mouth waters to take the first sip. muscat drips in the flavor too, as fruity as it is winey though, with a lot of oak and tannins, but also a refined and elegant sweetness. pear and light floral character emerge in the acidity, less grainy than anticipated for its strength too, this still has a lighter feel, and is only a little cerealy. increasing sourness as it finishes, softened by the oak, no sign of oxidation or staleness at all, this just tastes really mature to me. delicious beer, ambitious and super well executed. i was so glad to have visited their spot, it gave me a new respect for their beers after a number of mid level bottles that ive recently had. this was killer, as good as anything theyve made in my experience! great use of these distinct grapes.

Think I had this one at the Bistro's barrel aged festival. Glad I got to catch it there, stuff seems prohibitively expensive in the wild (on shelves). Pours a light viscosity and yellow and golden color with a thin 1/5" white head on it. Mildly funky lemon notes in the aroma.

The taste is a lot more wine forward than expected, a wine like abv is perceptible, white wine grape must and humidity is present. Light oak in the french vein. Could use a little more dryness to it, usually french oak allows this easily, too slick. Some acidity and white pepper like notes present throughout the mouthfeel. Is more acidic than sour.

While it isn't a bad beer by any stretch of the imagination, it also isn't anywhere the realm of how good a beer needs to be for me to drop $30 on it. Neat to try 4 oz of, but I can't see dropping the coinage on something like this.

Yellow golden color with a thin fluffy head with short retention.
Controlled funky aroma with notes of horse sweat, Chardonnay wine, malt sweetness, earth and lemon tart.
Intense flavor with notes of lactic acid, boxed orange juice, Chardonnay wine, nutmeg, white pepper, oak, white grapes, lime and leather. Dry and quite acid aftertaste.
Light towards medium body with appropriate carbonation. 10.2%abv is relatively well hidden.
Beer with intense vinous, tart and spicy notes with a good funky going on. Chardonnay beer.

750ml capped bottle served in a large snifter. Don't remember where I got it. Bottled Autumn 2015.

Pours a bright clear light golden color with a large head that fades to nothing very fast, and a lot of active carbonation. Smell is earthy, spicy, lemon-tart. Funk, too.

Taste is lemon and peach tart with a bit of the spiciness and funkiness mixed in there. Has a strong green grape characteristic as well. It might be a little bit boozy. Altogether, I think it's pretty tasty.

Mouthfeel is very dry and medium weight. Overall, I like this beer.

Pours hay, light gold in color. Loads of white grape aromas, the strongest white grape aroma so have experienced in a beer. Chardonnay barrel, mild sour lacto aromas, great balance in the nose. Taste follows the nose, loads of white grape, Chardonnay incredible balance. Mildly dry finish. Lightly sour and refreshing.
