Notes:
This special tropical ale is brewed in celebration of San Francisco City Beer Store’s 10th Anniversary. Inspired by their adorable Platypus mascot, this equatorial sour blonde ale is aged in used wine barrels and oak foeders with an array of tropical fruits. We selected barrels with fruit-forward characters, and amplified those notes with the addition of kiwi, mango, lime and passion fruit. We tied the whole blend together with the addition of aromatic Galaxy hops from New Zealand. The finished beer is a tropical explosion, worthy of our duck-billed inspiration.

You know what? This one is just solid. Like a Baskin Robbins ice cream cake on your 8th birthday, this one does the trick nice n good. Does it blow you away like when a Power Ranger showed up to your 7th birthday? Maybe not. But this Platypus still is not to be reckoned with. Light, fruity, hoppy n smooth.

This was poured into a tulip. The appearance was a glossy grapefruit juice looking color with a quickly dissipating white head. No lacing. The smell started off with some sticky sweet tropical fruity mango, like and kiwi. Sweet then sour. Sly tartness. Subtle vinous-ness. The flavor takes all of the previously mentioned aromas and combines to a nice blend between the sour, the tart, and the sweet. Follows through on the aftertaste and rides into the finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a decent sessionability about it. Carbonation hits appropriately allowing enough tartness and sourness to hit with the right amount of harshness on my tongue. Overall, another nicely done American Wild ale by Almanac, I would have again.

375 ml bottle into a tulip glass. Bottled Spring 2016, had 1/17/17.
Pours a bright and clear pale yellow- more cloudy on the second pour, with a one inch, quickly dissipating head and some foamy lacing. Smells of wine, lime, yeast, some mango, a little oak, light vanilla. A tart aroma with a little funk, a hint of mint. The taste is malt, yeast, wine, lime, mango, lemon, a little oak, some funk, the kiwi shows on the finish. A little tart and sour, to which the passion fruit seems to contribute and the Galaxy hops seem to mellow. Smooth, lighter than the usual Almanac body, but still solid, well carbonated.
Fun, complex, great flavor and aroma, kind of tough to decipher all that's going on. Very enjoyable and well worth a purchase, the next time it comes around.

Note to self - do not buy retired Almanac Beers.
I love Almanac, however this one comes across as stale, thin and under-powered. It still has all the fruit flavours, and sourness but has a really dull mid palate hole.

Gold to copper in color with a fingernail of off white about the size of a quarter in the middle of my glass. The nose is green apple and pear. I'm tasting green apple, pear, oak, lime, mango, and chardonnay. The mouth is bone dry and moderately carbonated.

The nose is big and preposterously fruit filled. A tartness is evident in the smell as well, but otherwise it is all fruit. I was initially quite impressed, but the effect wears off. The flavour is very similar. A very unusual flavour profile, heavily fruit dominated. Lime sticks out for me, it actually tastes rather like lime aid. A bit sour. A somewhat thin flavour despite a huge fruit blast. Ultimately, it is enjoyable but comes across a bit thin and a tad gimmicky: how much fruit can we put in this beer?

375ml capped bottle served in a couple Georgetown samplers. Bottle code is 1304041616.
Pours a greenish fellow, hazy, lots of carbonation, small head. Smell is tart and juicy, lime, smells nice.
Taste is tart, again limey, sweet-tart, somewhat mild, but very nice.
Mouthfeel is very light and smooth. Overall, nice beer.

Pours a hazy golden straw color
Citrus sour smell, crisp apple, sweet mango
In addition to the nose, the first sip brings a strong yeasty character...not unpleasant. Less tropical tasting than the smell
Lightly carbonated and dry

Pours a beautiful sunflower yellow with a smooth haze and a fluffy finger of foam that leaves a ring around the edge.
Strong tropical fruit aromas of pineapple, kiwi, and mango explode, while in the back lingers vinous, leather, and oak notes.
Tart and fruity tropical flavors of kiwi, mango, and lime are accompanied by grape skin, oak, and a bretty funk.
Light-bodied, medium carbonation, tart, bitter and dry finish.
Overall, while the nose screams tropical fruit, the flavor fails to match. That being said, this is pleasantly drinkable.

375 ml bottle was poured into a tulip glass.
Appearance: A one finger head was poured that reduced to nothing quickly. I was expecting that. It is a slightly hazy golden yellow color with some clarity and vision of bubbles coming up through the glass.
Smell: Some sour and funky notes, citrus, lime, semisweet tropical fruits, mango, some vanilla, and oak earthiness.
Taste: Sour, tart, and slightly funky tropical delight. Nothing is too overbearing, but just right. Enough there to last throughout the whole palate.
Mouthfeel: Light, tart, crisp, refreshing, medium to high carbonation, a little chewy, and a little bitterness.
Overall: Have to admit that this first runaround with this brewery is a hit. After almost 8 months in a bottle, this beer tastes great. Looking forward to the next offering.

Pours golden in color with some yeast near the bottom. Aromas of tropical fruit and some hop aromas, oak, lime, must and white wine near the finish. Loads of tropical fruit flavor with near perfectly balanced sour lime bite and some Oaked white wine in the finish to dry it out. Nice balance all around

Bottle.
A: Lots of white wine and brett funk upfront, that seamlessly transition into hops of white grape, tropical fruit and light citrus, followed by lime, kiwi, very faint mango, and a moderate sourness.
A: Deep straw color, hazy with a modest white head that has decent retention. There is light lacing in the glass.
T: Lots of funky vinous character, pushing into the tropical fruit-flavored hops with lime and kiwi, and faint mango. There is a moderate lingering sourness that lasts through the finish.
M: Medium-light bodied with moderate carbonation. There is a very light, but pleasing acidity to the beer.
O: Great; this beer is heavy on the funky vinous character by using both white wine barrels and Nelson hops, but transitions well into the tropical fruit aspects of the beer. Well put together and a testament to City Beer's success!
