Style: American Wild Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.70%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Hazy collaboration with our friends at Stillwater Artisanal Ales, it’s also the latest entry in their “Strains from Mother Nature” series. We blended together a blonde Brettanomyces-fermented ale aged in both oak barrels and foedres, then added California-grown blueberries and blackberries. After maturing, we dry-hopped the beer with reckless amounts of Citra, Mosaic, El Dorado, Simcoe, Galaxy, Nugget, and Sterling hops for a trippy, tropical-dank aroma.

A golden beer with little to no head, pretty sour and extremely tart. Heavy notes of raspberry and blackberry, no getting a whole lot of blue berry unfortunately I think the blackberries over powered them despite the name.

A: The beer is hazy reddish purple in color. It poured with a collar of white bubbles around the edge of the glass and some wisps of lacing on the surface.
S: Light to moderate aromas of sour blueberries and blackberries are present in the nose along with some hints of citrus. As the beer warms up, the hop aromas become a little stronger and tropical fruits also become noticeable.
T: The taste generally follows the smell, starting off with sour flavors of blueberries and blackberries but notes of citrusy hops become noticeable in the finish, but are not present in the aftertaste.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and tart on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This is an interesting wild ale. I liked how it still predominantly smelled and tasted like a sour beer and the hops only lended subtle complexities and did not overpower the sour.

Poured from a 375ml bottle, dated 011917, a hazy reddish/pinkish orange under a 1/4" thick white head which fades quickly to the rim and leaves spots of lace. Aroma is berry fruit forward, tannins, funk, yeast and some must. Flavor is sour berries (more blackberry than blueberry), oak with mild tannins, skin/stems/seeds. Semi-moderate body and lite carbonation. Finishes fruity and sour. Easy drinking. Enjoyed.

12 oz. bottle brought back from the tasting room in San Francisco.

The body is a vaguely hazy, rust colored red with deep purple hues. Pink undertones when held up to the light. The color takes away from the opacity. Thin ring of bubbles on the very outer rim of the glass. No lacing.

Burst of tropical and citrus fruit in the nose. Underlying jammy blueberries and a sharp funk and tartness on the tail end.

Lots of tropical notes and a fair bit of blueberries. Lightly tart and a solid amount of oak. Funk on the back end that transitions in a grainy, wheaty finish

Light carbonation and medium body. Tart, dry finish.

This beer is weird, kind of a mess, but tasty. The hop profile reminds me of a NE IPA. Far less tart than other Almanac beers. Needs more to be more fruit forward and slightly more acidic, at least to my tastes.

375 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 1/19/2017. Pours slightly hazy reddish/pinkish orange color with a 1 finger dense light pink head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big tart/tangy blueberry, blackberry, fruit skin/seeds, lemon, lime, cherry, strawberry, grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pineapple, passionfruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, oak, hay, straw, floral, grass, pepper, wheat, cracker, light leathery/musty funk, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, berries, citrus/tropical hops, and moderate oak/pale malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tart/tangy blueberry, blackberry, fruit skin/seeds, lemon, lime, cherry, strawberry, grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pineapple, passionfruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, oak, hay, straw, floral, grass, pepper, wheat, cracker, light leathery/musty funk, and yeast/oak earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tartness, fruit tang, and yeast/oak spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart/tangy berries, fruit skin/seeds, lemon, lime, cherry, strawberry, grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pineapple, passionfruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, oak, hay, straw, floral, grass, pepper, wheat, cracker, light leathery/musty funk, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, berries, citrus/tropical hops, and moderate oak/pale malt flavors; with an awesome malt/tartness and tangy fruit balance; with zero puckering/astringent flavors after the finish. Moderate increasing dryness from tartness and tangy fruit. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth and moderately grainy/acidic/tangy/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is fantastic. Zero warming alcohol for 6.75%. Overall this is an outstanding fruited wild ale! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, berries, citrus/tropical hops, and moderate oak/pale malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the modestly lactic/tangy/tannic/drying finish. Pretty much perfectly balanced fruity/funky Brett, berries, and citrus/tropical hop complexity; with nice oak presence and malt backbone to balance acidity. A highly enjoyable offering.

375ml bottle into snifter. Bottle date 1/19/17.

A: Pours a deep berry juicy purple with a very short lived fizzy head that quickly disappeared into a faint collar. No lace.
S: Juicy and perfumey berry nose with fragrant notes of sweet blueberries mixed with notes of peach, earthy spice, jammy blackberry, and doughy yeast.
T: Juicy berry flavors up front mixed with notes of sweet tropical fruits and a touch of ripe melon. There's a bitter citrus rind/pith quality to the finish. Sweet sugary berry lingers in the aftertaste.
M: Medium body, bright acidic punch, medium tartness, drying finish, but some residual sweetness lingers. Bubbly, even, carbonation. Tartness/acidity is lemon-like at times.
O: Great perfumey fragrant nose, solid berry flavor, decent mouthfeel.
