375 ML bottle on 6/23/17 (July 2017 release). Poured into wine glass, pinkish red body, barely any head. Smells of cranberry, cherry, fairly strong red wine essence and slight sourness. Tastes like slightly sour cranberry juice, hints of cherry - really subdued sourness and really easy to drink! The feel is honestly pretty thin, not much wine oils, tannin flavor, nor viscosity. Overall this is easy to drink, enjoyable, not too sour, but not a very complex beer. I'd say it's one of the more reserved releases from Almanac's repertoire.

The beer pours out a dark pink/light red color, with a thin white head---------- the aromas are of sour cherries, sweet berries, blackberry pie and wine---------- the flavors start of sour with cherries, berries and funk, finishing dry with a thin to medium mouthfeel----------- overall this beer was delicious, I felt like all the flavors worked well together, very sour with a touch of funk and sweetness-

Almanac Beer Co. "Sangriaveza"
375 ml brown glass bottle without production codes or freshness dating
$12.99 @ The Beer Yard (The Beverage Store), Wayne, PA

Notes via stream of consciousness: Wow, this is a painted bottle. Fancy design too. There's a pressure sensitive label below as well, but that just covers whatever brew they want to put in it. Very smart! Nice look, and the beer looks good too - it's a clear (there's plenty of sediment in the bottom of the bottle) ruby-orange color beneath a short - wait, it's gone - head of white foam. That's not unusual though, sour beers often lose their head almost immediately. It's still got a collar though, so that's good, and there is some minor spotty and streaky lacing left behind. OK, on to the aroma... mineralish, chalky and almost vitamin tablet like, and "tart", clearly from lactobacillus. It's fruity but nondescript, although having been given the word "sangria" in the title I think I could go with that. What fruits are in here? blackberries, raspberries, cherries, and Merlot grapes. OK. If anything I get raspberries first, then grapes, and then blackberries. It's an OK aroma. It's not off-putting by any means, but neither is it really a draw. Or maybe it's just that I'm not used to a beer like it. Let's see how the flavor stands up... ah, pretty good. The lacto character remains, and the raspberry is there, maybe some grape as well, and a touch of sweetish malt. Blackberry comes out in the finish. Mildly bitter. Medium-light in body and gently effervescent and biting in combination with the acidity. Interesting. I'm also getting some of those Merlot grapes lingering as well, and there is a slight astringency to it, not bad though. For 7.8% abv the alcohol never shows but I didn't expect it to. It finishes dry, tart but with a touch of sweet malt, but then delicately oaky as well. Sangria-cervesa, eh? I think they've nailed it. It's bright and fresh and fruity and refreshing. I could go for this again. I'm guessing it's not their bet beer though, so I'll have to seek some of those out. For you, however, try it. I won't say seek it out, but it's worth the money in my opinion.

A: The beer is hazy pale red in color. It poured with a half finger high white head that died down, leaving a collar of medium-sized bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of Merlot wine and cherries are present in the nose.
T: The taste is sour and has tart flavors of blackberries, cherries and raspberries along with notes of Merlot grapes and faint hints of vanilla.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and very tart on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: The taste of this beer really has a nice balance of all of the different fruits, including the Merlot grapes. It's not overly sour.

375 ml bottle into a tulip glass. Had 9/8/17.

Pours a hazy, rosy pink, with a slight, brief head and some spotty lacing. Smells sour and tart, raspberries, grapes, some wine, oak, light funk, yeast, cherries as it warms. The taste is similar- wine, raspberries, grapes, light cherries, some malt. Not very sour, less tart than the nose. Smooth, a good medium body, could use more carbonation.

Great aroma, very good flavor, a bit flat for Almanac. I liked this a lot, but I thought it could have been better.

Appearance: amber-orange with considerable haze. The head is white and minimal that fades to a lacing. This makes no sense, but the color reminds me of a hybrid of orange peel and oak – the appearance not aroma: synesthesia?

Aroma: inviting. Sharp lacto sour backed by oak and fun, which smells of leather. No fruit in the nose.

Flavor: mellow initially – “softer” than expected. The fruit definitely adds to this beer, but is very restrained. It comes in late in the finish, long after you’ve swallowed. Spicy almost in its acidity, and the oak is a late comer. I cannot detect the grapes, yet their presence is there.

Mouthfeel: right-on for the style. Nothing spectacular, but the shoe fits.

Overall: a solid effort. A whale? No, but very enjoyable. Certainly better as it warms. I’d buy this again.
